We are finishing up this wednesday Nosework intro. class. .........for our final class they plan to set up a pretend trial.
One of the volunteers is actually one of the AKC judge so he will be forcing us to apply the rules we have learned so far to date.
It took me a few classes to figure this out but Hoss had 2 ways of ID'ing the hide.........sometimes he would look back at me......other times he would place paw on the box. So it appears as the human I needed to pick one method as our tell......and to hold of on treating until he gave the appropriate tell......
I opted for Hoss placing his paw on box.
So this week I would hold out on giving the treat until he placed his paw on the box..........yep.......he's doing that...........
In mid november there will be an AKC trial at our training center...........I will go into an A category..........was told it's geared for beginners.......10 closed boxed with 2 finds..........so I got Hoss AKC registered and plan to enter a beginners level ...its only $25 per day...........the first night of trials are Friday....that will be fun..... that's when they deal with all the professional dogs.....police, etc.......might just go and watch that one.
Found the perfect treat ............Hoss gets whale eyes and will work like crazy for Turkey Pepperoni............when rewarding I give him little pieces.......he loves his pepperoni pieces.

I would have loved to, but have to save some pennies! Minnesota is about 4.5 hours away so it involves a hotel stay, plus gas and the normal trial fees. I do need some of those elements, but will save them for next summer. We're focusing on that last NW3 right now! Crossing fingers, toes and paws!

Hoss had final intro class last night.
10 boxes (2 rows of five) with 1 scent birch.
Winner completed find in 6 seconds (was in first box) ...
Hoss came in second at 12 seconds.
So much fun to watch all of the dogs and how they have progressed......or shall I say how us humans have progressed!!!
Dogs seem to know what to do if the humans do their job correctly........

Addie has had a busy couple months with nosework. She had her first NW3 attempt, no title as we had false alerts in vehicles and interiors, but got otherwise a good first attempt. She also played in AKC scent work, getting legs in novice exteriors, buried, and interiors. Then she earned her USCSS Intermediate title and finished her UKC Novice Nosework title. We are blessed with having a lot of nosework organizations and clubs in our area. Addie is really coming into her stride in nosework, I couldn't be happier with her.

Was at nosework class last night and a question was presented .......the instructor said there was a discussion regarding many Nosework dogs .....as they are approaching the start line the dog “shakes” just like after bath time.....big shake.......they were trying to determine why they do this.......any of you ever had a discussion regarding this behavior?

Yes, we've talked about the shake before! I think it depends on the dog, but it's often a stress release. Not a bad stress necessarily, but almost like an athlete coming up to the starting line and taking a deep breath. A way for them to clear the air and get ready for the job at hand.
