We are finishing up this wednesday Nosework intro. class. .........for our final class they plan to set up a pretend trial.
One of the volunteers is actually one of the AKC judge so he will be forcing us to apply the rules we have learned so far to date.
It took me a few classes to figure this out but Hoss had 2 ways of ID'ing the hide.........sometimes he would look back at me......other times he would place paw on the box. So it appears as the human I needed to pick one method as our tell......and to hold of on treating until he gave the appropriate tell......
I opted for Hoss placing his paw on box.
So this week I would hold out on giving the treat until he placed his paw on the box..........yep.......he's doing that...........
In mid november there will be an AKC trial at our training center...........I will go into an A category..........was told it's geared for beginners.......10 closed boxed with 2 finds..........so I got Hoss AKC registered and plan to enter a beginners level ...its only $25 per day...........the first night of trials are Friday....that will be fun..... that's when they deal with all the professional dogs.....police, etc.......might just go and watch that one.
Found the perfect treat ............Hoss gets whale eyes and will work like crazy for Turkey Pepperoni............when rewarding I give him little pieces.......he loves his pepperoni pieces.

I would have loved to, but have to save some pennies! Minnesota is about 4.5 hours away so it involves a hotel stay, plus gas and the normal trial fees. I do need some of those elements, but will save them for next summer. We're focusing on that last NW3 right now! Crossing fingers, toes and paws!

Hoss had final intro class last night.
10 boxes (2 rows of five) with 1 scent birch.
Winner completed find in 6 seconds (was in first box) ...
Hoss came in second at 12 seconds.
So much fun to watch all of the dogs and how they have progressed......or shall I say how us humans have progressed!!!
Dogs seem to know what to do if the humans do their job correctly........

Addie has had a busy couple months with nosework. She had her first NW3 attempt, no title as we had false alerts in vehicles and interiors, but got otherwise a good first attempt. She also played in AKC scent work, getting legs in novice exteriors, buried, and interiors. Then she earned her USCSS Intermediate title and finished her UKC Novice Nosework title. We are blessed with having a lot of nosework organizations and clubs in our area. Addie is really coming into her stride in nosework, I couldn't be happier with her.

Was at nosework class last night and a question was presented .......the instructor said there was a discussion regarding many Nosework dogs .....as they are approaching the start line the dog “shakes” just like after bath time.....big shake.......they were trying to determine why they do this.......any of you ever had a discussion regarding this behavior?

Yes, we've talked about the shake before! I think it depends on the dog, but it's often a stress release. Not a bad stress necessarily, but almost like an athlete coming up to the starting line and taking a deep breath. A way for them to clear the air and get ready for the job at hand.

Dog Training Center St Petersburg

AKC trials......check out this site......this is the training center we attend.

Go to the site .... dtcsp.org

Under events are all the details for this weekend......judges etc.

Friday should be special because all the professional dogs are doing trials.....police, fire rescue, etc. might leave Hoss at home to go watch that for fun.

Hopefully we will leave with one green ribbon ...Hoss is so funny ..he gets so excited....

Nope. Treats in the pouch. Mine know they need to work to earn their rewards.

Suspect He will figure out he is wasting time by looking at my pockets......in time.

Have fun at your first trial, you will do great! Get a pouch for treats! They are like $5 on chewy or amazon. If you only reward him at the odor source he will become less distracted and will not be looking up at you for the treat, he will quickly realize he only gets rewarded when he stays on source.

I get these frozen breakfast sausages for like $1 for a pack at aldis and cut them up into little disks. They are great for training treats or at the trial! I also do cubes of cheese or cut up string cheese.

I have a treat pouch...Hoss is so tall.......his nose is level with the ppouch and he pokes it with his nose constantly.

I have worn a pouch on my front ...and back ........poke poke poke .......even around my neck.

His nose is right there !!! poke poke poke ......ignoring the boxes..........so I wait........he gets nothing.........till he deals with the boxes.

He eventually goes to the boxes......he is such a player. LOL

We are beginners so I will just hold my ground with him! Ignore and wait for him to play the game correctly.

I have found that asking "show me!" is a great way to get by this. Try not to reward when he gets frustrated and chews or jumps on the boxes... What is Hoss's alert?

Sometimes we play the "it's yer choice" game with odor....one hand has a hand full of treats, one hand has the odor tin. The dog has to make the choice to keep their nose on odor in order to get the reward. It's not only a good way to build up odor obedience and staying power at odor, but it also can help work away from distractions (treats). It might be a good game for Hoss. You can then play with it on the fridge or something, just a little bit more distance. It's a nice, easy game.

Initially I was having him place paw on the box till he got to rough dobe smacking them.......

He still smacks them (trying to undo that) but now I am making him sit at source.
