lestat1978, will have to make sure I take DH along when we start to take pictures and video! He was my camera man when we did Rally and Obedience. Although his camera/video skills are a little "challenged". He somehow didn't have the camera rolling when we got our CDX title leg. He felt so bad and even though I was not happy, I did feel bad for him!

I hate not being behind the camera. I'm always thinking they should have zoomed in. They should have made sure not to get X, Y, Z in the background. Etc. I try to just be thankful I have someone to take pics of Ivan and I.

I had a bit of a revelation in class yesterday. I'm so used to Brandy being a bit skittish that I didn't think she would do well with most of the hides that were set up. Not only did she do them, but she nailed them! She has gained such confidence, that I have to start giving her the benefit of the doubt as a handler. I would hate to be the one holding her back!
In one case she had to go in an area to get at the scent that was enclosed with an ex pen. The tin was hidden by some boxes that were circling it on the inside. I was thinking to myself, there's no way she's going to want to get in that tight space (there was a fake wall on one side too). Not only did she go in, but she snouted those boxes out of the way and got right to source! I was so proud!
It's been awesome watching her grow! Even our instructor mentioned to the class that she has come a long way since her first few classes! (She sat and trembled in her kennel, peed on the floor, didn't want nothing to do with the boxes. I honestly thought I may have made a mistake starting nose work!).
I'm so happy for Brandy! It's been a great journey and I can't wait to see where it brings us next!

Level 1 Complete

Ivan finished up Level 1 this week. Starting Level 2 on Monday. He has such fun doing this. I might not have so much fun during the car ride there with his inccessent whining, but. . .

We had our first Nose Work class today and had a great time. Baron is the "elder statesman" at the class as the other 4 dogs are puppies or under 3 years. He did pretty good. First time in he was a little apprehensive with the boxes but second time in he started getting the hang of it. Love the trainer. She is so upbeat and positive about everything. So far a good experience.

Pula had her 3rd attempt at the NW2 level (after waiting a year to get into a trial again). We missed 1 hide on the exterior. We had the unfortunate timing that a storm was blowing through (no rain, but very windy) and we have not really had experience searching in those environments. She just could not source the second hide in the outdoor area (she did get the first one). She placed 1st in interiors and 3rd in vehicles that day. We have another one this weekend, so hoping this is our time, but regardless, we will have a good time. Temperatures will be warm (about 80).

No NW2 title for Pula. I (not her) screwed up on the small interior room with 2 hides. I got a little antsy and called early (without a good alert) and pointed to the wrong step on the ladder behind some boxes. The rest of the trial seemed easy (this was easy also, but I was thinking too much - always a problem). Was a fun day. Not sure when I will get a chance to try again. Trial had 34 participants, 74 on the wait list. Could get lucky and get in again this year, could be a lot longer (last wait was 13 months).
She was 1st place in containers, and she did wonderful searches in the wind for vehicles and exterior. Her first room of interiors was flawless. IT was my fault.

Congratulations on the containers placement and success on the other elements. Yikes! 74 on the wait list! That's tough.

I'm on the wait list for Gio for NW1 but far down the list so I know we won't get called. Going to enter both dogs for the next trial (NW1 and NW3) so hoping I win the draw for one of them.

Level 2 Complete

Ivan finished up level 2 last night. I'm told we'll have to work on leash during trials, so we're working that out. He's fast so I inadvertently am giving leash corrections - thankfully he knows the game so well he keeps on chugging. A long line requires more management. Grrr!! I'd rather work him off lead.

Just found out there might finally be a Nosework trial in MN late this summer...now I have to figure out how the heck to add another class into my schedule to get Richter back into Nosework so we don't miss the trial.

Chase and I went to an Advanced Nose Work workshop that offered DOTS (ORTs) at the end.

Chase passed his Pine today, that's 2/3. Last one to get is Thyme.

Yes, that is the SDDA equivalent of a NACSW NW1 (or a UN1, if you do United Nosework).

Sigh... I'm not sure how far we put back our training. I was working with Leo, differentiating between a box with scent, and an empty decoy box, and she got ahold of a bug that was on the ground in between them (hadn't noticed it was a bug, thought it was a bit of wood or some such). She spat it out, ran off, and absolutely refused to come back to the boxes. She had been doing pretty well up until then, but after that, she shut down.

She spat it out, ran off, and absolutely refused to come back to the boxes. She had been doing pretty well up until then, but after that, she shut down.
Have you tried working with scent in a pill bottle? There are many more games you can play to build on Scent Work without a box.

I'm planning on taking her back out this evening, and playing "which hand?" with her. If she will do that, I'm going to try a single box in my hand, and if she'll do that, we'll try it on the ground. She's such a mix of hardheaded and super sensitive....

The Tupperware containers. Or in my case, the Kroger brand lunch meat containers, similar to Gladware. When I was reading the lectures, she kept calling it a "box".

I took her back out before dinner, and she was fine with the scent tin in my hand, so we went on to the scent tin in the box. After a couple repitions of that, I went ahead an put both boxes on the ground (in a different spot from the bug) and she was a bit hesitant, but was willing to work. We did a couple of repitions of that, and called it a day.

Supplies

Ivan has one more level 3 class on Monday. I think from here on out I'm just going to train on my own.

Should I be at all concerned if I don't get my supplies, like oil, from a K9 scent work store? i.e. Buy the oil from Amazon, buy Qtips at WalMart, etc. If I look at the NACSW website they list the specific oil they're using.

Is there anything else I'm overlooking by going it solo that I should be concerned with?

From what I understand, the oils don't necessarily smell the same. Some other manufacturers dilute or add ingredients. We were just talking about it at class last night. So you might want to wait and ask your instructor about ordering the scent itself. At least with my instructor, she ordered enough that we were able to get practice scent from her to work with at home.

They have handed out some Q-tips for practice at home, but I'll definitely need to order my own supplies if I want to practice at home over the summer.

The birch I'm looking at online says no added anything. Even if it was diluted, I'm not sure I'd be concerned with that. Cadaver dogs still find cadaver in water.

I just bought the UKC Nose Work Kit from Leerburg. It has scented Q-tips, one dram vials of all the oils, and a ventilated tin to put the Q-tips in. I figure if I need refills (or to order the C-WAGS or SDDA oils), they are easy enough to order online, and the Q-tips can be purchased just about anywhere.

The one manufacturer I was looking at on Amazon specifically stated there's no added stuff, but they don't make the type of Anise I'll need. The other manufacturer I looked at didn't specify no added stuff.

One thing just occurred to me is that we haven't covered distraction odors. I would hate to fumble that up.
