I can only hope lol. All joking aside though, he is the best dog I could have asked for.

And it is probably super obvious to everyone else, but I have never had an intact male nor have I competed in any dog sports. She told me to find a new harness entirely unlike anything else he has for hiking or whatnot and to never--like never never--let him do anything else in his work gear. Not exit the area, not play with me after a search, not wait for another search at practice, not greet anyone at practice or competitions. Nothing. And ESPECIALLY not potty. Work gear is strictly for working, and when it comes off we play and goof around and get to mark shrubbery. She said that it is important to take the gear off quickly though, not wait for feedback or anything at practice or walk back to waiting area at competitions, because getting to be informal again and sniff whatever they want to is part of the reward. So I put it on immediately before a search, usually at our final waiting spot, and take it off the moment we exit the search area (yes, they have to wait the 20 seconds for me to get the harness off before we exit the larger area). He will actively search and ignore my other dogs if they try to play with him now when we practice. He went from bolting to the shrubs, trying to leave vehicle areas, requiring constant redirecting and being generally unfocused in exteriors and vehicles to taking first in exteriors and third in vehicles in our NW2. I can let him free search landscapes without being concerned that he will mark (even though he will still occasionally do the sniff, but more so on hard surface floors than outside now), and allowing him to work away from me I think helps both of us. It feels weirdly structured, but once I got my trainer on board it worked well for us.

Newtie earned his Novice Exterior and Novice Interior titles at the AKC trial yesterday! He got 4th place on his first exterior search, 2nd place on his second exterior search and first place on his interior search! (We had legs from other trials to earn the titles).
I only do AKC trials when I can't get into NACSW and they're not too far away. I find them to be a bit chaotic since I'm used the well run and thought out trials of NACSW. I figure they're good for practice if nothing else and if we come home with a pretty ribbon that's not a bad day.

At the trial a breeder brought a few of her puppies for socialization so Newtie and I got to meet them. Talk about puppy fever! Not quite ready yet though, but Newton didn't do bad with her so I'm hopeful it will go well when it's time. Maybe next year!

Lily says that pit bulls melt in the rain, and as such can't go potty if it's so much as sprinkling. But letting her sister do nosework, but not her? Oh, hey-ell no! I stopped on the porch to give her the opportunity to go back inside, and she darn ear dragged me down the steps.

We had a very fun and hot day on Sunday in Geneva, IL! Newtie and I earned our L2C title. I was very proud of how well he worked and kept his focus!

I was #46 on the wait list for the Davenport, IA NW3 (which is tomorrow) and I got the call this morning...A spot had opened! Crazy! I had to decline it though, because it's going to be 99 degrees! I just can't see dragging poor Newtie down there last minute and then trying to keep both of us cool. Never thought I'd turn an opportunity at a 3 down, but some things are more important. Considering the wait list has moved all the way down to 62, I'm not the only one thinking that. Hope everyone competing is safe and has a good day with their dogs!

You made the right call...the heat index is supposed to be like, 110 degrees with the humidity. I can't believe anyone is going to trial in that. I just don't think it's at all safe, and I sure wouldn't!
