I can only hope lol. All joking aside though, he is the best dog I could have asked for.

And it is probably super obvious to everyone else, but I have never had an intact male nor have I competed in any dog sports. She told me to find a new harness entirely unlike anything else he has for hiking or whatnot and to never--like never never--let him do anything else in his work gear. Not exit the area, not play with me after a search, not wait for another search at practice, not greet anyone at practice or competitions. Nothing. And ESPECIALLY not potty. Work gear is strictly for working, and when it comes off we play and goof around and get to mark shrubbery. She said that it is important to take the gear off quickly though, not wait for feedback or anything at practice or walk back to waiting area at competitions, because getting to be informal again and sniff whatever they want to is part of the reward. So I put it on immediately before a search, usually at our final waiting spot, and take it off the moment we exit the search area (yes, they have to wait the 20 seconds for me to get the harness off before we exit the larger area). He will actively search and ignore my other dogs if they try to play with him now when we practice. He went from bolting to the shrubs, trying to leave vehicle areas, requiring constant redirecting and being generally unfocused in exteriors and vehicles to taking first in exteriors and third in vehicles in our NW2. I can let him free search landscapes without being concerned that he will mark (even though he will still occasionally do the sniff, but more so on hard surface floors than outside now), and allowing him to work away from me I think helps both of us. It feels weirdly structured, but once I got my trainer on board it worked well for us.

Newtie earned his Novice Exterior and Novice Interior titles at the AKC trial yesterday! He got 4th place on his first exterior search, 2nd place on his second exterior search and first place on his interior search! (We had legs from other trials to earn the titles).
I only do AKC trials when I can't get into NACSW and they're not too far away. I find them to be a bit chaotic since I'm used the well run and thought out trials of NACSW. I figure they're good for practice if nothing else and if we come home with a pretty ribbon that's not a bad day.

At the trial a breeder brought a few of her puppies for socialization so Newtie and I got to meet them. Talk about puppy fever! Not quite ready yet though, but Newton didn't do bad with her so I'm hopeful it will go well when it's time. Maybe next year!

Lily says that pit bulls melt in the rain, and as such can't go potty if it's so much as sprinkling. But letting her sister do nosework, but not her? Oh, hey-ell no! I stopped on the porch to give her the opportunity to go back inside, and she darn ear dragged me down the steps.

We had a very fun and hot day on Sunday in Geneva, IL! Newtie and I earned our L2C title. I was very proud of how well he worked and kept his focus!

I was #46 on the wait list for the Davenport, IA NW3 (which is tomorrow) and I got the call this morning...A spot had opened! Crazy! I had to decline it though, because it's going to be 99 degrees! I just can't see dragging poor Newtie down there last minute and then trying to keep both of us cool. Never thought I'd turn an opportunity at a 3 down, but some things are more important. Considering the wait list has moved all the way down to 62, I'm not the only one thinking that. Hope everyone competing is safe and has a good day with their dogs!

You made the right call...the heat index is supposed to be like, 110 degrees with the humidity. I can't believe anyone is going to trial in that. I just don't think it's at all safe, and I sure wouldn't!

They did let people crate inside, but the only air they had was from window units. From what I heard it was still hot and sticky and miserable. Surprisingly there were 11 titles even with all that, so not a bad day if you stuck it out!

I still can't believe anyone trialed in that. Plus, there was no notice there would be indoor crating ahead of time, either. Yikes. I still think you made the right call!

Now this is just me thinking out loud here , but if you were down the list at 46 , then to me there were 46 others that made the right decision, am I thinking right here ?

I’m with Meadow , think you made a good judgement call 79

I still think you made the right call!
I think we did too!

I've heard of a couple people that brought their senior dogs (who aren't in the best of health) to Davenport this weekend and I have to say, it just really ticks me off. They had to have been miserable! No ribbon is worth my dog's health and happiness.

I agree with you. Honestly, I was sort of mad at anyone who trialed, TBH. When there are warnings out that people should be staying indoors in air conditioning, when it's the type of warnings that were out there - that type of heat is SO deadly. And our dogs can't tell us how they feel, and they can get heat related illness SO fast. Plus, you think about....how quickly could you get to an emergency vet when you're unfamiliar with the area? Is it REALLY worth the risk for a sport? I just don't think so...you and I are on the same page. Maybe some people are way more acclimated to that kind of weather, but...I find it tough to believe. I really wish dog sports had more ways to cancel, because I do really understand the pressure people feel, especially in a sport where trials are really expensive and hard to get into, but it's soooooo not worth that risk. And of course everyone who titled will now feel that it WAS worth it...

Excellent points about the heat, MC! Such high potential for tragedy. What ribbon or title would be worth a sick dog? Or worse? Glad everyone made it safely through the day.

Newtie and I had an excellent day at the AKC trial in Amherst, WI on Saturday. We had 6 different "trials" and placed first in 5 of them! We competed in Novice Buried, Advanced Containers and Advanced Exteriors. I was worried about buried because we've only practiced it a hand full of times, but he nailed it! Got the two searches in 8:31 and 7:09 seconds, respectively! We missed first place in one of the advanced exterior searches, but still Q'd so no big deal. We are one trial away from three different titles, four if you count SWN (scent work novice is the title you receive for completing novice buried, container, interior and exterior titles).
I've been using AKC as a trial practice basically and I think it's working well! I'm super excited to try our hand (paw) at another NW3 because it really feels like we're working well as a team right now.

Newtie with his two first place buried ribbons.

The results were taking forever so I didn't stick around for our ribbons. A friend grabbed containers and exteriors and sent this to me. She said there's a lot of blue here!

Congratulations!

And yes, I count SWN, because it supersedes SCN, SIN, SEN and SBN.
