The Nose Work Journal

I'm stealing brw1982 idea of a journal. I've noticed an increase of enthusiastic sniffers on this forum, so I think a journal where we can share our progress, accomplishments, and training techniques would be fun and very helpful.

Please feel free post as many times as you want, ask any question regarding the sport of Nose Work (which can include tracking, NACSW, and the Canadian version SDDA).

So, how is everyone doing today?

I'm shooting for entering Lily in a South Texas Nosework Dogs UKC trial for PTs (ORTs) in May. It's only a couple of hours away (Houston), and PTs are usually only $15. If she passes her birch (Novice) PT, I can do a day of entry into the element trial. At least, that's how they normally do it.

Has anyone tried a buried hide yet? I got some dirt (topsoil with composted manure, not the greatest choice, but literally the only thing I could find at Lowe's without regular fertilizer in it) and some plastic boxes (not to regulation, but who cares, at the moment) and gave it a whirl the other day. The general consensus was "find what?", but all three of them caught on pretty quick. Well... I had to help Leo by going down to two boxes from four, but she's fluffy.

Not in the sense of the new AKC buried hides, no. But Richter has found buried hides in tins before on Nosework field trips - tins just straight buried in the ground, not super deep, but definitely down several inches. Just part of our training. He's also done water hides - hides in a couple of inches of water. Very interesting to work those!

Evidently underwater hides are an element in one of the European organizations. Finland, maybe? I know an FDSA student mentioned her dog getting an underwater title.

Oh, if anyone is interested in learning more about the new AKC program, and/or interested in teaching Handler Discrimination, the Fenzi Dog Sports Academy has two classes that you'll want to check out this session. For the overall AKC class, you'll want NW600 Introduction to AKC Scentwork https://fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/courses/11692 and for the Handler Discrimination class, you'll want to check out NW620 Introduction to Handler Discrimination Scentwork https://fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/courses/11684 Or, you could be like me, and take both of them....

We picked up another level 3 Q today. Only need one more for a title. We DQ'd the first run, Indy alerted on every article, ugh. We also got a cute little rubber turtle for the slowest time, lol. C-Wags allows 4 minutes for three scents and we were 2 minutes and 30 some seconds.

Has anyone else done this? Team Dax is already entered and has been accepted in a NW2 trail this May in Ft. Pierce Fl . Today I registered for another NW2 trail for June in Liburn GA. I don't know if we will get in. Hopefully we will not need to compete in the Liburn trail. I just wanted to have a backup plan knowing how difficult it is to get into trails. I hope I am not putting negatively out in the universe and jinxed us.

Dax earned her NW2 title. The trail was held on Sunday May 14th in Ft. Pierce. Thank goodness we were crated in an AC building. I heard my first 30 second warning during the vehicle search and it was totally handler error. There was one hide with 3 vehicles. Dax immediately went to the first vehicle and bracking trying to get under the wheel hub however the thought of one hide completely went out of my mind and all I was thinking about was there were two more vehicle to search. Suddenly on the third vehicle I heard 30 seconds. I run so fast back to the first vehicle whipped Dax around to where she was first bracking the wheel hub and called Alert, Finish. We made it in time. Last search of the day. Earned our NW2 title. I have learned an important lesson one that I will never forget. TRUST you dog. :2surprise:

WAY TO GO!!! Always trust your dog and watch that behavior change! :D

Richter earned his level 1 containers yesterday. We had a fun trial. LOVE Nosework - such a fun sport!

We totally all do that! Especially in a stressful trial! Way to go on the title!

Congrats to Dax and and Richter!!!!

We had our first NW3 attempt and it was so much fun! I can't wait to try it again even though I messed up our container search pretty badly. If you want to take a peek I have the videos out on my youtube channel: my2dobes.
For the vehicle search, she had diarrhea right before and I could tell she was distracted so I called finish early. It was a good thing I did too, because we barely got out of the search area and she exploded...poor girl! We ended up leaving one hide out there, but at least we weren't dq'd!
I'm proud to say that we nailed interiors getting all three rooms correct, including a tricky search area that really had multiple little rooms included in that one search. The CO told us it was his way of getting a blank room in!
Containers...I was so excited about that search that I jumped the gun and messed it up for us both. Lesson learned.
Exteriors was a larger search area and I'm really happy with how we covered everything. I should have called finish a little earlier, but I was afraid of leaving something out there. There was only the one hide.
Great day and I'm so proud of my girl!!!

Very pleased to report Sypha passed all three ORTs on her first try this weekend! We had extremely cold weather (42 degrees!) with heavy rain, so it wasn't a pleasant day :) I'm just thrilled with her...she was fabulous, especially since she's hardly had any classwork; she's mostly home taught by me. She rocked her searches, and had the judge and helpers laughing with her enthusiasm. This girl loves scentwork! On to bigger things!

:crisps:

Note to self: Ilka + nosework + homemade tuna treats = dog so highly aroused that she can't think.

She was so intent on getting the treats that she was throwing out behaviors and not searching at all, although once she jumped on to the kitchen trash can with all four feet, she did finally find one hide since it was practically under her nose and almost unavoidable at that point. However, by then, she was so hyped up that I put her up without ever finding the second one.

She's highly food motivated, and can get frantic for plain kibble, but this put her completely over the top.

So, I think the lesson here is "tuna treats are okay to use with Leo, but use something a bit less for Lily , and maybe try stale saltine crackers for Ilka...".

Indy earned his Level 3 nose work title with C-Wags today. So proud of him! We did one level 4 run but DQ'd. All my fault, I had 5 mins for four scents and I think I rushed and called alert when I shouldn't have. Trust your dog. Good experience though!

Way to go, Indy!

I'm super proud to say Richter earned his NW2 today! He also got 1st place in vehicles and 3rd in containers, and 3 of his 4 elements were "pronounced" searches. So proud of this dog!
