We earned our RN

We earned our RN this weekend! Very proud of both of us. This is the first dog I've ever really trained (other then basic social skills). I've learned so much and look forward to our fun progress together. It was unbearably hot and humid, yuck, but we stuck it out

Our first leg ever in June we got third place!

our successful weekend qualifying even got a second and third place in there

Congratulations! What a beautiful picture with ribbon!

My question is, what is the difference between AKC Rally, Agility or Jumper?

I am curious what does it take in a dog to be more successful in Rally versus Agility?

AND-- does it take more or less athleticism/running on the part of the Handler?

Thanks, in advance, and Congratulations, again.

Rally grew out of training exercises frequently called "doodling" that people use to sharpen a dog's performance. Agility was modeled after equine show jumping. Both types of competition take a dog that can focus on what the handler is telling it to do. Agility adds the extra requirements of distance work and speed.

"Jumpers" is actually an a shorthand for an AKC agility class/title "Jumpers with Weaves".

Rosemary explained it wonderfully (as always!) and gave great links too.
My personal opinion on it, well I'm new to it all. And Rally seems to me to be the step before trial obedience. It's obedience and you have to work with your dog as a team but its not as strict or precise. Obedience trials terrified me. Rally is a course of obedience but set up in a way that really feels like a game with your dog. Of course now I'm hooked on rally and obedience doesn't seem as scary so I've signed us up for our first beginner novice A obedience trial!
Rally you walk with your dog but there's not a lot of running like in agility. Of course I feel rally and obedience would help with your agility training. Same for jumpers. If you are looking for a fun way to train with your dog I highly recommend Rally.

I have heard Rally mentioned as the link between the CGC and regular obedience. Rally is more relaxed, for want of a better word, than obedience. There are no nit-picky 1/2 point deductions for a crooked sit for example, and you can talk to you dog, give multiple commands, even clap and pat your legs in Novice and Advanced. You can also do one retry at every station except the jumps in Advanced and Excellent, and the Stay in Excellent.

Beginner Novice is fun. You use rally signs for the heel on lead portion, and the recall is the only exercise where the dog is actually off-lead. One thing you really need to practice, though, is the sit stay. Some dogs seem to forget they have a neck, and will get up to watch you as you go around the ring, which is of course, an NQ. Get her used to you going around her in both directions. I've found that using a tennis court is great for simulating the BN (and now Pre-Novice) stay.

Have you started teaching the jumps yet? If you don't have a practice set, I recommend these J and J Dog Supplies: PRACTIJUMPS Lightweight Vinyl Obedience Jumps I have a 4' set, and love them.

Have you started teaching the jumps yet? If you don't have a practice set, I recommend these J and J Dog Supplies: PRACTIJUMPS Lightweight Vinyl Obedience Jumps I have a 4' set, and love them.
Having Rally as a bridge between CGC and Obedience is a great way to put that! and exactly what we are doing.

Practice is definitely what we are doing, I have no reason to quickly put titles on her, so even though we earned our RN last week the next trial we signed up for I kept us in Novice A (since we have 60 days to stay in that class) I figure why rush both of us?

We have been practicing her sit/stays, she does very well and doesn't break when I'm walking, but gets bored if i'm just standing for a sit stay. Every wednesday night we attend trial training classes. We have been working on her long downs and sits, though I know we don't need them yet, it's never to early to start. We have also been working on our jumps and recalls over the jumps, we are only about 6-8 ft out right now on the bar. The broad jump is iffy as she gets lazy sometimes and walks over it. And although I know we won't need it for some time we have slowly been working on retrieve, holding is still a no go, but retrieving has been a work all on it's own and I'm happy with the progress we are making.

Want to know the our worst area so far? Stand for examine. Sit for examine isn't quite so bad, because they just touch her head. But she does NOT want to be touched. She doesn't get aggressive or bite or anything. But she licks (nervous) and bends into a U to continue to lick the "judges" hand while they touch her shoulders and behind. Suggestions?

Of course now teaching myself to turn off the "encouragement" from the rally ring and be silent in the Obedience ring is going to be tough!

Stand for exam help:

You do this first and then add a stranger "judge" when dog understands the exam, reward program
Tell her stay and throw a piece of food about 10' in front of dog
You step away and then return to do a quick exam yourself
Release the dog to get the food- or- you pick up the food and hand feed the dog

I have my dog accept the exam, I walk away to where I would normally stand in front of dog, then return (as I would in the ring). I mix up picking up the food myself and giving to dog, with releasing the dog to get the food
With the strange person, start with a quick exam....start with just wither touch, or midback, then work up to wither, back, hip area

* You can incorporate into dinner times by having the dog stand, put bowl in front of dog, do an exam and release dog to eat 2x day. Repetition associated with good vibes is the key!
