Ear Cropping In northern Washington

Hey Guys, kinda new to all this.... Im planning for my puppy coming in 3 weeks. I have called 4 vets about ear cropping and they all said no. Im having alot of trouble finding some one who will do it and do it right. I even asked my breeder, but she keeps all her dogs o'natural and she couldn't recommend any to me. Understandable. can anyone give me some advice or knows of vets in this area that does ear cropping?

I think most of the show breeders in that area use Dr. Rick Douglas in BC.

Ear Vets

Dr Douglas cropped one of my pups I sent up to Canada. I was very impressed with the quality of his work. I understand he is also very reasonably priced.
I would recommend him based on what I have seen. He is in Newton, BC I believe.

Jessica Wilcock is a vet in Kirkland, WA who breeds Dobermans (Talent Dobermans). She is also a member of DT, user name talentdobe. You can PM her or call her at the Evergreen Veterinary Hospital, 425-821-9040.

She may be able to recommend someone who can crop your dog.

I am pretty certain she uses Dr. Douglas as the Newton Animal Hospital which is a little south of Vancover, BC, Canada.

Smile Ear Cropping

I found 2 vets that do ear cropping in this area. One is located in Tacoma. VCA Parkway Animal Hospital (Dr. Laura Lind) The other is located in Burien. VCA Five Corners Vet (Dr Cuthbert.) Both vets have quite a bit of experience doing dobe ear crops (or so I've heard). I would do your own research.

I ended up going with Dr. Cuthbert, my pup just got his ears cropped 2 days ago.

I hope this information is helpful to you. I had a hard time finding anywhere that even did ear cropping. And believe me a few people gave me a piece of their mind about how its cruel to do it. Just be sure its what you want. There is a lot of after care from what I understand.

Good Luck!

My pups ear cropping was just under $500, which includes the aftercare visits (re-taping and such)

While these aren't my favorite ears... I came across them in a weird set of web results for a different search.

I'd def let them know you don't want them super short, and ask to clean up the targus... the first black dog in the slide show is the best one of their crops in the pictures....

Ear Crop Surgeries for Schnauzers, Miniature Pinschers, Boxers, Pit Bulls, Great Danes,Dobermans and Mastiffs - Summitview Cowiche Veterinary Clinic - Serving Central Washington State from Yakima

Or to be safe and save an ugly crop, if dr. douglas doesn't get back to you within the week, just go natural, better down and untouched than ugly..

P.s.

did some googling...looks like J cubed danes uses dr. lind... not bad crops though they are on danes, and each breed is different, I would probably go there over summtview.

For your area, Dr. Douglas is definitely the go-to vet for ear cropping. If I were you, I would either go with him or go natural.

Also, I think that his cut off is 12 weeks for ear crop, but keep trying to get ahold of him and find out for sure.

British Columbia is one of the Canadian Provences which no longer allows cropping--and that's been true for several years now.

I don't know what you mean about not being a welcome visitor to our northern neighbors.

The only vet I know of in the northern area of Washington State now would be Dr Peterson--I don't have a phone number for her but she's up around Granite Falls and you could contact Kim Owen,Ravensown/KO Dobermans. 425 330-4100. Kim is a vet tech and doberman breeder and works with Dr Peterson I believe.

There are some vet cropping in Washington State who have been cropping ear on several breeds for many years. But I would not have them crop any Doberman of mine.

Good luck finding a really competent cropper.

dobebug

PS And good luck finding anyone in Canada who can legally crop any more. I just heard that Alberta recently initiated legislation so that cropping is no longer legal there. Most of the Canadian breeders I know are taking their litters somewhere in the states to be cropped.

I don't know of any vet in Oregon who I would have crop one of my dogs. And I've seen a couple of examples of allegedly experienced croppers in Oregon who had puppies and needed help learning to post ears.

From the look of the examples I have seen the the crop they were experienced in cropping were some variety of pit bull or something along those lines. Crops were very short--not at all even older Doberman style.

That post that said she found a vet in Oregon she'd used and was happy with was made in 2011. I have no idea who that would have been--even in 2011 there was no one in Oregon that I'd have let crop one of my Dobermans. But then I've been in Dobes since 1959 and show my dogs and have always looked for croppers who really do know how to do show crops, tailored to the dog and do dogs for show breeders who I can contact to see pictures of ears they've done.

Dr Douglass did ears on one of my dogs from a breeder in Washington State and many of the show breeders in Wahington State and Oregon used him for many years until because of the changing CKC and vetgrinary regs meant no cropping in BC as well as most of the provences now.

And I know who the really good croppers are around the country even though I don't know them in person I see their crops on living breathing show quality dogs out here on the west coast and occasionally I even make it to a National.
