I met a Fila today....

...the only ones I've ever seen were in pictures on the internet.

I went to the feed store to get grain, and this guy in a SUV was in front of me. I could see two huge dogs in there, and I thought "wow, are those Fila's?" When the old guy got out of his car, I asked...and he said "YES!! Nobody every knows what kind of dogs these are, you're the first one."...so we chit-chatted in the parking lot, talking about Fila's...and he tells me "oh yes, they are very protective....until they know you're welcome.....do you want to meet my female?"....I said sure...Well....he walks back to his car, slips a lead on her....and the next thing I see is.... this HUGE HUGE dog racing at me, with the old guy skidding across the snow, going for ride, he was SKIING on his boots.....LOL.

I have to say tho, I gulped, cuz it was obvious that the old dude wasn't in control, and if this girl was going to eat me, he'd be at a loss to stop it. She leaped up...and she's at least 5 inches taller than me....legs dangling on my shoulders (gawd she was heavy)....and started licking my face....I'm not scared of dogs....and gawd knows I have a pretty big dog of my own. But Fila's are supposed to be VERY aggressive, and all that I've read about them was racing thru my mind as I stood frozen in place. It was a bit of an adreneline rush....He said he could never have let his male out to meet me, that he is totally a one family dog...but his "girl" only needs to know that the person in question is a friend.

I'm sad, I doubt I'll ever get to meet one here! They are a banned breed here and were quite rare before the ban, so there aren't any around

Glad you didn't get eaten! A friend of mine breeds filas. Sure are cute looking. They don't look like they would be aggressive, but the are.

I haven't met a Fila either, but have heard that they are the most natural guard dogs around. No training necessary for these guys!

I've never met a Fila but I met a South African Boerboel on Friday and he was one amazing puppy. Glad you didn't get eaten.

Haha, I think I might have had a small heart attack if I was in your shoes. I've only ever met one, and that one the owner wasn't allowing anyone to pet. Had a good chat with the guy though, he obviously put a lot of time into his dog, and knew the breed. I like Filas, even though I don't live somewhere where I could have one. They seem to be one of those dogs that you need land and a secure fence just because they're not accepting of strangers. And in all honesty, the suburbs where I live isn't the place for a dog like that.

Glad you survived your encounter! I've only met one and he was un-touchable by anyone other than his owner. She was a really good client and breeds Mastiffs. She got the Fila to guard the Mastiffs. She said that since her Mastiffs would go with anyone, she always worried when leaving them in her car. She would leave the Fila in the car with them and I can promise you that NO ONE was going in it. Glad to hear that there are friendly ones out there.

We have a long time breeder here in Washington state. Eshabeta II.

I have encountered several Filas....nice dogs all from the above kennel. She seems to place them appropriately and I don't hear of them winding up in rescue.

They are impressive dogs and VERY loyal to their families and generaly NOT friendly with strangers. In Brasil, for example, judges are instructed not to touch them during the ring exam. YIKES.

I would certainly feel safe with one of these dogs around though!

This female would never make it in the show ring Brazil, that's for sure....not enough "ojeriza"....I think in Brazil, that they MUST show aggressiveness towards the judge to be considered for a win.

I did gulp, and close my eyes....LOL (thinking the whole time, show no fear..show no fear....and at the same knowing that old guy didn't have one iota of control on this dog)....

I've always wondered how a person would rescue one (I've seen them on the Fila rescue)....the first few days must be pretty intense...

Sounds like you had quite an experience, lol! I have been on the wrong side of an angry Fila before, so I think in your situation I would have had a heart attack! Haha

It is true that judges do not touch the Fila in the ring, but the Fila is not supposed to show wanton aggression toward the judge. They are supposed to stand calmly by their owner's side, watchful but unperturbed by their surroundings unless there is a true threat. There is a temperament test they will put the Fila through, and you can read what they do here: Standard F.C.I. - Fila brasileiro (scroll to the bottom of the page).

WOW I did not know all of that about them! The one I know must be a rare exception. He boards often and is always in daycamp, never aggressive with other dogs and seriously he is more velcro-y than my Doberman! He always plops down in my lap(ow!). I don't know what I did but he really likes me and it is so adorable, I wish I could steal him! It's always a treat when he boards His owner owns a bar and she brings him to work all the time with her to hang out, she says all he does is lounge around!
