Not a Snake: New Friend Ahoy!

Her name is Tiki!

She's 5 months, supposedly pure chi though who honestly knows. I had put my some feelers out for a rescue chi and got connected with someone who had put an ad out on CL for their mother who was apparently going into an assisted living facility and needed to find a home for her chihuahua. An hour's drive later and I went home with a tiny, all of her things, and a lot of tears shed from her elderly owner who was heartbroken to have to give her up.

She definitely has some sort of URI- we noticed the cough on the ride home and rerouted to our vet instead of taking her into the house. The vet is fairly confident it's not dog flu or kennel cough, but does believe it's some sort of bacterial infection and gave her meds to treat. She is also slightly underweight which does not surprise me considering what she'd been eating and how much.

Home and bathed and in a sweater for the cold night- she's on day #3 of her two week shutdown and is clearly beginning to feel much better. She's doing her best to get the other dogs to play with her (can't, she's quarantined until she stops coughing) and today has spent the past two hours making a game of scattering her toys all over her pen.

My view before I go to bed at night...

Once she's feeling better we'll get this potty training thing fully underway and maybe I won't have to buy stock in pads. We had a good short walk today despite the fact that she's clearly never been on leash before, and we're starting to master peeing outside... if I can get pooping outside going too I'd definitely appreciate it...

So far she's a great cuddle buddy and definitely a bold, confident, sassy little thing with a playful streak and a great love of food. I'd been toying around with the idea of getting a little since Creed was about 2, but the opportunity never really presented itself and I'm very picky on what temperament I'd want too. So far, she's pretty close to that ideal, so we'll see what she turns into once she settle in and starts maturing.

She spat out the molar on the right on her first night home. Creed's molar from when he was the same age in on the left. The size difference here is blowing my mind!

The picture of her in the x-pen is adorable.

She's very small! Easily the smallest dog I've ever had, though not the smallest I've ever trained.

She's right on 5lbs right now but the vet would like her to gain a few more ounces. The vet expects her adult weight to be between 6-8lbs but she could surprise us and stay so tiny or even get about twice the size! With her unknown pedigree it's hard to say if she's even pure chihuahua regardless of what she's claimed to be, and I know plenty "pure" chihuahuas that are 12lbs without being fat.

I joked that she could be the world's smallest IGP dog! But no, she's for obedience and for fun and for cuddles and not much else unless she decides she likes something a whole lot. Then we'll explore With Creed being a service dog, there are some things I would like to train a pet dog that I specifically trained Creed not to do (and visa versa), and I kind of just wanted a low pressure pet dog to balance out the competition and working dog stuff.

My every-day... Creed was banished because he squished her.

Tiki hates everything she has on here but I also don't care because cold puppies with zero recall don't get to go for walks naked or off leash.

We go for our URI recheck on Saturday... wish us luck that this will resolve soon, she still coughs at night sometimes.

Listen... I can't control the weather... I can't make it summer again no matter how much I'd like those 80-90F temperatures back myself! It's New England! It's freezing temperatures out here! And she shivers! So she's just going to have to deal with wearing sweater and PJs and no I don't care how much she protests

She'd prefer to be nude. I'd prefer no frostbite and hypothermia.

Congrats on the new addition!! Shes so small and cute.

I love her name. I had a cat named Tiki that was much bigger than yours!!

Why I oughta....

Tiki's vet visit went really well... sort of.

She has been given the all-clear to start interacting with other dogs besides the ones she's already been exposed to (ie- the resident dogs in the house) and the vet is fairly certain the remaining cough and sniffles are caused by irritation that hasn't quite yet healed from the bacterial infection and possible pneumonia, rather than anything contagious still lingering. She has gained a whole ounce! And she is happy and bright and clear.

However... there were some discrepancies on the vet paperwork I was given by her previous owner, which I noticed right away and had my vet followup on. It turns out her "vet records" had been falsified- I was given paperwork for a 10yo dog that hasn't seen the vet since 2006, and they had applied white-out and rewritten it to seem like it was for this dog, and then photo-copied it to make it harder to tell it was faked. My vet called the vet on the paperwork in front of me and that's that. Thus the problem with private rehoming and courtesy listings, people out there are shady for no reason and it's always the dog that loses. When you combine that with how skinny she is plus the obvious lack of quality vetcare, it makes me glad she ended up with someone who would spare no expense to make sure she is healthy again. At first I felt bad for the previous owners because it seemed like she was in loving, but misguided hands. Now I'm not so sure how I feel about them.

With her current condition we're on a plan for catching up on vaccinations, parasite prevention, and eventually a spay... but for right now I've been told to just make sure she's heartworm clear and nothing shows up on a fecal, then to stuff her with food until she's got some more muscle coverage.

What a deal ! I'm slow here But why would they even try to falsify the records in the first place Jaz ? to cover up Tiki never getting any treatment ? Like if they told the truth nobody would want her ?

That is a head shaker right there - Good thing Tiki and you got together

That's what I think, either that or to not get in trouble for having a dog over the legal age not vaccinated for rabies (it's 4mo here). It did seem like they really didn't have a lot of money to spare so it's possible they just couldn't afford vet bills (or food...) and tried to cover up their inability to do so as much as they could.
