Geocaching with TeamHellhound

We have our tenth logged find!

GPS Leo & Lily Large Fallen Pine by Rosemary Elwell, on Flickr

This was the hardest one yet, because of the spiders, mosquitoes, and heat we encountered while looking for it.

Nothing like bushwacking out in the TX wilderness.

Where the mosquitos can carry you away if you let them.......

I swear that they have been hybridized with Pterodactyls.

The cache was only about 20 feet into the trees, but some of the spiders were as big as, or bigger than, my hand once you included the legs.

And since we were close to the marsh, there was also the chance of alligators.

I'd say "no thanks" to that! But, way to go!

I nearly did when I figured out where it was, and saw all the spider webs between it and me.

However, we needed to log a trackable (a little something, sometimes a coin or small toy, that has a unique ID code) for their GeoPup Sports Novice title, and this has been one of the few caches in the area that had a trackable listed.

Anyway, we now have enough logged caches to apply for both their Beginner and Novice titles whenever I have a few dollars to spare. And Geocaching really is kind of fun. Sort of like a scavenger hunt, only you don't have to drag anything back with you.

I've heard about it; it looks fun and I'm interested. I see the geocache website to get started with (I assume), and sorta can see what could be involved. What kind of caching is the right choice for you?

Looks like a GPS is required? What do you use--a phone or some other device?

Questions, questions, questions........

Are there any informative websites, forums, etc I should go to?

Ummm......what should I know about the sport?

Ummmmmmm.....I don't even know quite where to start.

If you have a smart phone, then you already have a GPS. I have a free account, and downloaded the app to my phone. When out and about, I use my phone to find and log caches. Since we are city girls, we are looking mainly for urban caches. So far, our find locations include parks (this one is at a very large city park), cemeteries, and parking lots. Once it cools down, we might go looking for some along hiking trails that are within easy driving distance.

The Geocaching website has a forum under the "Community" tab. I've poked around a bit, and have found answers to most of my questions there.

If you are interested in your dog earning titles for Geocaching, which is what we are doing, they are done through the Facebook group GeoPup Sports https://www.facebook.com/groups/GeoPupSports/ All the rules and forms are there, and you can ask questions, as well.
