What is in my rescued dog's past?

I got a little clue today.

We put up a 30-inch deep splashing pool every summer in a small nook in our yard (a hot tub is for the winter--this is basically a cool tub for the summer). It is enclosed on three sides by a wood fence and the side of the house, and is basically tucked away out of sight unless you crane your neck to look for it from the patio door. The dog has never shown any interest in this area--with or without its pool.

Even though we have no kids living within at least a half-mile of us, I decided it would be better if I at least had the thing walled off to make it harder to access, so I enclosed it using metal u-channel posts and four-foot X-pen fencing on that fourth side.

As I stepped back to into the rest of the yard to admire my job, the dog immediately started digging at the bottom of this fence.

Hmmmm..........

We have 1/2 acre yard with no other fencing....so he was basically standing in an largish unfenced yard trying to get into the little 15' by 20' area. It has a wooden fence on two sides; another side is the house, and the fourth my new X-pen construction (where he decided to dig).

McCoy is also a fence digger. and for no apparent reason. At this point, we leave the back yard totally unsecured. It would never occur to him to leave it, unless it was an extreme
circumstance, like a bitch in heat. Same with the front door. I can leave it wide open and he will just walk down take a look and walk back up. Butcher was the same exact way. He never had to be "locked down" after a certain age.

So yeah... The fence digging is a mystery to me.

I just love me a good head tilt, which he actually does much better than this.....but not in front of the camera I have to work on getting a better video of that, but for right now, just a teaser....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evMJoMeAtss

Someone did a very good job of teaching this guy manners......no chewing on illicit things, no begging if I nosh as I watch TV, comes joyfully when called, does just the right amount of sitting on my feet, and doesn't melt in the heat quite as insistently as the dobes did (it is actually possible to walk further than a 1/4 mile when it is in the upper 80's.) I can put him out for a few minutes and he finds himself a cool place in the grass to lie down and sacks out (no insisting that I join him because he is lonely).

And when he and the cat get the zoomies at the same time, we can't stop laughing.

But......we're still working on the mouthing. We have gone from heavy duty to foot nibbling and finger sucking, but when excitement takes over, he reverts. And his "get off my lap" command could use a little work.

All together he's a most satisfactory guy.

A lot of the suggested videos are based on your past viewing history. I get nursery rhyme videos or Winx Club videos as suggestions. Guess what my kids watch a lot of....
