Looking for a good rescue for lab/newfoundland pup

Hi all,

A coworker of mine is looking to re-home his roughly 10 month old lab/newfoundland mix. He is neutered, but they didn't do much training with him and so he is a ball of pent-up energy. They are now working opposing shifts, and don't feel that they can really give him the home that he deserves. Do any of you know of any good lab or newfoundland rescues that would take an owner surrender from MN?

They had sent him to a lady in ND, after she told them everything they wanted to hear about how she is a dog lover, has the perfect place for him, etc....and now after only 4 days she says he is "untrainable", doesn't play nice with her cats (he has never seen a cat before her home), and bugs her 5 month husky mix bitch too much. She said that she would find him a home to go to that fits him better - I told him to go get the dog and look for a good rescue that could take him and find him a proper home.

Any ideas?

Try Pet Haven here in MN - they are a reputable all breed rescue. I can come up with some other rescues for you if that doesn't pan out.

Thanks MC! I know of a few places in Hudson as well, SO's sister fosters regularly with Secondhand Hounds also. Not sure if she currently has any dogs but I bet she would be a good resource too. I will give Pet Haven a call.

I sent him a link to Pet Haven's surrender request. Not sure he's gonna go for it, as the dog is apparently all the way in Fargo and the lady he gave him too seems a little bats*** crazy to me. Hopefully he can get him back, I can't believe he just trusted some random person. I wish I could take him, but that definitely can't happen.

So, he doesn't want to go up to Fargo to get him back, or the other lady doesn't want to give him back? I'm confused.

We have Doberman club members up that way, so I can connect with them to see if they know of any good rescues up there, if need be. But yeah, this is unfortunately the kind of thing that happens all too often with young energetic large breed dogs.

Sounds like a bit of both. It seems like his wife is more unwilling to get him back (she doesn't understand what a rescue is as opposed to a shelter). It sounds like she just doesn't want to deal with him anymore, but it seems my friend is more worried about his well-being and doing right by him. The lady described herself as a "professional dog person" - which to me (since she obviously is not a trainer and doesn't know much about large breed dogs) means that she is more of a bleeding heart "how could you rehome your dog, I'm not giving him back to irresponsible people like you" types.

Ugh. The poor pup
