Just had our lawn core aerated last week, so of course it's going to rain buckets to wash all the grass seeds away...they're predicting 3-5 inches over the next 24 hours. Fun fun fun!

The seeds will end up in my neighbor's yard, so he'll thank me

Our deck is torn down, so Mocha is confused...no going out the back door to go potty now. I have to take her out the front door, and walk around to the backyard. Yesterday, after she finished, she went to where the deck stairs used to be and looked me like "WTH, dad?"

So Pepto-Bismol contains a salicylate--closely related to aspirin which isn't really the best thing to be dosing dogs with. Kaopectate added the same salicylate so I quit giving it. Although you could still get the original formula kaopectate from farm ecquipment and supply stores or sometimes from feed stores (mostly only in gallon jugs (it's original market was for calves with scours).

Then KV Vet (I think) started selling the original formula in quarts--the shipping was more expensive than the quart of kaopectate).

And a few years ago one of the vets on these forums said that there was a pill form of kaopectate. So there are a couple of them but the one I get now is called Pro-Pectalin--comes in chewable tabs. It is basically the same thing as the old ksopectin--kaolin--white clay and pectin--the same stuff your grandmother used to thinken jellies. The combination will stop common diarrhea in it's tracks--when caused basically by dietary indiscretion (too much food or things like decayed birds). No antibiotics. The basic formula can be traced back to (at least) medieval Europe and England through manuscripts that had formulas for common farm animal problems.

I avoid letting my dogs eat grass of any kind--I've seen too many disasters that ended up having the grass blockage surgically removed (Dobermans are morons about eating grass).

The tablets, by the way are BIG--but are intended to be chewables and any dog I've handed one to things they are a treat. The are also good for settle0-ing stomachs.

I thought it was, at first, and I panicked because I have no way of raising kittens, but fortunately it wasn't Sissy, it was her daughter, Dasher. So the kittens still have a mommy, but I wish I knew what got Dasher. Poor Jasper (the Pyr) is only one dog, and he can't be everywhere at once, I guess, and we're going to start losing things here and there without Kiara as his backup. She was old and couldn't run very fast, but her very presence kept the "bad guys" out of her immediate vicinity. And if she sensed something wrong, she'd call Jasper and tell him where to go to find the bad guy, and off he went. He's kind of lost without her. We only have about 15 acres, which one dog should be able to cover adequately, but there are so many trees, shrubs, hedges, and brush everywhere it's hard to SEE everywhere. And the bad guys know how to sneak in using that cover to their advantage. I think we're going to have to try and see about getting him another partner. I'd let our hairy dog, Missy, go out and help, but she likes to chase chickens, so that won't work.

Well, shoot, I've done another farm report, haven't I? LOL! Well, it's what I do, so it's what I talk about, I can't help it!
Sorry to hear about the kitty, Lannie....that would be tough for me, that part about owning farm cats. I know they are useful and necessary, but the shorter lifespan and the risk would make it rough. For what it's worth, it's possible that at 5-6 weeks old, kittens could be weaned successfully, if they have a safe space to stay, and especially if they had a friendly adult female that might step in for some of the "mothering", if not nursing. I've raised litters and a litter of 5 week olds is much easier to take over than say, 2 or 3 week olds. You would probably be pretty successful with them, even with no experience....

Ha! Sometimes it's uncanny...any small change in the backyard, whether it's a garbage bag full of grass clippings or a new flower pot, it's the first thing she'll zero in on and go investigate. And when we go on our walks, we always go the same way, except if my wife goes along, then we start at the parking lot and walk the trail backwards and I can tell Mocha is always out of sorts.

Yesterday we had the back door open (screen/storm door was locked) and she stood there staring out at what used to be a deck and is now empty space, it was actually quite comical to watch her trying to figure it out.

How long before the new deck comes in? We had a front door to nowhere halfway up the house's ground floor for a long time (there were delays in shipping the new door, which was semi-custom). They demo'd the deck and took the old door out to measure everything. The door was put back in without really doing a total reinstall because they expected the new one "any minute"--for a month or two. Which meant they pushed back the date for the deck install too...something about the way they fit against each other.

The wood was delivered today; the concrete in the post holes has to set, and with the rain we're supposed to get they won't be able to start till probably Monday; should be complete by Friday. Once the deck is complete, they're going to put in a 14X14 foot stamped concrete patio.

Yeah--pro-pectalin--I think Vetoquinol is the distributor--(didn't have that much information on the label--and I don't think it's really a prescription med but won't swear to that--when we order it it comes via one of the vet supply outfits but lord knows a lot of what we get isn't prescription.

Those tabs should really keep practically forever if they are kept dry. Clay doesn't deteriorate with age and packets of pectin--now have expiration dates but as long as the package wasn't opened they seemed to keep forever.

Yeah, I'm always good for alternate sources of stuff like an upset stomach/diarrhea remedy.

Lady Di,

Hoss would probably do the same thing Toad did when he saw the giant spider on the roof of the neighbor across the street. Huge thing with big red eyes and a body that had red lights and a blue which started silver and slowly turned blue. He must not have seen it last year but the other evening he spotted it, froze in his tracks and finally barked at it (Toad who hardly ever barks at anything...)

Thanks TN! - There may be something to this. We feed Mila around 4 pm and fed again around 7 - 8am.....Last night she woke up around 1:45am and was smacking. My wife took her out to the living room. I told her to give her some food.

I asked how that went - Mila stopped smacking and settled down. Will try and see if giving her a bit before we go to bed will work. We get a late night snack so guess she can as well

Although while outside this afternoon - she got something out of the ground ….I called her and she held her mouth in that way that says she isn't giving it up and pranced away. So I went to her and stopped her as she was eating an acorn!

Kenny,

Why can't you appease a farm girl wannabe? Louder music while I am riding along please!

Was that your wife driving along collecting the grain?

I remember you told us that she demanded a JD.

Thought I'd throw that out there because it happened to us and at first, we had no idea what was going on until someone here mentioned it could be because of an empty stomach. Acorns...ugh...we have to watch Mocha like a hawk because she likes to graze on our plants and flowers (which is why we put up a fence way in the back where we have the hostas and some other stuff). She was way worse when she was younger...I thought she had Pica but as she grew older, she stopped trying to eat everything she found (thank goodness) and now it's our plants and flowers and I think it's more of a can-I-get-away-with-this-before-dad-scolds-me thing than an actual desire to eat shrubbery. Yes, I just said "shrubbery" like I was in a Monty Python episode LOL
