Oh, what I wouldn't give for some more 80s, heck, I'd even take 90s! We're supposed to hit 68 or so today, then 75 tomorrow, then 42 Wednesday, and the snow starts. They're forecasting a total of 10 inches between Wednesday evening and Friday morning, and the HIGHS won't even be above freezing for the duration of the storm. Next weekend the weather guessers *think* we might get up to mid 30s to low 40s. It's too early for this much snow and cold. The critters don't have their winter coats yet, and WE DON'T HAVE OUR HAY YET. And our backup heater in the house (a little propane-powered fireplace thingie) went belly up on us, and our main woodstove, which is perfectly fine except we have no wood, won't be any help, so we're looking at a winter with nothing to warm the house but two space heaters. I hate winter and my adrenaline is all jacked up now, trying to figure out how to handle all this. Please, God, don't let the power go out during the storm. ANY storm.

(However, sounds like you've got the duck stuff down...)

I'm sure Lannie will have lots of input on this subject, but she only logs in twice/day when she's able to bounce a signal off a satellite passing over SD...
Here I are, for my daily visit. The rule of thumb is one rooster per ten hens, IF you want a rooster. Of course, you don't need one, unless you want some of the girls to hatch eggs. We have too many roosters and it seems like all of our girls hatched at least some chicks this summer. We are over-run with chickens, and they're gonna need feeding once the snow covers up all their foraging opportunities. Someone must have cursed me with that famous curse, "May you live in interesting times." Things are about to get interesting.

I have a calf story, too! My calf was my friends "steer". I got the opportunity to farm sit while she was showing her horses. Said calf/steer got on the wrong side of the fence and I had to go fetch Buster. It wasn't funny when I got him on the correct side of the fence. He wanted to play!

There was nothing to do but bluff him. The house was never so far away than it was that day.

Whew!
The calf's name IS Oliver! LOL! I'm sure I mentioned it somewhere. I'm not sure if our camera does video, I've never checked. If it does, once I settle down, I'll play around with it and see if I can capture a few "moments" for you guys. It's a bulky camera, though, and it won't fit in a pocket, so it's always being forgotten at the house when we go out to do chores and stuff.

Unless a bovine has been coddled and spoiled (ask me how I learned this lesson) as a youngster, they're usually pretty easy to bluff with some jumping around, arm waving, and hollering. I can usually herd Oliver by doing nothing more than walking calmly behind him. I bring a riding crop with me as an extension of my arm, so if I have to turn him, I hold the stick out the way I don't want him to go, and he goes away from the stick and where I want him to be. If he's full of pissenvinegar he might do a quick u-turn around me and I have to go start over, but mostly he's a good boy. The girls usually give me no trouble at all if I have to go after them, because they know there's treats in the barn. Most of the time, I only have to call them, and they come right in.

I did have one bull calf once, though, that scared me. No way I wanted to be out in the pasture with him, because he'd run at me and NOT STOP. I was younger then and had better knees, so I could jump sideways if I had to, but I took to carrying a BIG stick (no wimpy riding crop for this guy) whenever I had to be out in the open with him. And he wasn't that old, only 6 months, so he should have still been docile and friendly. Anyway, one day he pushed me too far and I said that's IT, so we loaded him on the trailer and took him to the sale barn that day. His mama was heartbroken (for some reason, SHE loved him) and looked for him for a week, and broke MY heart by coming up to me every time she saw me and asking me where he was, crying, and pleading with me to help her find him, and anyone that thinks cows can't communicate clearly like that has never lived with a cow. I vowed never to just yank a baby off a mom again, no matter how obnoxious the kid is, and now we do fenceline weaning, where we put the youngster on the other side of a cross-fence through the pasture, so they can see each other, but not interact. That makes the separation more bearable, and after a week or two of that, then the kid can go to his or her new home without too much fuss from mama.

Yo Lannie,

I did remember to check the name of the antibiotic that took care of the URI (AKA cat snot disease) but came home from the clinic (where I found all of the vets plus the dental specialist having a seminar on canine and feline dentistry starting with the tools through surgery post extractions). Anyway I came home feeling like I'd been hit in the head with a hammer and never got back on the computer.

But slightly belated--the drug (antibiotic) is famciclovir (from it's name I got to wondering if it wasn't an antiviral?==I don't know but that's what it is. Oral med and for our big fat clinic kitty it was 1 ml PO BID for 15 days. I'm sure the dosage would be far less than that for scrawny lil' feral kittens. I'd also guess that it is hideously expensive.

From Reinhardt's (fat cat) records it looks like he only needed about three days of dosing to stop the snotty sniffles. Seems to be entirely over it now.

It's supposed to hit us Thursday/Thursday night. Probably just a glancing blow, but our temps are going to drop. The forecast gets worse and worse, but so far they're not committing themselves about the amount.

Hey1 For all of you guys who were doing complex computations on translating CT thread page to post counts as opposed to Melbrods page to post counts.

Recently I posted the answer to that but DT ATE it and it so pizzed me off I didn't even complain about it.

But way, way, way back (because I read it when I first started reading the CT and had to go back and read backwards and forwards until I got to that days posts.

And what did I say in that missing post? I said that the default for DT on posts per page was 25 but that Mel had posted long, long ago that she had changed it on her computer to 50 posts per page. No computations required.

Ask any of the folks who are in any of the northern states that border Canada--the weather guru's around here have been saying increasing cold weaither both day and night and increasing possibity of snow. Yesterday the local forecasts went from a high on Sunday of 71 degrees to a predicted high of 68 degrees here today and then dropping on Tuesday to 58 degrees and rain for us here on the valley floor (Oregon) and snow in the mountains dropping from 6,000 feet to 1,500 feet (which means some of the higher elevations of outlying Portland could get snow.

So yeah, I've definitely heard this--and I think the snow for South Dakota (see Lannie's post) and Minnesota (see MeadowCat's posts) is supposed to be substantial.

I also heard something (but was just coming in from the yard so I didnt' hear it all) about increasing possibility of low temperatures and snow headed east in the northern areas.

Look out Ken--the weather forces are out to get ya'.

And late last week some poor bugger (also in Indiana) was showing his failed corn crop to an interviewer--pretty sad--totally dried--looked like everything was dead--he peeled a would be ear of corn--scattered kernel but nothing worth harvesting.

But in Oregon a hop farmer who had also put in a big field of hemp (which under license recently became legal here)--was doing a show and tell for an interviewer--showed him the uncut field and said he had no idea it would look like a forest at harvest time--he was harvesting with the same big rig he uses for hops (looked a lot like your set up for soy beans)--for the hemp they do a running off load in field. The cats and Toad and I thought of you while we watched it.

It's gonna' rain here for a couple of days--I'm going to go mow the front lawn (this is really early for me to have a lawn that needs mowing--usually my summer dry/Toad colored lawns don't turn green until late October) before it does that.

Later group...

Maybe both AJ--and I just read a fairly hair raising future history scifi novel that gave me the creeps. "Different Seasons, (monsoon--something--I can't remember)--I'll have to look it up. The future in this case is today--with the temperant zones drying out and the sub artic zones turning into rainforest temperant.

Book one of what looks like two--I assume they save the world in book two.

PS Aha--I found the library slip (and also found out why with their fancy new on line catalog I can't find things)--The title of the book is "Different Seasons: monsoonrise"

The library lists it as "Monsoonrse"--I was trying to look up the author but the on line catalog insisted that the library had no such volume as Different Seasons. DUH.

Thanks Aunt B ! I have been receiving some emails today that both Dakota's Parts of MN and WI - lots of Iowa could get boat loads of that white Chit ! Like 15 to 18 inches of it ! Calling for a low of 39 here at the end of the week - if it does and it frosts - or worse - hits 28 or lower - there is lots of crops that will be heavily Damaged - My beans will be ok and pretty sure that my corn will be to . Nothing but problems here today - Think its about time to let some young guy learn about worrying .

76 high predicted here for Wednesday...34 high for Thursday...12 degrees over Thursday night.

Usually with that kind of temperature drop, we get a lot of snow. All they're saying here is 80% chance of snow, maybe heavy.

My poor cottonwood lost several biggish limbs with a late heavy snowfall last spring because it had already leafed out and held the snow on the branches. It hasn't lost its leaves yet this fall. They're not even yellow yet. *sigh*

Well, I built me a raft and she's ready for floatin'
Ol' Mississippi, she's callin' my name
Catfish are jumpin'
That paddle wheel thumpin'
Black water keeps rollin' on past just the same
Old black water, keep on rollin'
Mississippi moon, won't you keep on shinin' on me
Old black water, keep on rollin'
Mississippi moon, won't you keep on shinin' on me
Old black water, keep on rollin'
Mississippi moon, won't you keep on shinin' on me
Yeah, keep on shinin' your light
Gonna make everything
Pretty mama gonna make everything all right
And I ain't got no worries
'Cause I ain't in no hurry at all

But way, way, way back (because I read it when I first started reading the CT and had to go back and read backwards and forwards until I got to that days posts.

And what did I say in that missing post? I said that the default for DT on posts per page was 25 but that Mel had posted long, long ago that she had changed it on her computer to 50 posts per page. No computations required.

But I don't know what to give you as a prize because you NEVER need a GOOTWS Free Card.

Maybe just some nice cat pictures--I know, download time--but really, what do you give a person who has everything?

And I thought this one would be appropriate for the week:

Beautiful cats! I like the fat fluffy ones the best, but outside. I've got enough vacuuming to do, as it is.

BTW, Pat is still alive. What is Pat eating and drinking to stay alive this long?

I need my cleaning bucket back.
