Replicas of the Niña and Pinta are currently docked on Riverside Drive here in town so I took a drive down there early this morning to get a few pics. I can't imagine crossing an ocean in one of those things; you know they were packed with people and supplies.

Really? From the displays on specials and the sheer amount of footage given to it in most big grocery stores I'd say it's one of the hot sellers--and that's from the Portland, Oregon area--a whole lot farther from Florida than Oklahoma. Yes?

And it's been around here for years--come to think of it they are now advertising on television occasionally.

I'll concede that I've never heard of Rufus Teague and that I know Jack Daniel's only for their booze.

Oooops--sorry TN--not Florida--I meant Tennessee--I keep telling ya'll about how retarded taking gabapentin makes me--just proved it here.

And if you sail--you'll have a pretty good idea of just how unmanageable those square rigged sails and boomed foresails are to handle in any wind at all. After I saw my first square rigged replica (Santa Maria--at one of Seattle's SeaFair celecbrations) I was amazed that any of those ships ever managed to get anywhere that was any substantial distance from 'home'--where ever home was.

Sweet Baby Ray's is all I use anymore. Sometimes as is, and other times I'll add things like the Sriracha sauce (the one with the rooster on it) to change things up, depending on what's on the grill or in the smoker.

I was surprised how small these boats are; I had imagined them to be a lot bigger. I've never sailed; navigating the Cumberland river amongst the big barges, other bass boats, and ski boats in my bass boat was challenging enough for me LOL

I've been up for HOURS already. Son has a piano recital this afternoon and woke me up early with his anxious practicing.

Which gave me a chance to go out and adjust the sprinkler heads while they were actually going instead of having to run around turning them on one at a time to work on them.

NOW, it's breakfast time. Or at least time to get my diet coke/caffeine fix.

I dig Coke for breakfast!

And, I saved a turtle from getting squished in the parking lot at the convenience store off the highway, this morning.

Two sets of people came in the store and asked me if I saved the turtle. I said yes I love turtles. The first old couple actually came in the store to thank me. The husband said maybe he was pulling in to get gas. I said yes he had to fuel his RV. Husband looked like he was struggling to understand what I said. Wife said he was fueling his camper and walked out the door. Guess they can only afford a camper.

Second dude was in his truck, just sitting there. I walked around his truck and picked the turtle up and took it into the grass. He came in the store and told me thank you, as well. Then started a story about how his daughters or granddaughters were on a mission to save turtles.

Exciting morning!

If my family was out on a drive and saw a turtle in the road, we always stopped and rescued him, usually taking him home to be a "pet". We kids would put him gently in a pen and hang around watching him the rest of the day, poking lettuce leaves in his face in an attempt to get him to eat. The next morning, my father would sadly announce that the turtle must have escaped overnight; he was GONE!!!

I must have been slow on the uptake...it took me quite a while to realize that the turtle in all likelihood had a bit of help in making his jailbreak.

STJ picked the black and brownish chick. He wanted a pink one. Because he is gay. Told him I don't have a pink one. So I guess the black and sliver one is Frank.

I will put a pink leg band on Bad Johnny!

Now I got to go Tractor Supply and buy leg bands?

What?

SP, you're still supposed to be looking out for the bossiest one for me.

Or maybe I'll just have to adopt all of the poor little left-overs that nobody else wants.

Why does a 60+ yo woman have a son practicing piano in her home? Don't tell me that you have a 30 something kid living in your basement!

How did you know? He has a bedroom, rec room, bathroom suite down there. The ferrets hang out down there too. It's a garden level basement, so the rec room windows are above grade; the bedroom window well is about 30 inches deep. I can look out the window and see over the edge of well's wall.

Seriously though, he's 34, autistic (Asperger's) and will probably be living here forever. The piano's not so bad really; when he fires up the pipe organ in the den, he can make the floors upstairs shake (if I let him.)

Sorry Mel..

I was just joking. I had no idea you were dealing with an autistic son.

My son wanted out and on his on by age 18. He moved out at 19 and with the exception of insurance and college tuition, he has supported himself ever since.

Some of us (like me) just take this kind of thing for granted.

Me... I was out of the house at 18 (with my parents' help). They could not have been happier to get rid of me. Especially 2500 miles away!.

Again... My bad.

Actually that's the very first thing most people (me included) notice is how very small those boats are that set out across a sea that as far as they knew no one had crossed before. And then if you take a look at the rigging you realize why they carried those big crews--they needed all that muscle to just do dumb things like furl the sails. And anchoring and raising the anchor to get out of someplace must have been another scene--many of the anchors relied on dead weight to keep the vessel anchored. Pretty amazing I think.

And as far as figuring that a bass boat was enough of a challenge for you---I can tell you that getting out of a crowded harbor is usually frightening--a friend of mine who had taken his brand new racing trimaran down to San Pedro for some reason--maybe some rigging genius was down there and was going to fine tune his rig--anyway he pulled away from a dock--under sail and something very large got sort of behind him cutting off the wind and a BIG freighter caught up with him and he was trying to escape the freighter and the freighter was doing it's best to veer off enough to miss him-it hit him in the middle of the aft of his starboard pontoon (which is the piece that attaches the main hull and one of the floats to each other)--he got out of the wind shadow just as the freighter hit him--it bounced him up on it's bow wave (which is substantial even at very slow speeds) and he caught a puff of wind--that boat could go--and it went--and escaped the freighter and sailed back up to Marina Del Rey. I saw it a couple of days later--prefect vee mprint on the back of that pontoon--he said (don't take me to the woodshed Mel) F**K no! I'm going to leave it there to remind me just how big freighters are."

I gotta' say--he was a pretty hard guy to scare and he said he was as frightened that night as he's ever been.

Don't be silly. If I felt bad about what you said, I didn't have to even respond to your comments.

It's no secret; I've talked about him here before. Asperger's for him at this point basically just means we get to talk about what he is interested in a lot more than I want to. *roll eyes* At least, his areas of interest are, for the most part, NOT mine.

He's very talented in some areas (music, math, hard sciences, computer programming), just lacking in some others. So he's not entirely independent, but he's mostly grown out of the hard to manage behavioral stuff.

No biggie.

Besides, I wouldn't have had the *joy* of having ferrets to clean up after if he weren't living here.
