Not quite on the same scale, but I remember turning on the TV and seeing the space shuttle Challenger take off...I thought, "Oh, I didn't know it was supposed to launch today" and then I watched it blow up.

Yeah - I remember both pretty well - I was home and wife worked at her brothers office at that time - Seen the shuttle go ca-blewie - We were on vacation shorty after that - was at Coco Beach - right next to Cape Carnival Port - Went do to Jetty Park - entrance to the port - seen ships come in with shuttle parts on the decks - most had tarps covering it , then every morning - military guys would be walking the beach looking for parts that may have floated in over night .

9/11 - we races the night before - didn't get in till 2:30 am - I was sleeping in with Kasia - Walked out to the kitchen to get my cup of mud - asked wife what had happened - all she knew was a plane hit a building then as I was watching - the second one come in .

As we all know - they shut down all flights - as we live out I the sticks - we never ever thought about the planes that crossed overhead everyday - till there was none - it was so quite here then

Does anyone remember this thread started by ClipClop....she was actually practically across the street during the Two Towers attack....her account is harrowing:

Worth rereading perhaps...

The people of France have been agitated all winter , week after week of the "yellow vest" revolt. I do not think if this was criminal sabotage we would ever learn the truth. I only hope that it is rebuilt.

If it was truly caused by sabotage, the actual damage that has been done so far is probably less than the damage that would be done to the country, its government and people if they found out for sure that it was due to a terrorism attack, and acted on that anger.

In the long run, even if it was malicious, is it better for the country to hide that fact, or face the turmoil and anger that would follow a release of that information? I would certainly want the people who were responsible, if it was arson or terrorism, to be caught; I would want their sponsors to be taken out, but I would also fear what might happen to innocents who get swept up into the upheaval that would follow.

I really dunno which would be better....

The Truth is always the best. If it was malicious i would not consider it terrorism just a culture clash that is happening in Europe and the erasure of its history and culture.

We had better stop this talk , it will piss off SP and she can send us to the woodshed!

My guess is that it was a construction accident - the building was only 800 + years old - How dry would that wood be ?? It's to bad it had to happen .

BTW - Come on Alan ! I'm not afraid of SP ! Mel ? MC ? Damn straight I am

Looks like the damage may not be *quite* as bad as they had feared....still.....

I went grocery shopping today!!!!
I hate grocery shopping, but when you're down to a chunk of cheese, a bag or two of noodles and a couple of boxes of cereal (no milk), it's kinda time. And yesterday we brought in Chinese (because there was no food in the house ), so there's still some of that left over. I DON'T HAVE TO COOK TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!

Happy me.

I have to call my real brother out to give me a tutorial on my cameras.

I really get discombobulated with computer $hit. Just give me a simple engine.

Beau Political Corner...FAKE NEWS suggests, a roof fire IMPO.

The White Patriots in Yellow Vests (rural farmers that got a huge Fuel Tax) are no different than the Yellow Vests, we now have in Alberta Canada...180,000 layoff coming & GDP 0.1 to 0.4% range currently.
- our PM Justin Trudeau has sold out our great & peaceful Canada, to the UN World Order / and importing Immigrants, by the millions now
- he has ruined our Oil Industry, stopped our Pipe Lines and added a nasty Carbon Tax...effective April 1, 2019
- if the Conservatives don't get elected in October 2019
- Canada will find itself, just as unsafe as Europe, UK and Paris...in a decades time
- we have already experienced Terror Attacks // more surely come
- women & young women have been gang raped in UK...hushed over 10 years
- it will not get better, before it gets worse
- I have the utmost respect, for the Yellow Vest protectors / our Liberal Government, is destroying our "way of life" here

Twelve French Churches Attacked, Vandalized in One Week
https://www.breitbart.com/faith/2019...8SDTjCJe9A4rJc

MichaelNightmare • a month ago
This is what happens when you let a bunh of Muslims into your country as a goodwill gesture. Think about this for a minute, what kind of fundamentals does this religion teach to where a country takes you in & you respond by raping their women, getting on welfare, & commit terrorist acts?

Victor M. C. Gonzalez Vlad Untruksur • 8 hours ago
France needs to get rid of the Muslims by all means necessary. A dozen Catholic churches have been desecrated across France over the period of one week in an egregious case of anti-Christian vandalism.
The recent spate of church profanations has puzzled both police and ecclesiastical leaders, who have mostly remained silent as the violations have spread up and down France.
Last Sunday, marauders set fire to the church of Saint-Sulpice — one of Paris’ largest and most important churches — shortly after the twelve-o’clock Mass.

Kasperlos • a month ago
The war against the West was planned long ago by the globalists and their confederates. The orchestrated step by step destruction has entered the late phase. Few understand what is taking place, how it is taking place, why it is taking place, by whom it is taking place. The new world order will be one of control, oppression, tyranny, totalitarianism, and collectivism. All brought to you by the social engineers from the Frankfurt School for Social Research, a Marxist laboratory for indoctrination. Few read, know, understand, and therefore the sinister forces have been able to move forward decade after decade until the final nail is driven into the coffin of freedom, sovereignty of the nation states, and individuality. Be prepared.

TJJ • a month ago
So? Who care?
Islam was allowed to literally slit the throat of a priest and the French did nothing.
They have already set the precedent that the church can be attacked without reprisals.
I always say a country belongs to those with the strength and will to fight for it, that's why despite not really liking Israel as a concept, the way they defended themselves against total annihilation at the hands of Muslims hoards, I fully recognize as Israel's rightful claim to their lands.
Any country not willing to fight for themselves deserve to not exist and will deserve whatever comes to them.

-------------------------------------

Amidst the smoke and flames, the massive destruction at Notre Dame Cathedral seems emblematic of change in Western civilization since the beginning of the 20th century.

Whether you are religious or not the cathedral is a beautiful structure...The work on the cathedral started in 1163, it took 182 years to complete this building in the summer of 1345

It's the same all over Europe. Poland and Hungary , however have stood against their immigration. These two nations have maintained their Christian values and have a clear vision about how to keep their borders safe.

The building, the cornerstone of which was laid in 1163, is the most visited monument in Paris, with more than 12 million people coming each year — nearly double the people who visit the Eiffel Tower. Its intricate stone gargoyles, spires, stained glass and flying buttresses have made it one of the great masterpieces of architecture.

Initial reports in the French press suggested that many of those pieces had already been removed last week during the renovations, and Finot said that the cathedral’s collection of sacred items, kept in the sacristy, were likely unharmed. “Normally there is no risk of things being burned,” he said

Later, officials confirmed that two of the cathedral’s most precious relics survived the flames: a tunic worn by Saint Louis, a 13th-century French king, and the crown of thorns that Jesus Christ is said to have worn before his crucifixion.

Until Monday night, Notre Dame had managed to withstand both the elements and the vicissitudes of history that left their mark elsewhere in the French capital: the French Revolution, the Paris Commune, two world wars and Adolf Hitler’s demolition plans in 1944.

Such a monument belongs not just to France, but to the entire world. This is a horrible cultural loss.

I'm with Beau on this one, careless worker safety practices. Read the roof was constructed from all the tree timbers that had surrounded the location. Old wood is very dried out and prone to ignition. About 90% fire incidents I have experienced aboard ship were from bad contractor safety procedures. My bet is on either sparks from metal cutting/grinding or smoking. I have not read if they were using cutting torches on roof, frequently used to cut old frozen bolts/nuts/turnbuckles off.

Just posted article on French refurb contractor, Le Bras Freres:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...abilities.html

"Work using electric tools had been going on in the roof, but the fire caused the iconic spire to collapse. It comprised 250 tonnes of lead and stood 315ft tall."

Once on a previous ship moored at old dock in Houston turning basin, we had a small fire start on the dock 12x12 ancient creosote crosstimbers. We got it extinguished promptly with a 12 ft. fog applicator appliance on fire hose inserted between hull and dock. Found out contractors had been pitching cigarette butts between ship and dock when coming aboard vessel, since we had a no smoking policy, except in designated smoking areas. The butts bounced off hull plating and landed on dock cross member ingniting shavings of dryed wood.

In my personal experience, many contractors from Asia and Eastern EU contries are insanely avid smokers. We had a time keeping S. Korean barge crewmembers from smoking on deck during an active POL transfer. Even the 3rd party tank inspector wanted to smoke while walking around the barge (moored alongside ship) when checking empty fuel tanks!

Here's an interesting article in NYT from 2017 about needed repairs at Notre Dame, asking for Americans to pitch in. $40M urgent repairs with goal of $110M.

News says they're interviewing construction guys and everyone is freely cooperating.

Yeah, I'm sure....but poor guys, even if it was their own negligence. And even if they never find a specific construction action (but know that's what it was), this will follow them forever.

They just updated story and I also heard from reporter on scene that workers had knocked off work at time of first fire alarm.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...abilities.html

"Investigators believe the devastating blaze started in the roof cavity below the spire where the work, which included the use of electric tools, was being carried out.

The blaze was discovered at around 6.50pm but workers would reportedly have downed tools between 5pm and 5.30pm.

According to investigators, an alarm went off at 6.20pm, interrupting a Mass, but no fire was found. The alarm then sounded again at 6.43pm, by which time the flames were burning out of control."

Per NFPA Hotwork Safety Standard:
"Fires can start after the hot work is complete. The fire watch must remain on site for a minimum of 60 minutes to monitor for smoldering fires, per NFPA 51B, Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work (2019 edition)."

The 60 minute rule is very important around old, dry wood structures, such as we experienced on our dock fire incident. Again, a smoldering fire incident happened aboard another vessel with a stowed mooring line in rack on fantail. Fire started almost an hour after hotwork overhead was competed by S. Korean contractors, by an ember blown into old, dried pallet, on which the mooring lines were stowed atop. Was put out immediately by crew fire teams alerted, but not before it ruined 2 x $4K Kevlar mooring lines.
