Do you have hummingbird feeders? For years I have had hummingbird feeders. Not this year! This year I have hanging bee hives!

I need to put more juice out for them.

Good John the bee keeper!

Collect the honey and sell it!

TN should be selling T-shirts.

I, for sure, am going to be selling eggs!

African Greys are wicked smart.

From a book Alex and Me, one part really stuck with me:

Dr. Pepperberg wrote of their effort to teach Alex phonemes [a particular sound in a language, often represented by a letter, or a couple of letters], using colored tokens marked with letter combinations like sh and ch.

She showed off his abilities in an interview.

“What sound is green?”
“Ssshh,” Alex answered correctly, and then demanded a nut.

Instead he got another question.
“What sound is orange?”
“Ch.”

“Good bird!”

“Want a nut!” Alex demanded. The interview ended.

“Want a nut!” he said again. “Nnn ... uh ... tuh."

Of course, he could have just been saying the word “nut” in a slow drawn out way--they had never taught him anything like putting the sounds he had learned together to make words. Or was he actually spelling?

Alex died at 31, young for a parrot. And there is a lot of argument about whether he really knew what he was saying, or had just been conditioned to respond in a certain way to subtle unconscious clues the teacher was making.

African Greys actually know what they are saying! Such smart birds. I thought about getting one back when. But thought again when I realized it would pick up all my cuss words, plus I had HBO at the time. I was watching a lot of shows that spouted potty words. I would also have to find another forever home for it. They live forever.

Actually, I gave him away to a good friend that had other birds, always wanted an African Grey but couldn't afford one. I had a Grey and/or other birds for over twenty years. One of many animal hobbies over the years. My wife never liked the birds. Finally I gave in, only after finding just the right home.

We have our resident Oregonite...Oregonoite...Oregonanian...Oregonitian ...Oregano...Oregononian............Oregonian!! (almost as bad as being a Louisianian (my homestate))

Isn’t that (Oregon) somewhere up there close to Canada??

My mom, who grew up on Long Island, NY, thought that once you crossed the Mississippi River, you were in the Rockies. Of course, she also thought Denmark and Scotland shared a border. Close (sorta), but no cigar.

ANYWAYYYY.....sorry, Great Plains person, you don’t exist.

LOL I grew up in Detroit. Windsor Ontario was basically a suburb of Detroit. We crossed the borders back and forth with never an issue. As teens we would head over to Windsor to get drunk. The drinking age in Canada at the time was 18 yo.
We were 16. They never checked our ID.

Also:

- Poor Dorothy isn't in Kansas anymore. Sorry Denny.

- Me.... Iv'e been an OREGONIAN since 1970. Came here at 17 yo to attend college. Never left.

- As kids when we were on a a road trip from our home in Michigan, my sister and I would sing: "I wish, I wish, I wish again..... That we were back in Mi-sh*t-igan. Parents weren't happy.

STJ!

Actually, looking at a maritime map--The Faroe Islands [a self-governing archipelago, part of the Kingdom of Denmark] share a maritime boundary with the UK (north of Scotland) so maybe my mother knew more than we gave her credit for.

Proof (world map maritime boundaries):
Warning--HUGE image 9609 X 3640 pixels--if you want more detail, click on it and scan. It is amazing, to me anyway.

So now you know, among my many other esoteric interests, I LOVE maps.

What an interesting thread this has turned out to be.

BTW, StrykersPerson, I sold my bass boat a while back and have only been fishing maybe twice since then. I guess I should change my name to TNphotographer. Nah, that looks and sounds so weird.
