The German Shepherd, Husky, Chow, and Rottie.

Yup, all because of an unfortunate accident.

Whats worse, is that there will be no grandfathered dogs, all must vacate the province, or have your pet euthanized.

Hopefully the huge outcry from the public will stop this. When will they learn BSL does NOT reduce dog related accidents??

This actually does happen to pitbulls or any bully-type dog in places across the South. Most shelters have policies that restrict adoption of "dangerous dogs", and the reputation of the pittie alone is enough to put them in this category. Often a "pitbull" surrendered or seized is euthanized almost immediately.

Ok... Went and checked out the actual situation. It's Quebec City, not Quebec Provence. I could not find anything about the banning of GDSs, Huskies, Chows or Rotts. That is conjecture based on comments suggesting that perhaps the entire province should follow Ontario's ban

They'd better ban Chihuahuas, as well then, because most of the ones I've encountered have been snarly, snappy brats.

Seriously, BSL is stupid. Requiring licensing and enforcing generic dangerous dog laws does a much better job of preventing bites.

It makes me sad that so many people think it's the dog itself instead of stupid owners. A number of cities around the KC area ban pits. Some even ban Rottweilers too. And there has been a push in two cities that are less than 5 minutes from me to ban GSD's.

Quebec City is the one to initiate the ban with no grandfather clause. Montreal will grandfather those already living there with stricter rules for ownership.
I agree that it is more on the owners and we all know all dogs bite.

I'd like to see a study on severity of bites and fatalities. Bsl in Ontario hasn't affected bite numbers but again is like to see severity.

Any dog can bite, but how many will corner a person unprovoked in heir yard and kill? This is what led to bsl being introduced in Quebec City and there was a bite either the Tuesday before or after this incident in Montreal (if I read the articles properly).

I just finished reading Pitbull: The Battle Over an American Icon by Bronwen Dickey, which covers these topics. A very well-researched book (took 7 years), it details how not only bite statistics are woefully inaccurate, but breed definitions as well, particularly in the case of pit bulls. Since everyone trumpeting BSL uses these two arguments, the book basically proves how wrong a policy it is. A definite "must read", IMO.
