If your dog is overweight you should be able to tell simply by looking at him, although you should consult with your vet if you are concerned ... |

Weight loss progression with Cajun! |
She was 60lbs when we got her at 14 months old. She could only run 1 or 2 laps around the yard before having to lay down and rest! Now, 3 months later, she weighs 53.5lbs. And never stops moving.
When we got her I knew she was overweight, but I didn't realize she was THAT overweight... I never would have guessed she had 7lbs on her to lose.
I've never been able to get good angles that show her weight, especially when she was fat I don't have the greatest pics... but I think you get the point.
Within the first week we got her
And this was yesterday
She's hard to photograph lol.

|JustGran||Jag is 9mths old so still has some growing to do. A couple of weeks ago we switched him from Blackhawk kibble to a raw diet as he was carrying more weight than was healthy for a pup his age. The difference is already noticeable and we couldnt be happier. He still needs to lose a bit to look like a lean dobe, but at least he is on the right track now)|

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about my dog's weight. I have asked the vet multiple times, but he just states that he looks fine. I am always concerned with his joints due to weight.

Whaaaaaaaa ... why am I just now seeing this thread?!?!?!? Glad I did! |
When I first rescued Jasmine, she was underweight. I overcompensated and she gained too much. Bad mommy I took the blinders off, and have been monitoring her diet, and incorporating different methods of play to build lean muscle as well.
Here's some before and afters:
Getting hot hot...
Ding ding ding! I took this picture yesterday with my phone. It's not the best quality, but I think you can still see the difference.

I think my Chee is a bit overweight too. I used to be able to bike with her but not now. We just play ball all the time. |
A lot of people ask me if she is a rottweiler mix When I was biking with her before everyone was saying she had great body.

|Hollyann||I need to post some pictures but my boy is not yet 5 months old and is tipping the scale at 60 pounds. I'm not sure if that's normal, the vet says he's perfectly fine. I've cut him down to eating breakfast and dinner (because he wasn't very interested in lunch) he even looks on the thin side to me. But everyone says he looks fine, feels fine. I'm just so worried about his hips and joints!|

Haha, funny you bumped this now. Chase is in fact overweight, but it's mostly medical. His thyroid crashed and now it's climbing. Another 8-10lbs and he will be fit. |
At his fattest, he was 110lbs, and he is only 27.5 inches. He is now 98lbs.

|Abby||I'm bumping this thread up, you really can't be too aware of a healthy weight for your four legged kids!|

I know this is an old thread but I really like it because I have seen way to many over weight dogs here in Texas. Here are some pictures of my husky she is a low 3 /high two under all her fur. |
This is her and her best friend bella. Bella is very overweight and the owner is working on that!
you can kinda see that she is in good condition in the picture :]
she was playing in water so you can see more here
I just wanted to add this:]

|Abby||I like to think that this thread helped some people when I first posted it, I want to bump it up so it can be seen by people who weren't around then|

Zeus is almost always a low 3! No matter how much or how little I feed, his condition is always right on! Being 31" tall his "right on" is a whopping 95 lbs, as was described, his ribs are easily felt, and when running around outside can be seen. |
That is a poor picture, but he is slightly more robust than usual here, prob ~5 lbs heavier than usual.
Oh and about the fat labs.....Cant stand them!! At the horse farm, we've got 5 labs, 4 rescued English style (I can't stand the people who breed giant needle nosed, almost always fat labs) and 1 working gun dog. All 5 live on the farm, are constantly running around/hunting etc and they each get their daily swims and retrieving games down by the lake (As a lab should be lol)

Abby thanks for the thread. I am always worried about Kyrah's weight. |

|Abby||Thanks to everyone who posted their pictures in this thread! I really hope it'll help people learn to identify healthy weight on their dogs in the future|

|mangujowa||Just took a good look at Niz in the sun (finally, nice weather!) today--his last three ribs are showing when he stands, and all of them are visible when he moves. He's kinda skinny, but our agility instructor (who will make comments on dogs' weights) didn't say anything particular to Niz's weight and just said that he looks good.|
