kmbeach22 My doberman has a specific area in my yard that she goes doo doo in. There's a lot of woods in the backyard, and her area is way back in the woods by a bunch of sticks and logs. Sometimes I use a shovel to clean the area if it gets too nasty, but since it's way back in the woods, sometimes I just leave it.

On the rare occasion that she doos on a walk, I bring plastic poop pickup bags and scoop it up. It's not my favorite thing to do, but it is what it is.

I don't get in there and do a thorough inspection of her poops, but I pay attention if she is having diarrhea and keep an eye out to see if it's consistent or not and/or if she is acting differently or not feeling well.

Rosemary What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc)
At home, I have a pooper scooper. For walks and outings, I use baggies.

Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, desginated spouse, children, third party vendor)
Sigh.... Me.

How often do you pick-up poop? (Daily, weekly, monthly) What is the weight per volume you estimate you remove?
I try to pick it up at least every other day. Never really thought about wpv, but a full pooper scooper sure seems heavy.

Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons?
I wouldn't say that I "inspect" it, but I do take note if someone has very different poops, and keep an eye out to see which one is doing it.

Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used.
Pretty much the whole yard gets used.

What technique or method do you use to prevent lawn damage?
Considering that dogs are trying to dig to China (or else, find some kind of burrowing critter), pee spots in the grass is the least of my worries. Never really worried about it, anyway.

Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of dog waste?
You know, I have absolutely no idea. I just put it in a trashbag, and put it in the garbage can.

NINKOjIN What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc)

I have a bucket and a spade I use to pick stuff up.

Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, designated spouse, children, third-party vendor)

Me at home, my mother when we go out places ('cause she feels bad I'm always doing it at home, lol).

How often do you pick-up poop? (daily, weekly, monthly) What is the weight per volume do you estimate you remove?

Daily if I remember to. Hell if I know the WPV... I just know I get like 5 poops a day, typically.

Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons?

I roll it over sometimes to look for odd things, colored things, etc., that he may have eaten.

Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used?

Whole yard. Typically the fenced area he's allowed in by himself, but if we both go out for a walk in the woods, everywhere is fair game.

What technique or methods do you use to prevent lawn damage?

His poop doesn't seem to be causing any problems, his urine, however, causes the grass to change color. Luckily he only pees in one spot, so it's not a big deal. We've kind of agreed he has "his area" that we don't care about the look of.

Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of the dog waste?

Yeah, but we just dump it in a specific spot of the back woods where it composts itself.

Audrey1 I must be the only one who does this - but I use a disposable poop bag to pick up and I tie a knot, carrying it back home. Then I untie it and drop contents, i.e. poop, into the toilet and flush the poop down the toilet. I then put the soiled but empty bag in the garbage. It just seems nasty to put poop in the garbage and after all, we poop in the toilet and flush it down, so why not my dog's? I do make a point of not picking up sticks and extra leaves or rocks since they would not be easy on the plumbing.

Poop Patrol

What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc) Gloves and bags.

Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, designated spouse, children, third-party vendor) Usually I do the honors, but my daughter is not adverse to clean-up duty!

How often do you pick-up poop? (daily, weekly, monthly) I clean up 'on the spot'!

Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons? I ALWAYS casually inspect everything.

Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used? Hugo is 'guided' to certains areas, I prefer NO pavement, or real or fake grass. I like him to use mulched areas, dirt, gravel, and the like.

What technique or methods do you use to prevent lawn damage? Hugo is NOT supposed to pee or poop on grass.

Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of the dog waste? Don't know...

rsjean What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc) Small shovel and a small plastic bucket - then taken to small metal trash can lined with bag and it has a tight fitting lid.
Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, designated spouse, children, third-party vendor) My wife and I cover it as needed.

How often do you pick-up poop? (daily, weekly, monthly) What is the weight per volume do you estimate you remove?
Daily. Not sure of weight but with 4 dogs it is sizable.

Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons? Yes, for toy parts etc and the urine as well for blood since one of the dogs has Addison's.

Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used? The yard is an acre but the grass is horrible - it can not withstand traffic and turns brown at first pee. So we sub fenced a smaller area that we put down a liner and covered in a few tons of pea gravel to make a kennel area of sorts. Works well and there is never any mud to worry about. However during the hottest part of the summer there can be the slight odor of amonia in the air and I am looking for an inexpensive doodorizer that is available in bulk to wash down the gravel monthly. Any suggestions?

What technique or methods do you use to prevent lawn damage? See above.

Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of the dog waste? Yes, pick up after your pet - but never actually heard of any active enforcement.

DobermanDobbie Even though I love dogs, I can never take cleaning up the poo to be honest with you guys. I ask my cousin to clean it up. I compensate him for every poop cleaned. Lol.

smurfette I'm negligent with poop pick up. So the man of the house ends up doing the task. Typically it's once a week. It can lapse a bit in winter months.. We have a some sort of poop rake and poop holder. Something I found at petsmart. It all goes in a garbage bag placed in a five gallon bucket. The bucket fills atleast once. There has been an increase in poop since the change to canidae food. Thought there would be a decrease. But, maybe they enjoy the food more? They're on a free feeding schedule and within their weight range.

My dobe prefers to poop in the same spot. But if it fills up she would move to another "Sweet spot".. She can't just freely poop anywhere. And doesnt like witnesses

Darkevs Handmade {by a friend} Stainless Steel pooper scooper.

I pick up every other day.

I inspect suspicious poops.

Top Male Stormy likes to poop up on things sometimes, Makes scooping interesting.

Magic poops here and there.

Pearl will poop right beside ya if she feels like it. Not shy at all. SHe usually prefers the long grass areas to deposit her stools!

Don't have to worry about lawn damage, I have way more property than dogs! hahah

I compost and bury the poop.

2 dobes Wish I could find this photo I have of our last dobe....he was great; he allowed me to "catch" his poop in a plastic bag when I was walking him! Yes...he looked embarrassed, and folks always stopped their cars if they saw me to comment!
I liked that - never had to touch it.
Now have 2 dobes, and neither one will let me go near the butt with a rattly bag. They "pinch" right up!
Our girl will poo anywhere...on a walk, on the deck....our boy is very picky, and needs his privacy. Waits till we get home from a walk to go in his own yard, unless camping - then he realizes he is just going to have to go!
DH and I take turns cleaning up the yard, we have a small can in the back....although I am the only one who ever drags the stinky full back out to the curb on garbage day!
And I ALWAYS seem to get "poo hands" when I pick it up while walking them...the bag either has a hole, or it ends up around the top of the bag and I get it all over my hands somehow

sammers26 At my house I am the poop-picker-upper. I use a large pooper scooper because fankly i don't like touching poop. I find with my little guy if I walk around the house at least once every two days I can keep a good handle on it. In the summer how every I do try to do it a bit more. Our baby came home in November and so far we have just had frozen piles. lol

Bubina * What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc)
I put on my rubber gloves, and use an old newspaper page to pick up the poo. When I'll be out for walks, I'll take a plastic bag.

* Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, designated spouse, children, third-party vendor)
I handle all the poo - my sense of smell is terrible, so what would make my fiance gag is totally fine for me.

* How often do you pick-up poop? (daily, weekly, monthly) What is the weight per volume do you estimate you remove?
In the summer, daily for sure. I may be able to get away with 3 times weekly in the winter.

* Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons?
Yes, if it's soft, or if there's any undigested food.

* Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used?
I live in a penthouse with 3 terraces, and he has one terrace as his poo and wee area.

* What technique or methods do you use to prevent lawn damage?
Malta's too hot for lawns!

* Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of the dog waste?
No

2_2Blue I use bags from the grocery store (gets rid of them & reuses them at the same time). Lucky me...I am the pooper picker-upper. I should do it every day & I guess I will have to when I have all 3 dogs, but with just Hooter I pick up 2x a week, usually. Sometimes, when it's rainy, I'll get lazy and do it 1x a week. He uses the whole yard, which is currently undergoing a major overhaul...so it's all dirt. No grass problems, yet. In winter he uses the cement right outside the sliding glass door. He doesn't like getting his feet wet. lol, silly!! Do I inspect the poop? Well, with my (gross) pick up method I have no choice. If anything is unusual I do look to see if I get any clues from the poop.
Our area will fine you for not picking up on walks, but I've never had to deal with that, Hooter doesn't go when he's on walks. But, they do have bags & waste containers at the local park. As for the stuff from the yard , I just toss it in the trash inside the plastic grocery bag. No issues so far!

Jojo [QUOTE=Kratty;72419]I know this is a topic everyone faces, but really have not seen any discussions on this. So in the spirit of being a well rounded forum, I decided to address this topic here.

I think this is a good subject to talk about.
[LIST][*]What is your preferred method of poop pick-up? (pooper scooper, glove and bag, etc)
At home, we use a pooper scooper then deposit into a 5 gallon bucket with tight fitting lid to stop any smell and keep away the flies.

When traveling in the car or motorhome, we use "Dispoz-A-Scoop bags and dump in trash bins. We wouldn't be without them. People not picking up after their dogs is one of the biggest complaints in RV parks.

Dispoz-a-Scoop | Biodegradable Pooper Scooper

[*]Who is the designated pooper picker upper? (You, designated spouse, children, third-party vendor)
At home it's usually me, but sometimes my husband.
When traveling it's whoever walks the dogs picks up

[*]How often do you pick-up poop? (daily, weekly, monthly) What is the weight per volume do you estimate you remove?
Daily or several times a day during spring, summer and fall. 3 times a week in the winter.

With two large dogs, each usually have 2 BMs a day so that's 4 piles a day.

[*]Do you inspect the poop for proper digestion of food or other reasons?
Yes we want to see the consistency of the poop which lets me know how the dogs are going, that is why I like to pickup daily.

[*]Does your dog only use one specific area or is the whole yard used?
The male lab likes pooping & peeing on the grass. The dobie girl goes in the greenbelt or perriwinkle (that is a real treasure hunt)

[*]What technique or methods do you use to prevent lawn damage?
We just live with the dead grass areas. During the summer I may try watering in the urine but in WA we get enough rain to do that in fall and winter.

[*]Do your local ordinances specify specific requirements to dispose of the dog waste?
We put the poop in a 5-gallon plastic bucket with tight fitting lid. Eventually the bucket are taken to our waste transfer station. When I checked many many years ago I was told we aren't suppose to put poop in our weekly trash can.

No. Just a quick look, unless there's a reason to examine further (eg when Zippy swallowed a red balloon)

I would love to say that someone else dose this but I can't I do 99.9% of the scooping at our house, but that also means that i get to make 99.9% of the dog decisions too.

I usually pick up after every trip. We live in one of the only big dog friendly apartment buildings in town so I (even if my neighbors do not) try to keep things clean and smelling good. I don't think that i will ever be able to answer how much as I am NOT going to weigh it lol.

lolonurse I am the only poop picker-upper in the house! I do it about 2-3 times a week, but in winter, our wet season, I try to do it daily - we have 3 "yards", so it is kind of like a not-so-thrilling Easter egg hunt! I use a cute little long-handled dustpan that I buy in a great little Asian knick-knack shop, and a children's size leaf rake (I'm very short!) And, in the spirit of total recycling, so to speak, I put the offerings into the kibble sack their food comes in, after it's been dumped into the food bin. Seems like natural justice.
I think that, now that we are down to 3 Dobermans, the weekly contribution may be anywhere from 8 - 12 pounds. When there were 4, it was probably 10-15. The 3 cats probably leave us another 3 or 4 pounds. Now - if all that were gold... sigh. oh - and no lawn - we have dirt, dust, and really ugly and scrubby plants that just look at any grass we try to grow, and it whithers.

Plastic bags when away (I also check for holes).
Thank goodness hubby scoopes (This is the same person who said," I'm never p/u poop").
We scoop as needed. The yard is a dog yard. My two use the entire yard and I only check when something's going on. I've given up on the lawn. Not sure about local ordinances
