Blackdog Thanks for the kind words, Lexus.

Jennifer, there really isn't anyone in NM I've ever heard of, but LeMils is in Arizona and they breed some very nice dogs http://www.lemils.com/lemils/home2.htm

There's also Pennylane http://www.pennylanedobes.com/ and Toledobes http://www.toledobes.com/ in Nevada.

You can also contact the DPCA's breeder referral person, Irina Sasu @ [email protected]. I think she's in Texas, but she does referrals for the whole country.

Also, be sure to read Mary's buying guide http://members.execulink.com/~korevaar/buyingguide.htm

Probably the best thing to do if you can is go to a few shows and meet some people. Most of these breeders don't advertise and have waiting lists for their pups and don't sell much to folks they don't know so it helps to meet folks that can be a reference for you. Also, if you can, go to a chapter club meeting. There doesn't seem to be a chapter club in NM, but there are a couple in Arizona - http://dpca.org/chap.clubatol.html#AZ

Sometimes you do have to travel a bit to find the right dog for you, so don't get discouraged if you can't find anything close.

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll do what I can to answer them.

brumwolf On the question of how old to judge confirmation there is a pic of Tia in my gallery at just five weeks already the show queen,if you hear of a litter that you like the sound of try to go see them i'm sure that any breeder will stack(that is what we call standing the dog for inspection, not sure if the same term is used in the U.S ) the pups for you to take a look.

animalcraker welcome to the forum. I too am in a similar situation as you. I've been showing my cavalier in the show ring but now I want to finally get a dobe. I'm based in southern callifornia and my name is jennifer too, wierd huh. anyways brumwolf probably gave you the best advice for finding a breeder. which is getting out there and meeting them, since there's only so much an internet site can tell you. The dpca is a really good resource on dobes. I also have a vook thats an excedlent read on dobies, its writen my a doberman breeder. I'll have to get back to you on the name of it though since i'm at school right now, but i'm sure you can find it on amazon. also somewhere on the akc website you can find out what shows (and specialties i think) are comming up in your area. good luck with the breeder search.

skydancer That's It, Chaz!!! thats where I have seen you before, I think LOL. I really like Lexus what a cutie. They are all adorable tho I just can't get enough of the pics. Great to talk to you and I hope we can share more in the future. Have a great day!!!!!

skydancer Great information guys, still reading <G>. Thank you for the welcome frznbuns. I am enjoying the knowledge you are all sharing with me and looking forward to more. I hope that you do get into showing for fun, I have found showing my dog to be great enjoyment but I have also learned you need very thick skin lol.
How often do you bathe your dogs? What products do you find be best for coat conditioning? Can anyone explain the correct degrees of angulation or know where to find that info? Should the head from occiput to tip of nose be the same length as the neck? What do you find to be the best degree of layback on the scapula? What is the best way to judge a prospective pup for conformation and at what age?
If anyone can answer these question or know where to find it I would greatly appreciate any and all input. Thanks in advance, Jenn

skydancer Hey Thank you so much for info and site reccomendation. I am very much a patient person as it's been ten years of research on dobes, looking through some peds, watching the breed ring, and waiting for the right breeder and pup. I am glad to see other people that are interested in showing and trials. I find it fun and exciting. I have been reading about shutzhund and obedience trials and both look like a lot of fun. I did get a chance to talk to a breeder and learned some valueable information.

brumwolf Hi Jennifer and welcome to best source of info for dobes on the web.
I do show confirmation, unfortunately i am based in England so cannot help you much with your breeder database, but what i can tell you is when you do get to a show just watch the dogs that do well not always the one's that, win get their kennel names and check blood lines, that worked for me.
As i said i am not much help because i do not see what U.S. judges are looking for but the above method worked for me, did a lot of miles, went to a lot of show's ,spoke to a lot of people, but it was worth it in the end, in two months time i will be taking part in the biggest dog show on this side of the pond.
Good luck with your search and be patient dont be tempted by the first cuddly pup you see and make sure the breeder gives good backup.

Lexus Hi Jennifer, I was nearly in tears reading your story about Boogieman.... You certainly have chosen an admirable breed. And of course you are welcome here even though you are still searching for your dream dobe.

I can help with some of your questions....

and excellent site to spend some time: http://www.dpca.org/

Diseases : http://www.dpca.org/gendisease.html

Breeders in good standing with the DPCA : http://dpca.org/BreedRef/index_html.htm#Arizona
(none available in NM that are listed with the DPCA, but perhaps you can talk to some of them to find other listings) There are other knowledgeable show people here that may prefer to PM you and assist you with personal knowledge of breeders better than I can. Namely Blackdog, a very experienced with showing and all around good helpful person!

As for the diet, I feed all raw with no supplements, although I am going to be trying Nupro on the recommendation of another member that has had great luck with it, all natural supplement!
Raw thread:https://www.dobermantalk.com/showthread.php?t=235

Nupro:http://www.nuprosupplements.com/dog.htm

Okay... hopefully that is a little help to start out with!!

By the way, I have a two year old Bl/rust female named Lexus! I dont' show confirmation, but am into OB

skydancer I guess the first question would be how many people here show their dogs in conformation? Second question what is the best lines of breeding in your opinions? Third what is the most common disease or illness in dobes? How frequently is VWD seen in this breed? What is the best % of crude protien that should be given? How many of you feed a raw diet? What is the best sup. to enhance coat and condition? Ok I think that is all for now but I have tons more lol. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

skydancer Thank you for your warm welcome and not disguarding me because I do not own a dobe yet. I am finding more and more information as I go along and hope that in the future I will be able to find that special show pup I have been searching for.
I fell in love with dobes about ten years ago working at a human society in TX. An old red male came to us because his owner thought he was rabid. He was around 11 years in age and had obviously been abused by men. He was going deaf and blind, I bonded with him quickly as the others on staff were afraid of him. I walked him daily and played constantly. I came to work one day to find that the manager had ordered him put down because she took him for a walk with her female dobe and her husband. Everyone knew he had issues with men, he had also not be known for getting along with other dogs. I was made to put him down that day or better yet a newbie that had never done euthenasia before in her life was to be trained on my new found buddy. She stuck him over five times and he took it like a trooper. I finally had enough and made her leave the room as I did it myself. I sobbed so hard that day I felt like my heart would come out of my chest. I have harbored his memory all these years and will ever forget that boy. RIP Boogieman, I loved you so.
I have wanted a dobe boy ever since that day because of how he made me feel and the love we shared. I have never felt that with another breed of dog and have been doing research for all these years. I still feel as tho I don't know enough but hopefully someday it will come to me. Trust me when I say you are all so lucky to have your babies. I have done two rescues since Boogieman and loved them both. They were also males and I bonded to them quickly as well, I am so happy they have found the perfect homes and couldn't be prouder of my efforts for the breed. Bringing a dobe back from the dead is no small feat.
Again thank you all for your welcome and I plan to visit here each day to learn something new and exciting about the breed.
Smile it in increases your face value!!

Hi my name is Jennifer and I live in NM this is my first time here. I am wanting to find more information and people to talk to about dobes. I love the breed and have done two rescues but have yet to find my dream baby. I show a Mini schnauzer AKC conformation and am finding this breed community to be a little out there as far as attitude and helpfullness. I have written to a few Dobe breeders and received no responses. I am looking for a conformation male in the future but want to fill myself with knowledge before I go that road. I was raised around large breeds and animals you wouldn't believe, yet I cannot find anyone to simply answer a few questions and direct me to a show breeder that I can talk to about the conformation of dobes. I have worked in vet clinics, rescue groups, and a human society. I am full of useless info about animals in general, most of it dogs. I have been a dog fan since I think about age 3 but who really knows lol.
Each time I go to a dog show I watch the dobes in the ring and am always awwwwed by them. They have beautiful lines and float when they move. The grace and elegance is stunning.
So there you have it lol. I am a dobe nut with no dobe lol. Hope you all have a great day and I am enjoying this site.
Jennifer
