Knowing her, she is probably starting many smug and unwarranted arguments about how fast she is on 3 legs. Then stealing all the toys to destuff them.

MeadowCat I'm very sorry. OS sucks - such an awful way to lose a dog. Been there.

If she lived another 20 years, it would've never been enough. She made each day a blast. Can't imagine any other breed in my life.

ECIN It's been a bit but I always think about her.

modm My condolences on the loss of your beloved Penelope.

I can tell she was very well cared for and loved.

Mel said "Her joy shows through in your pictures." - That was what I saw as well- she brought a smile to my face.
The photo of her in the middle of what appears to be the stuffing's of a softy and a huge smile.

I like all the pics you have posted of Penelope but especially the one in your signature. That's the look of love and one of the toughest things we miss when they are gone.

Your next dog will be so lucky to have you in their life.
Aw thanks. I knew it was a terminal diagnosis and splurged on a home photo session. Specifically requested none together because I always look tired and the photographer, rightfully, took a few candids anyway. Pen died two weeks after that and I am so grateful for those shots.

I'm so sorry for your loss. They leave a big hole when they go but when the time is right you will honour her with another lovey.
I'm sorry for your loss. It's an awful, unforgiving cancer.

We had a lovely 120 days and, then, a few quiet ones and a very sleepy, weak day that let me know it was time. She really never told when enough was enough (eating, playing, muzzle-punching to the end) but, as you say, it was my last gift to set her free from that body.

Her huge "lookin' at Mum" eyes have earned us some lovely fanart over the years! This one of her in her Halloween costume is a fave.

Hope you'll keep the good memories of her forever.

The spirit in her eyes really came through in the pictures you posted.
I went back and reread all you threads to get her history and timeline straight.
It's ashamed you only had a brief 2-years with her after adoption.

Thank you so much loving Penelope in her last two years while under your care, even though she became ill with progressive cancer.
I'm glad you weren't disparaged with Dobermans from your first experience and are considering getting another Dobe in future, when the time is right.
Thank you. It felt like we had always been together.

The osteosarcoma was a big shock. I knew, as a BYB dog, she would have health issues down the line but was sure it would be DCM. Had her echo done at a show and was planning to track that every 6 months then holter.

Her timing was "good" in that she was diagnosed a week into my summer break. I got a temp job at the vet who did her amputation and the oncologist was in the same city I was assigned a clinical rotation. We really were as aggressive as we could be but both vets and I are sure she had some awful genetics at play. Sent some postmortem tissue samples to Yale in hopes they could put that towards their ongoing OSA vaccine trial.

Pen taught me a lot about what it means to be a mindful handler and a future doc. I want to honour that with my next dog when the time is right.

Penelope

You made everyday a song, Pen.

You, who had a rough start and lived in a kitchen. You, who helped me work hard. You, who loved me the moment we met. You, who always did her best. You, the Goblin Queen.

Thank you. Miss you, kiddo.
