Gretchen_Red I feed Purina Proplan Sport but my dogs are both younger.

I add a bit of raw sometimes, Kefir, sardines twice a week, eggs twice a week... I don't add broccoli and I highly suggest not adding peas or soy beans, both aren't good for males.

geek_kitteh Since I have a range in ages in my pack, I feed Diamond naturals all life stages chicken and rice. He gets green beans here and there too. So with working in the vet field, most pet food companies are making food the way humans think pets should eat and the aafco safety label is kinda moot. The vets I work with recommend proplan and brands that are "tried and true". I think diamond has been great for my pups, my rat terrier was on it almost all her life and she lived till 16 and dobie pup has a great coat and has a nice amount of weight on him. My only complaint is the gas he gets in the last month or so.

steris56 Seconding Pro Plan. The line has several options (we were always partial to Sensitive Systems), is widely available, meets WSAVA guidelines, and is sensibly priced. You shouldn't need supplementation with any food of this quality although fun, healthy treats like blue berries, a small bit of egg, broccoli, etc aren't harmful.

On a tighter budget, Purina ONE is quite decent.

MeadowCat I feed Proplan. I personally like feeding a food that meets WSAVA guidelines and has a huge team of veterinarians and nutritionists formulating their foods, does extensive feeding trials, and has a long track record of providing good nutrition. Both of my dogs do very well on Proplan and I know a lot of Dobermans that do, too.

I don't really believe in supplementing (in terms of commercial supplements). If your food is properly formulated, your dog doesn't need supplements. My dogs only get fish oil/vitamin E, given per my vet's instructions. They do get some additional things thrown in their food, not every day, and not because it's "needed"...an egg, some cottage cheese, a little fruit, some tripe, yogurt...depends on what food I have and if I feel like sharing. None of it is because their food is lacking in nutrients, but because they like it and it gives them a little variety and enjoyment. I do split a tin of sardines (in water) between the two of them probably three times a week.

Dog food

Hi everyone ,I'm new to this forum ,just purchased a 5 month old doberman puppy a week ago and the breeder has him on Diamond Naturals dog food . Food is really nice on the wallet so I dont mind that however I do want to give my pupp a good quality food ,something that will help him excell, in his energy, health ,coat ,etc... I have been doing a ton of research on this topic and boy it's so overwhelming. Are any of you familiar with Diamond naturals ? And if so what do you think ? I was thinking of switching him to Dr. Tim's ,its a bit more expensive but if its worth his health I'm ok with that , I'm also thinking of adding raw egg ,broccoli, peas and carrots and some supplements....any feed back on the food ? Please comment let me know what you guys think and what your routine is like
Thank you so much
Victor
