Oh yeah.....and in that area, who knows who you could get to work on the thing....I think the workers would almost have to live there while they were fixing it up. And the shipping. I mean the whole COUNTY only has about 2,000 people. And the property has been for sale for almost 2 years!! Just those old family ties...Daddy was so full stories of various ancestors and their doings. I was so young, though....I have no idea who was who and how they were related. My sister is older and is keeper of the family genealogy ![]() And we're quite settled here (in Colorado for almost 35 years now) and have needs they couldn't meet. It is a pretty house though, isn't it? Love the woodwork and trim inside---in the more presentable areas. But did you see that thing that looks like it might be a bathroom (apparently the only one in the house, mind you)? My dad grew up with an outhouse. I remember the house we used to visit (similar age, down the road) had a sort of bathroom tacked onto an outer wall that was referred to as new (back in the 1960's). So who knows when the one in the picture was added---septic tank, I'm sure, and in that rocky soil. UGH... And that bedroom with the weird walls and strangish ceiling. The paneled exercise room. Not quite built to the same standard. Those may be add-ons too. About being built right on the ground though; I can see latticework on the left of the porch front side of house, so at least part of it might be above ground. Probably built on solid rock too, if I remember how scruffy the farm fields were around. LOL All that exterior wood to keep painted. I remember the old store with holes in the floor, and seeing the ground a few feet below when I looked through the holes. At that price, it's probably still original floors even now. ![]() Looks like a money hole for sure. Oh well. |

ECIN | Mel - I went back and looked that house over better - Boy I don't know , I did not see any vents in any of the floors for heat , A/C - Seen one gas heater built into the wall - and if you look at the outside - you will see what looks like a 40 gallon LP tank - I seen NO A/C outside either . The I noticed the wires going into the house - I bet that house has only a 100 amp service in it and wonder when there was any updates on wiring . I also bet that house is sitting on rocks = no foundation - notice how low the house sits by the grass = I seen no blocks . Tin roof looks like it was put over the old shingles or what ever - it don't appear to lay right + that tin is old ! They did not use full sheets from top to bottom - they made work with what they had - I guess - Thinking about - for only 219 . 2800 hundred feet + a 3,000 store??? I'm thinking there is some major work that needs to be done - how knows - go look at it - you may get it for 175 - 185 ! But it may cost a 100 grand to fix it like you want it . |

Groups like PETA are well known, but the Humane Society of the United States are working to do a lot of damage, too, and there are a lot of other groups out there doing a lot of damage to farmers, to pet owners, to hunters.... it makes me furious. |

And now, of course, I see all the stories about how hard it is to make any kind of living as a farmer on the kinds of farm my great-grandparents had....it makes me sad that it's no longer possible to live that kind of life, or at least to do it easily. I have a few friends that farm (more Dobe people!) and it's so hard to hear how difficult it is - a dairy farmer, a cattle farmer - it's just really rough, with the increasing (false) messaging out there that somehow it's "healthier" to be vegetarian, that farming is bad for the environment...all of that. I have nothing against vegetarians, but there is a lot of misleading information out there that simply is not correct. We need farms, badly. We especially need farms that rotate crops, and we need animals that help fertilize the soil. But don't get me started - I get myself really worked up! Anyway, on the kitty topic...yes! The bathroom was likely added on a bit later because I know my dad pretty much grew up with an outhouse. |

melbrod | Oh, and MC---we drank the unpasteurized milk, but my grandfather, when he died at 84, had evidence of old infections of tuberculosis in his lungs (that's not what killed him), which could come from unpasteurized milk back in the days when they didn't check their cows for it. We all had to be tested, I remember. (Again, I was young and just vaguely remember the testing--a pinpricky thing on my arm which was supposed to swell if I'd picked up the germ). We were all clear, but....I guess it's just as well you didn't get to drink the fresh milk. |

Papa (grandfather) had a farm in the mountains of VA--Highland County. I think we're related to everyone in that county, because the area was settled in the 1750's, more or less, and the same folks have been there ever since. But my dad's brother's kids got the farmland. Dad went off to school, got a master's in Chemistry and worked for EXXON as a chemical engineer, which meant we grew up in Louisiana. Fond memories though--farming a bit primitive, maybe a generation behind, but running around it was so interesting for me, a suburban kid. My dad grew up there in the 30's, and between that childhood and the old farm, I could see where my father's ability to make everything from practically nothing--a handsaw, hammer, a few bits of wood and some wire--came from. |

For a while, we had this really great little co-op in town, and they carried grass-fed milk from a local dairy. I'm not a big milk drinker (though I LOVE other dairy products!), but my husband LOVES milk. We'd get that milk in glass jugs, and there was this great cream seal on the top that you shook into the milk. He said you could always taste a difference in the different seasons, because the cows were eating different things. He loved that milk so much. The co-op closed, though and we can't get it anymore ![]() |

And even is SP gets a talking equidae, I doubt what he tells the judge would be considered acceptable evidence. - loved chocolate milk though As soon as spring comes, cows that stayed in the barn all winter...got to feed on fresh grass. - over the cold months, it was all bailed hay, and grain & corn mix So the 100% change in cow spring diet, overnight...within a week, the store milk tasted & smelled a bit like "rancid milk, fresh grass and weeds thrown in". - could literally smell what the cows started to eat, and resembled the grossness of a cow pie - few weeks later, the milk odor started to decrease / as cows diet, normalized No SD & 10 others here - Beau don't know what COW ASS, smells or taste like !! - I needed to say that, to defuse the later beatings LOL |

TN - Know you wipe that dang smile off your face - Your a bad boy for laughing ! ![]() Story time ! When Kadin was a pup - the first fall here - it was getting into fall and woolly worms were everywhere - he had that puppy curiosity going on and would be smelling them - taking hid paw and moving them around . One day I had let him out under supervision and watched him go after one - I told him to leave it alone ! And walked over to him , which was a bad idea as you all know - they will grab there new prize and take off ! Well he did and ate it ! Then in seconds he was gaging and drooling very heavily . Wife was hitting the panic button - to tell the truth - I was a little worried too , So made a call to the vets office and told the gal what had happened - she was laughing and said Kadin will be fine , The things that make a wooly worm wooly stuck to Kadin's tongue and the insides of his mouth - that was what was making him drool , said it might take hours before he quits ! He finally got over his encounter with the wooly , lol BTW The vet gal said they had got boats loads of call the same day about other dogs and woolies ![]() Today - he will still check one out walking across the patio , but that's it - he hasn't forgot ![]() |

I deskunked the outside of her, but there was nothing I could do for the inside, and she was miserable for at least a week. I was miserable, too, because she sleeps on the bed, and she kept exhaling skunk smell and drooling skunky puddles on the blankets. I was kinda hoping THAT would teach her not to chase skunks, but I have no doubt she'll eventually forget and need to chase another one. I just hope she keeps her mouth closed! |

K, let's see if we can get a picture of Horus up here... Sorry it's tiny, SP. I took this a couple days before the blizzard. Horus and his friends Helen and Little John had all conspired to knock down the pasture gate and they were roaming the property for a couple days until we got the gate fixed. The picture is him standing in front of our garage, keeping out of the wind. ![]() I have some nice action pictures of him on my other computer if I can gather the courage to go down there (it's freezing in the basement) to post them for you one of these days. |

It COULD mean someone has a nice open place they let their chickens roam around in (like our 15 acre plot), but what it PROBABLY means is that the chickens are all milling around loose in a closed building with only one or two square feet of floor space per bird. And "pasture raised" doesn't mean happy chickens running around free in a pretty green pasture, although technically it could. What it does mean is that the chickens have to have at least 10 minutes of access to the outside in each 24 hour period. TEN minutes. They open the door for 10 minutes, but most of those chickens, being confined in the building the rest of their 23 hours and 50 minutes a day, would be afraid to go out, so they don't. But when you buy chicken that says it was pasture raised, you get a warm fuzzy feeling about pretty chickens playing in the sun in a green meadow. Don't you? ![]() To be honest, a truly pasture raised chicken is tough as rubber, because they run around a LOT. When we butcher some of our extra roosters, I LOVE the meat because it actually has a nice intense chicken flavor, but I can't just roast it or fry it. It has to be stewed, slow cooked for 24 hours or boiled to death. I usually throw the pieces in a pot with onions, celery, and some seasonings and boil it all day, then pull the meat off the bones, and use that along with the strained stock (VOODOO SOUP) to make Annoying Rooster Pot Pie. ![]() Quote:
