pamlocke We used freshly ground flax seed with our girl for a long time. Helped her a lot.

brw1982 DES was safe and effective for my girl who battled CHF before dying of DCM. Her cardiologist is the one who put her on DES. She won't put a DCM dog on Proin.

My other girl took Proin for a while, but their cardiologist switched her when she found out. So, Proin worked IME but its not preferred by the cardiologist my dogs see.

Fortunately, DES worked very well for both of my girls.

ETA...One of my girls became incontinent around 3-yrs of age. The other girl didn't become incontinent until 8 yrs of age.

Meldrew79 I used Vet Classics Canine Incontinence tablets and Vet Classics Cranberry Comfort Powder with Brandy (you can find them both on Amazon). They seemed to work well. Anytime she went off them, the leaking started up again.

Saskdobie We took in a rescue dobie Kascha aged approximately 6 years and found that she had issues. She's been on Stilbesterol for approximately 7 years now, once per week. The vet cautioned us when we put her on it that it could have long term effects on her kidneys but she's obviously had a full lifespan.

Fitzmar Dobermans I've used Proin too with good results. Had one bitch on it for about 6 years with no issues. I've tried DES, but it didn't work long term.

melbrod DES is an alternative to Proin. It's a prescription med too. We've used both; I can't remember which worked better though.

dobebug I don't have the issue because I only have males (although I know of a couple of ancient male Dobes who were put on Proin because of leaking--it worked for them but I have friends with bitches.

Prion has worked for many bitches with what gets called "spay incontinence" (but occurs in intact bitches too so spaying isn't always the cause). For some it doesn't work and the other solution is DES (a hormone control) Talk to your vet about it--it is usually ordered from one of the many compounding pharmacies (Wedgewood, Roadrunner etc).

With either DES or Proin often after the initial loading dose the amount given to control the leaking can be reduced and as Cressrb explained can then raised if necessary.

There are other holistic treatment which seem to work briefly but aren't as continuously effective as DES or Prion.

Cressrb My 7 yr old has been on Proin for 2 yrs now. Like you, I wanted to avoid Proin if possible and I tried every holistic, natural method out there. Nothing worked.
I have found in my own situation that after her taking the Proin for nearly a year, that I could cut back on the dosage with no ill effects.
Instead of 2x a day, she is now on 1x a day dosage. If I see any leakage, I will go back to original dose.

dobegal Yes I have had girls with spay incontinence. We used Proin. One girl only took it a couple of times a year the other girl was on it daily one pill a day. Good luck

Incontinence Issues

My 6 year old Dobie is having incontinence issues. It started when she was 3 - they called it spay incontinence. She just leaks on occasion when she's just sitting on the furniture or sleeping. Otherwise, she's fully housebroken. The vet prescribed her Proin and she was extremely hyper on that. I went to a holistic vet to get alternative help and she was given Suo Qwan Wan. That helped and eventually I winged her off it and she had no issues until recently. I put her back on the Suo Qwan wan and it helped for a while and now it seems to have stopped working. Has anyone else had this issue? What you have tried that works?
