melbrod HDD hasn't had a decent walk for 2 days, BUT almost 60 tomorrow, dropping to mid 50's Sunday before another snow event () Sunday night on into Monday.

So I should be able to get out and do something with him--if I can find a non-muddy place to walk.

4x4bike ped So we have quite a few odd names here in the Pacific NW. Puyallup and Sequim have already been mentioned.
Back in the 70's, I was taking some geography classes form our local state university. One class was on the "Geography of the Pacific NW". It was being taught by a visiting professor from Britain.

In any case. Portland sits at the confluence of two rivers: The mighty Columbia and The Willamette, which is pronounced will-AM-it.

The proffessor started off his course discussing these two rivers and their significance to local human civilization, both the indigenous people and the westward migrating settlers.

He continually pronounced the Willamette "willa-MET, just as it is spelled. He finally figured our due to the hems and haws amid polite coughs that he was mispronouncing our local river!

He took the correction very well.

One of my favorites is Spokane WA, which is pronounce spoh-CAN.

Natchitoches
, (Nack-a-tish) the original French colony in Louisiana, is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase.

https://www.natchitoches.com/

I never knew how to pronounce that one, always thought it sounded like Nacogdoches, TX, which is pronounced like it looks, except for the "g"- (NAK-ə-DOH-chis)

Yeah, I'm here too--man I should have tossed Sequim out there--almost no one that didn't live in the PNW could pronounce that one.

My knowledge on trucks is pretty limited..... I had girl children that never warmed up to the idea of playing with trucks much even though I tried. ;-)
I make a pretty good pasta (doesn't have to be mac) and sharp white cheddar but my two favorites are a potato and sour cream and sharp white chaddar (it's actually called Funeral Potatoes (grin) and came in a can of the the WSU sharp white cheddar. The other one is a potato, onion, sour cream and sharp white cheddar (and I put some celery in it too) soup. That one is a hand written number from a friend of a friend--Bernie Rosenfeld.

I also like a good stinky soft cheese and while I like brie the one I really, really like on crackers is camember (I probably spelled that wrong too--I'm on a roll with spelling lately). It's even stinkier than brie.

TNfisher I'm currently reading Assassin's Fate, which is book 3 of the Fitz & The Fool trilogy and sadly, the last in the entire long series...so I'm taking my time with it because I don't want it to end LOL. What a journey it's been so far and our Fitz is now 60! And in this final book, Robin Hobb is really tying everything together: some of the previous characters reappear, and other previous characters and places get mention. Dragons, elderlings, liveships, the pirate isles, it's all there and I'm less than 20% into the book.
How do these authors keep all of the details together like that? Heck, I have enough problems remembering what I drove to Kroger for
If any of you have any more recommendations like this, please let me know!

The article actually has that right--and I have that straight from the Indian friend of my stepfather.

But since the Lushootseed's are in fairly short supply and if you say Pew-awl-up to a Washingtonian they'll laugh and call you a foreigner.

So if you are trying to pass as a native you'll get by with Pew-allop.

I could drop some of the other derived from local indian place names--I'd try but I can't spell most of them. Even something as straight forward as Snohomish stops people in their tracks.

Come to think of it Seattle is another one that is regularly mispronounced. And Spokane (Spo-can) and I know some guys who were born and raised in Spokane who told me they regularly got in knock down drag out fights with kids from visiting sports teams who regularly called it Spo-cane.

But then when I first moved to Southern California there were a number of hispanic names that foiled me every time.

So solly Chollie--so very wrong. See prior post--it's Pew-allop (like gallop but drop the g)

I've never figured out why non-Washingtonians try to start it off as if it was Pi or Pie. It's really Pew as in "pew, that stinks..."

Everyone tries to make it much more complicated than it really is.

TNfisher Big relief, I passed my Microsoft MD-100 exam today. I've taken quite a few certification exams and this was the hardest one I've ever taken. And to make it worse, Microsoft is in the process of changing the exam (making it harder) so we didn't get our results at the end of the test...we had to wait and log into our accounts later to see if we passed or not. When I walked out of the testing room, I was sure I had failed it. Looks like I made a few good guesses, eh? LOL Now on to the MD-101 and hopefully, this will be the last certification I'll have to get before I hang it up and call it a day.
