|Meldrew79||That's a good question, ECIN! Thankfully in this case I knew where the hide was. If it was a trial, I would have liked to think I would have waited him out a little bit. It's hard though when you have trial nerves and I may have called it when he leaped at it multiple times. Depending on the judge, they may have given it to us. The hide was very sourceable for Newts though, meaning there was really no reason he couldn't get his nose right on it!|

Question for the trainer ! |
When looking at the set of pictures - top to bottom - Newtie had me sold it was also on the ribbon ! So Oh Great Trainer ! Did you just take a second to see what Newtie did ? As NOT to be to quick at calling find ? This must come from experience !
Great job - Next time - MAKE a video would have been so cool to watch him do his deal !

Thought I'd share a fun sequence of photos from class on Friday. This is an elevated hide, it's the red tin on the back seat. Once Newton caught scent he was convinced it was on the spinning mobile they had hanging from the bar and he was jumping at it like a pogo stick! He worked the problem out and realized that it was actually a little easier to get to! Super fun to watch him work it out and pretty funny too! I loved how motivated he was to get to source! |
We finally got into an NW3 trial in MN at the end of July. Really looking forward to it. We only need one more for our Elite!

I think my dogs are pretty unfazed both because I do a lot when they are puppies to get them used to people wearing weird stuff and because here in Minnesota we wear a lot of stuff on our face in the winter - scarves and balaclavas because it's so cold! So I think it's just normal to them that sometimes they can't see our faces

|ECIN||MC , Had you worked with Sypha with Before - you went to the Nose work ? At home ? I never gave it a thought till the other day when a guy gave me a pretty cool mask and I was showing the little lady . Anything else I never thought of ? Sorry to ask you these questions on the nose work tread.|

For the Nosework trial, this is a local place that hosted it, so it's people we know, yes. It's not the place I train, though.

Great job Sypha and to her trainer - MC - you bring up a good point with the mask - I put mine on the other day and Mr. B did like it at all - I wonder if he really knew it was me , he was on guard for sure- Had to take it off - will try that one again to get him use to it . |
So , was this the same group you have always worked with ? Close to home ?

Sypha and I did some Nosework this morning. We played K9 ABC Games and competed at the Dual Odor Games level. Sypha found all 6 hides in under 5 minutes to earn her Dual Odor Games title! |
The K9 ABC Games are a fun (and challenging) Nosework search. It's a continuous, contiguous search that is both indoor and outdoor, and contains all four search elements in one search - interior, exterior, container and vehicle. In the dual odor level there are six hides, one in each element plus two "wild cards" that can be in any element. You have 8 minutes to search. (That's a LONG search, for those that don't do Nosework!).
I was VERY pleased with Sypha's search today. She worked beautifully. It was the first time we've done searching with me in a mask. The trial was staged very safely with distancing and run so that it was really safe, and very efficient. We were only there about 90 minutes.
Here's the girlie with her ribbon!

City girl with a lousy sense of direction here. I don't hike. |
I really only use a GoPro when doing nosework or tracking, where I need to be able to see the dog, so I always use a chest harness on myself. I know other people who prefer to use a head mount for their GoPro, again for noseowrk or tracking.

Yeah, we are going hiking in October and Hoss always trails with us. |
I have a tactical vest for him that he typically wears with a harness hook.
A a go pro will attach to this vest if I wanted ......and then there is getting something similar to your setup.
Which angle would you prefer for video If you were hiking ....at your chest like you do now or from at mount @ dogs shoulder?
Curious as to what you would opt for .....

Love the videos and enthusiasm shown by both you and your pack doing the nosework! |
Are you using a phone or a Go-Pro camera to document training?
What happened to your sprained ankle- healed? Back in May you had really done a number on it...
I ask this only because in videos, your legs and ankles look fit as a fiddle!

Way to go team Rosemary. |
Question...not ready to return to indoor nosework classes yet.
So when you do outdoor searches how long do you let it “bake” before you do your searches.

Lily is to cute ! Love how she lays down and looks back at you Rosemary , Poor Leo , he had lots of things to check out , but still did very well - Thanks for the videos ! |

Challenges in nosework training..... |
My son decided to come outside while Lily was working, and I had to keep an eye on him, which of course distracts me from the dog...
For Leo's search, the neighbors across the street came home.
In case anyone is wondering, there was clove on the water meter cover, cypress alongside the curb, anise next to the bushes, and myrrh alongside the house.

Last brag for the circuit season. Elite trail at Stokesdale NC Friday 13th, I wanted to let Dax off leash as much as possible to help gain the confidence that I needed. When we trailed at the NW3 level I had no problem letting Dax search off leash however with the large search areas at the Elite level I lost some of that confidence. At the Stokesdale trail I gain the confidence back. One of the search areas was an arena and their had been animals in there prior who had pissed. Dax went in and was easily distracted I hooked her up and she was able to refocus. One the judges noted on our score sheet great job hooking her back up. Well it is easy for me to do that with Dax because she is tall and I am short so we have an advantage. |
We earned a third place ribbon out of 28 dogs with two pronounced out of four searches. Need to work on inaccessible hides, handler error in not called two of those type of scent puzzles. One complicated scent puzzle was in an open to the elements, wind blowing, inaccessible under table and within 2 feet around the corner in the brick wall the 2nd hide. Called Alert on the brick hide and Dax was working that table however handler did not call.
Hopefully we will continue this Nose Work journey in the fall
We ended the season doing exactly what I wanted to do, increase our finds and gain the confidence in working large areas off leash
