|Beaumont67|| CF - so very sorry Athena has gone to heaven...hope heart ache will turn to cherished memories, in due time. |
When you didn't want her to die alone in the hospital, I could really relate.
- I told our former Amy, "don't die in your sleep girly"...family needed to share goodbyes & kisses
- she had 3-4 strokes, after midnight beside me (in bed), hung on till morning Vet home visit & final drive to clinic
- I whispered this message to her, every night for 4 months straight / and she never failed to amaze us

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Even though we know it was the right thing to do, it doesnít take away the emptiness in my heart. |
Athena was my very first dog, she was such a naughty **** as a puppy....destructive, mouthy and dominate but we worked through it together and she blossomed into the most beautiful soul. Everyone loved her and she was such a great example of the breed. Loving and loyal until the end. She was only 8 and we feel robbed that we didnít get more time with her.
My other dogs seem to be handling it well. Rizzo was behaved pretty bad for the first couple days, but I assume that was due to the fact that my husband and I were mentally, physically and emotionally drained. Iím sure she sensed th eweakness and was trying to take advantage of it. At obedience class she was awful and the longer it went on the more upset I got, I realized what was happening and we took a real so I could clear my head and when we came back she was a bit better. Sheís just a baby and needs me to be strong and emotionally stable.
Sully has been a bit more needy than usual, but heís a super needy dog and very attuned to my feelings. He doesnít seem sad or even that heís looking for her. Athena was always alpha dog in the house but when she got sick we slowly started to see him take over, when Rizzo would be obnoxious to Athena he would get in the middle and put a stop to it or redirect Rizzo to play with him. Sully has never really liked puppies, but heís really stepped up and become much more tolerant of her since Athena has passed. Our house will never be the same, but overtime weíll all adjust to the new normal.

Goodbye Athena. You are gone but not forgotten. You will live in many peoples lives forever.
They are never with us long enough. Yet, they are always with us.
Best to you and your other pups.

We had to lay Athena to rest this weekend, I came home from work to find bloody diarrhea all over the house. Called her neuro who told me to take her to the ER. They ran some blood work and said her red blood cell count was in the 20ís should be in the 50ís and it was 6 weeks ago. They said it was indicative of a GI bleed most likely bleeding ulcer or bleeding in her intestines, caused from the high doses of steroids. It was life threatening and we would have needed to hospitalize her for treatment and stop treating her for meningitis, until it was resolved, if it was resolved. She wasnít responding as well as we had hoped to the treatments for meningitis and the chance of her recovering from it was slim at this point, add the GI bleed on top of the nerve injury to her leg it didnít look good for a long term good outcome. My poor girl was suffering, she had labored breathing and wasnít even responsive to us when we were comforting her, it was like she didnít even know we were there. Part of me wanted to give it one more go, but I couldnít ask her to keep fighting for me. I didnít want her to die alone in the hospital. She passed by my side, I told her what a good girl she was, how much she was loved and thanked her for everything she taught me about living in the moment and unconditional love, kissed her on the nose and said goodbye.
Run free sweet girl, Iíll carry you in my heart forever.
