This is a great thread for reference for anyone who is interested in purchasing a quality ecollar. I ended up buying a basic Tri-Tronic model and am happy with it so far. Even though I fully intended on just having him wear it for a few days before using it, I still turned it on just in case I needed it on our off-leash walk. I did end up needing to use it and it really did its job! I feel more secure having this collar on him because its like an invisible extra-long lead that I can use to correct him when I can't reach him. I think it will be a very valuable tool in proofing Red's off-leash selective hearing, and make my walks with him much more relaxing ![]() Thanks to all who gave advice and experience in this thread - I'm sure many people will be able to benefit from it. ![]() |

I like Dogtra....because you are able fine tune the exact level needed. Tri-Tonic clicks from each level, which maybe to low or too much. |

I'm definitely not a professional trainer!! Once she thoroughly understands the recall command and is 99.9% consistent with it in line with your expectations (many, many repetitions and practices lol), then you can introduce the ecollar for proofing and reinforcing the command. The ecollar stimulation then replaces the leash, and because she already understands the connection between the command and the consequence, she should transition into that pretty smoothly as long as your timing is on the ball. Keep up the good work! ![]() |

I have a Dogtra 200NCP. My trainer told me about it when I was having some serious problems with him when he was younger. The thing I like best about my collar is that it has a "page" function. Now that is just about all I have to use if I need to get his attention. He wears it herding and any time I am doing off leash training or walking (I feel it is better to be safe than sorry, if he blows me off and we are in a park or near a road or in a potential dangerous situation I want to have something that will get his attention rather than having something bad happen). So while he did have to get zapped a lot in the beginning, now all I have to use is the pager function, it vibrates it like a normal pager would do and I have his full attention with no zap. Definitely don't let them be come collar wise, Khiera gives very good advice on how to keep that from happening. I did not do that when Kai was young and am doing it now with a dummy collar and a plain collar (without the box) put on the same way I would put on the ecollar. |

doberkim | My suggestion is that if someone needs to learn how to use an electronic collar, they find a reputable trainer in their area and learn from someone who can show them how to use it the right way - as with any tool that has the power to do harm, you need to make sure your timing is correct to use this correction. |

I call my ecollar Dante's "best friend" and everytime i whip it out he's happy and wagging his nub. |

I like and have the Tri-Tronics Sport Basic G3. It's adjustable shock is perfect and you can use it for up to 3 dogs. Works perfect! Scoob |

I have the dogtra 3500 ncp super-X collar. Large-Dog Dogtra Training Collars I echo the sentiment about not letting the dog get collar wise. You can buy a dummy collar for him to wear around the house and yard for like $15. |

I would suggest to "perfect" her recall on leash/on a long line as much as possible before moving on to an ecollar. Unless you are a professional trainer with tons of experience (and most of us aren't), it's tricky and challenging to TRAIN a recall on an ecollar at any phase. The ecollar should be used to PROOF and REINFORCE the recall command once you are 110% sure that Rainah completely understands the command and your expectations of her when given that command (eg. drop everything she's doing and come to you right away). When Rainah is consistently (i'll say roughly 99.9% of the time) responding to your recall command on a leash or long line, then you can begin to use the ecollar to proof and reinforce that command off-leash. As for avoiding being collar smart, when you start using the ecollar, put it on and take it off her multiple times in a day for about two weeks or so without using it. Switch it around with multiple collars, have it on by itself or on with another or several collars while going on your regular activities, so that the ecollar itself does not represent anything out of the norm for her. I call my ecollar Dante's "best friend" and everytime i whip it out he's happy and wagging his nub. As for how to train with/use an ecollar, there are different approaches and it's easily a subject that fills up a book or a two hour video. I would suggest working with a professional, experienced trainer on that unless you have access to other excellent resources to self-train. If you want you can PM me for my experience on how i did it. Just my two cents worth. |

Ok I am also thinking about getting an ecollar for Rainah. She is just over 6 months and we are doing TONS of training with her (going into her advanced obedience course in a few weeks) but I would love to be able to go on walks in the woods with her and not have to worry about her running away and ignoring me. Also, we are moving this saturday into a new house with a great back yard that isn't fenced in yet (we are doing that next spring) and i want to be able to play fetch with her back there and not worry about her taking off.... Do you think an ecollar would work for these purposes, while we still work on perfecting her recall? And How do I go about using the ecollar so she doesnt get 'collar smart'? Do I call her to come back and if she ignores buzz her right away?? Thoughts? |

To my way of thinking a tone would just contribute to getting collar wise. The only time I've ever used the collar without a command is around my horses, here God just makes a rule that you don't mess with the horses. Same with fence running when the horses are in the field next to the dog yard, God just speaks! No warning, just zappo. You choose that behavior which you know is trouble, you choose a zap. You will never know if God has a zap handy, or not, and it's not worth the risk. Also agreed on the other tips to not make Mr. Red collar smart. Kylie adores her e collar and will leap in joy when it comes out and stretch her neck for it to be put on. I've put it on and given special treats. I put it on before giving a special toy, or her dinner, or whatever. Every single time she wears it out, she knows we're going someplace to have Big Fun. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, is you can use the tone as a "clicker," just substitute that sound as a marker. I use that during formal training sessions and she responds well to it. My voice is my primary cue/reward to her, but the tone can be a nice adjunct in that way. |

Jess - I have the same model as Carol - the TriTronics Sport Basic G3. Mercury swims in it all the time (and he's a good swimmer so the collar is completely submerged). The part I also really like about the TriTronics G3 is that the receiver is much smaller compared to many other brands. The electrodes are also VERY tiny and barely stick out at all and don't rub hair off the neck like other brands (Mercury also tried out a Innotek bark collar but we discontinued its use due to unreliability). |

We have the Innotek Model GS-4500, made for Cabella's, which is also where we got it. It is a very well made collar, rechargeable and has A LOT of different settings. When we were looking into the collars our trainer, that taught us how to use it, recommended this one. I have no complaints about it, we use it sparingly, and it works well. I've zapped myself on every setting, and I know how high I am willing to go, both on me and the dog! Just make sure to put it on Red often, and for fun stuff like eating, playing, etc, so he doesn't get collar smart. And I know it should go without saying, but never leave any training collar of any kind on a dog that is unattended. |

KieferstahlDobermann | Try Dogtra. It's what we use on our police and Ring dogs. It's got the widest range of correction stimulation and it's a lifetime warranty (even if YOU broke it, they send you a new one) waterproof smash proof and ect. We're really happy with them. |

Tri-Tronics Sportsmen G-3 This is the model we have. Tri-tronics G3 SPORT BASIC Collar with FREE Holster Burns, if you are going to use it for Recall....you have to make it an "act of God" the first time you hit him. it WILL work. You know how Petey is....a bit more intense then your sweetie Red, :p it took only a couple of hits for him to give me 100% recall since, even in the face of crazy distractions, Fawns, Deer, Bears, Dirt bikes, Mt. Bikes and then just the common ones like people and other dogs. I only used the collar from March until June, and now I haven't put it on since. I don't think that it is recommended to stop using it that soon, but for us it is working out just fine. I'm sure that I will need it for the future. I am enjoying Petey's improved hearing, it has made our woods time pure pleasure, the constant worry of running him off lead it gone. Carol ox |

Rosamburg | I use the dogtra 1500 and have been very happy with the results. That said, some people I know have had trouble out of the gate with their collars. Because of this I would be a bit reluctant to buy through ebay and would rather spend a few extra bucks and get one from a reputable distributor. I got mine from Ralph Gilby at Dogsport gear. It didn't hurt that I was able to go to his store in Surrey, BC, Canada. He also has a distributorship in the states. That way if there is a problem he will take care of it immediately. |
