Actually you got some good responses in there. As Reddobes mentioned, prostate disease is very common in, dobermans seem to suffer from it more than most breeds. It's also EXTREMELY difficult to treat. Neutering eliminates that risk.

voodoolizard Sorry im really confused here, i ask a simple question about the benefits of neutering as to keeping an unaltered male and get blasted from all sides as to not breading him , where i thought i said i had decided not to !!!!! all i asked was even with out breading was neutering a good idea but got not a lot of help!!

2gooddobes As someone who has 4 rescued dogs, 2 being Dobes i would suggest really thinking about breeding. There are so many dogs in rescue and i wish more people would consider it before buying from a breeder. Granted i also believe that rescuing is not for everyone, there are alot of unknowns in rescuing and for some people buying a puppy from a reputable breeder who can show you the parents and their tempermant is a better option. In my opinion the breeding should be left to the professionals who follow a strict program.

Murreydobe Just to give my experience-I prefer living with neutered males. After the neuter they're just like they always were with one difference..they're not thinking about girls all the time.

and the reasons you were considering breeding him are?

think about just how many dobes are sitting in shelters, rescues, humane societies that were also good boys & who do not have homes through no fault of their own but ended up homeless because someone thought it was a fine idea to breed their good boy or good girl.

ask some of the people who have bred dogs because it was a good idea--or they thought it was and found themselves with puppies & no homes in sight at 10 weeks or four months.

since the dog you were considering breeding is a male who were you planning on breeding him to?

and he's only a year? he's hardly old enough to have even a preliminary ofa rating on his hips. do you know his vWD status. the rest of the health screening that you see us recommending generally gets done after 2 & many tests should be repeated yearly (CERF, thyroid panels, liver & kidney blood screens, cardiac echo, cardiac holter).

i know, voodoolizard, that you are going to think i'm insane--it's only one litter you are talking about. but the fact is that the akc says that the vast majority of the dogs registered each year are the product of these one time litters--that means that's where most of the excess dogs without homes come from.

i don't breed my champions (two of them are sleeping behind me)--these are dogs who have competed in the conformation ring, in the agility ring, the obedience ring, the rally ring--they have the titles to prove it--they've passed their temperament evaluation and also have the ROM title. but in each case there was another champion in their litter who was bred & frankly since the blood lime & genes are out their my dogs don't need to be adding to the overpopulation in dobermans.

do the breed a favor voodoolizard, neuter your good boy, there are some reasons to do so--testicular cancer being one, chronic prostate problems being another--& when you are ready for another dog there will be dozens of all ages for you to save from a likely death sentence in one of the shelters.

KCFilley Hi,

I agree with reddobes.

Although it's so tempting to have "just that one litter" perhaps it's best to let the conscientious good breeders do that. Let them mess with all the research, health testing, cropping, late night worries, messy clean ups, etc.

Any way, welcome to this forum. Please give us pics.

reddobes I would recommend neutering him. Intact males get benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). This can lead to secondary problems such as infection or cysts in the prostate. Neutering can also reduce testosterone driven aggression, roaming, etc.

I would not recommend breeding you dog unless you have done all the recommended health testing (www.dpca.org) and he is titled in some way (Conformation, ring sports, obedience, agility). There are just too many unwanted dobes in rescue as it is.
