New member with Dobe puppy from France

Hi all

my name is Claire and I live in France. I've wanted a Dobermann since I was about 10 years old (which brings us over 30 years back...). Weirdly enough I got invested in the French Ring dogsports crowd and got a Belgian Malinois instead. After a few years of training/competing with working bloodlines I turned to show lines and started breeding. I had ten years (1996-2006) of highly successful breeding show Malinois.

Now after a 5 year break (during which I've had my daughter but no more dogs), we just weclomed a Dobe puppy in the family ! He comes from a well reputed French breeder who has a lot of success in both showing and working their dogs.

Regulation prohibits cropped ears in France, but his tail has been docked. He's a big black male puppy and has settled very well in the family.

Yesterday during the visit to the vet to get some shots he was diagnosed with class 2 murmur. The murmur didn't exist a month ago when the previous vet checked the puppy over. I'm of course concerned about how this will unravel and came to the board to get further information and share with other owners.

I'm also an avid photographer who loves to capture moments between the kid and dog.
Thanks for your time and looking forward to getting to know you all.

have you contacted your breeder about the murmur? that would be step 1, in my mind.

Thx all for the replies.
I have emailed the breeder, of course. Have had no answer yet, but it's the week-end and she might have been showing her dogs' butts off

Regarding the Malinois, I bred very successful show lines, and the temperament is just not there. My little girl is 4 yrs old, I'd never trust a Mal with a young child. Actually I'd never fully trust any dog with a kid, but the Dobe seemed less prone to be hype and fearful like many show Belgians are. I've spent ten wonderful years breeding, showing and selling gorgeous Mals all over the world, but the buyers' support was growing really old after telling people what to do with their pups for 10 years. The Malinois is a very high maintenance breed, temperament and training wise, I just grew tired of it.
This Dobe pup has been with us a week only and he's already settled in beautifully. He seems much calmer, more secure and quieter than any Malinois his age. I'm not pooping the Mal, they are incredible dogs, but with a family, full time job and house to care for, I don't have the time and personal investment necessary to raise a Malinois. Plus, there was NO way I'd have a double-coated breed in my home ever, again, lol.

Love the way they're already great friends...

By the way he's linebred on Nitro del Rio Blanco, and his sire Cisko Nitro of Devil Inside is a good working dog, so we might try to tackle some bite work if his health permits...

Hi and welcome to DT.

My boy was born with Grade 1/2 murmur. They thought he might outgrow it but he didn't. I had it diagnosed by a Cardiologidst when he was 11 months old. The only way to know for sure what it is is to have a Ultrasound exam done by a Cardiologist, but at this point I'd wait to see if it goes away on it's own first.

Good luck with your boy.

Thank you, that's exactly what we plan on doing. We'll get the DNA swabs to test him for DMC as well... Fingers crossed !
