Question Need Advice

Hi! I am new here and need advice. I currently own a 14 year old corgi/beagle mix. We were told by the vet that she has about 1 to 1 1/2 years good years left. I have two children, 9 and 6, that love this dog more than life itself. I wanted to get another dog before she goes down hill, not to replace her but, to get the kids adjusted to having another friend before she starts going down.

I want a bigger dog in the house because my husband works away often and the kids and I are often at home alone. He came to me the other night with the option of a doberman. While I have always loved the breed, I will admit I have not researched the breed enough.

We live in a house in the middle of a small city. I have a backyard that the dog could run around in, but not enough space where the dog to roam for hours on end. I am a teacher, so during school months I work from 6:45 in the morning until 4 or 5 at night. My husband works a typical 8 to 5 job. We do travel, but have a camper, so the dog would be able to come with us on most of our trips.

I wanted advice form owners as to if this would be the correct decision for us and, if we do get a doberman, how to best get our dog adjusted to our lifestyle and family.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to DT! Only you will really know if this is the right breed for your family. If you spend time reading this site you should learn a lot though. Have you been around dobes much? Maybe you and your family would be interested in volunteering with a doberman rescue group to get acquainted with the breed.

I don't think a Doberman puppy is for you with the hours you work as Doberman puppies are time intensive.
However, an older rescue might be right up your alley. There are many well deserving dobermans in rescues everywhere. A reputable rescue will find the perfect dog for your lifestyle.

Do some reading on the forum and see if you think a doberman is right for you and your family.
