uumm...

Well all, I've been MIA on here since last week. It's because my dad had a sudden and fatal heart attack, tonight was the veiwing and tomarrow is the funeral.
I will be on maybe later this week to get my mind off of things, for now I'll continue to be MIA and some how stay focused on school....not sure how well I'll do this semsester......anyway I don't mean to be a downer but I felt I needed to say something.

Make sure you look at what you at and inform the breeder (when you find the right one) of what exactly you want you dog for. You stated "we currently do not have plans for agility, shows, schutzhund, etc." there for it would be wise to stay away from dobes with high energy and high work drive. A great breeder (we aren't looking for just good breeders anymore) will be able to fit the perfect pup to you. They will also have health guarantees in the lines such as: low incidences of cancers, DCM (which they now have a genetic test for one of the genes that cause this), Wobblers (which they are doing research to find the gene currently), Eyes are checked & clear, VWD clear, PennHIP checks ( I personally prefer over OFA becuase it is more actuate), OFA's done on hips and elbow joints, and Thyroid tested. A great breeder will also be willing to give you a pedigree of the lines behind the pups and will be willing to tell you what the dogs died of and what age (if they know).

For any of my breeding dogs, I have had, if one of the genetic tests come back negative or the dog is affected I get them fixed. Those are not traits I want passed on. My dog may be tainted but I refuse to taint future lines and the breed itself.

If you don't care about the dogs lines then don't get the dog from a breeder. There are so many loving dobes, even pups, in rescues and shelters that have mystery lines with great temperaments. It is also the job of the shelters to fit the right home to the dog. Always remember, dogs are far more forgiving than people. They can be run through hell and still turn around and lick the face of their abuser. That is one reason I would trust a dog over people any day.

Welcome, and happy hunting.

thank you all

I do really appriciate the words of sympathy. I am staying strong for my mother and kids (hubby is very good at helping me with that). His (my dad) spirit is with me often and I do not feel seperated from him when he is near. In fact when he is around his presence comforts me and I literally feel like he is still here with the family and I feel no greif. When he visits the other memembers of our family or I go to school (not today cuz the funeral was yesterday and I don't think I could make it through alone) is when it is tough for me.
I will try to stay in touch and active on here, though it will probably won't be everyday like it was before. Thank you all again for the support and kind words. Truely, I do appriciate it. ((((((hugs))))))

Welcome from Missouri!!
My boy is now 6 months old, and we searched and searched for over a year and a half before purchasing him.
The forum members here bring up very good and VERY IMPORTANT points! First of all, they do no testing. RUN!
Secondly, "superior sized"? RUN! It reminds me of the breeders who breed albinos and use the marketing tactic of "rare and unique". If the dog is superior sized, it is not in breed standard. NO GO.
$2500 for a dog with testing is high, especially for a pet! much less $2500 and no testing done??
Make sure that whoever you purchase from has worked to at least get some sort of title on their dogs... a SCH3?? not the easiest to come by... not that they would know if they don't even compete in Schutzhund!
And they may state that they are going to give you a replacement dog, after they make you jump through a bunch of hoops to prove that the defects were really their own fault... but after the dog has bonded with you for the first quarter of his life at 3 years old, not only will it be hard for him or but also very hard for the family. I, like you, have a little one who is 5, nearly 6. If anything ever happened to Prinz he would be completely devastated, as would we... and what kind of replacement would they give you? another sick dog because its from the same breeding lines, who you would then have to invest more time in training alllll over again, not to mention vet visits.
I hope that some of this is helpful. You will soon see (if you haven't already noticed) that a lot of forum members are very outspoken, but it's all really for the betterment of breed and owner. It's never meant to offend anyone. Everyone here really does try to help in not only your but your dogs best interest, and it's a beautiful thing.
Again, I hope that this is useful information for you to think about. I was in your shoes only a few months ago, and am SOOO content now with the boy I have. : )

I just wanted to say how much this thread (and several others on this forum) have helped me. I am new to this forum, and we are in the same boat: looking for a family pet (posted all our "wants" on my introduction post a several days ago), and in the Northern VA area. As a result, we narrowly avoided a disaster with one in VA (Trinity Dobes) and I believe we will avoid another (located in PA, there are several questions raised about them). I have sent emails inquiring into puppy availability for several of the ones listed on the DPCA breeders list, and am hoping for responses soon. Guess we'll have to wait, but we would far rather do that then fall in love with a pup that ends up with all sorts of health issues. I am definitely learning much from all these posts, and have been extremely impressed with everyone's advice and assistance. Many thanks!
