My 1st Doberman - Dexter

Hello all - This is definatly the best Doberman forum i have found and am proud to be a member. I am waiting to get my pup. I have to wait until he is 12 weeks before I can bring him home. I met the breeders and they seem very nice. This is actually the 1st litter. My biggest concern right now is the ear cropping. The dogs ears wont be cropped until october 23rd so I have time to change my mind. So far I have told the breeder that I want the medium crop. Here are pictures of the Father, Mother and of course Dexter. I am uncertain which size crop will fit his head best, also I am considering not cropping at all. My breeder had there dogs cropped by the vet they are taking them too and said she is very experiences. Its costing me $200.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Welcome to the forum, jessedee

As far as ear cropping goes, most good breeders will have the puppies cropped, healed, and ready to be posted before going to their new home around 10-12 weeks old. This saves the owner from having to deal with the immediate aftercare of freshly cropped ears, which can be daunting to most people.

Most experienced vets who crop Doberman ears will be able to tell what will be the best crop to suit your dog's head. The vet should have a lot of experience with Doberman crops specifically, and not just cropping in general since each breed has a different style of crop. Most Dobes are suited well with a medium to show crop. Short pet crops usually do not flatter a Doberman head and will detract from its overall appearance.

The breeder should be able to show you how to properly post the ears once the stitches are out and the edges are healed. There are also a lot of posting threads floating around DT too, with photos and techniques: https://www.dobermantalk.com/dt-educa...g-posting.html.

Ears will generally need to be posted until after teething (around 6 months of age on average), so make sure you are willing to put in the time and effort to keep posting til the ears are standing. Depending on the style of crop and the dog's ear leather, sometimes you will be done sooner than 6 months, though some people have to post for up to a year. My dog's ears were done at 7 months.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hope you caught up on your sleep, having a puppy around is so much joy, and a lot of work. Hello, puppy teeth lol.

Perhaps I missed it, I'm interested in the breeding. Who's the sire and dam? Who's the breeder?

Well after much research and reading ont his forum I have decided not to crop the ears. We have 3 children, 2, 10 and 13, we also have a Beagle and a cat. I just want to bring him home and let him get in the mix with everyone so he adapts better. Also I dont know the cropper personally, it was going to be doen through the breeder and I would feel terible if anythign went wrong. I guess since i was ont he fence I might as well go with the non-crop.

Hi Jessedee,

First I like to congratuled you with Dexter.
Well you decited that you not let the ears cropped, but you have to consider that hanging ears somethimes most be taped in also while the pup is changing his teeth. You only need tape and no surgery

Good luck with Dexter.

Hello and welcome

You are extremely close to me. If you need any help just shout.

What breeder are you using? The breeders that I know of here have their puppies cropped and it really isn't an option. So I'm really curious as to who your breeder is.

If you change your mind about cropping, the only vet I would recommend is Dr Leigh McBride in Wildwood. She is well worth the drive from what I have been told.

Good luck to you

The ears of the dobermann needs to be flat near the head when they are not cropped, but while there are changing teeth, it can be that the ears rise up a little bit from the head because the body needs bonemarrow (that know the exact word in English) to grow and that can have its effect on the ears.

I hope that you understand me, it's school english.

He is AKC, sorry I am unfamiliar with the breeder lingo, the ladies name is Van.essa Perez, it's the very 1st litter for they're girl. They offered the crop for $200, they said I have to wait until the 12th week and they would get the dog ears done for me.

I'm sure you are very excited about getting your puppy, but are you sure you want to get one from there?

Have you at the very least asked about any health testing done on the parents? From looking at their ad I would assume they have not done any. Please read thru this site on reputable breeders before you make a mistake.
