Hello - New here

Hi all, New here from Northern IL. Interested in adding a Doberman to my family. Starting to do some research on the Doberman (European) in preparation to finding the right puppy next year. Looking to learn from all of you.

And from Portland (the left hand one, in Oregon) and why a European Doberman?

Here's some unsolicited advice. If you've never had a Dobe before (ask here, we often know good breeders all over the country) it's probably a better idea to get a puppy from a good , reputable breeder more or less local to you.

Good breeders can give you incredible amounts of help while you are raising your first Dobe. Harder to do that if you seeking a puppy from another country on another continent.

And unfortunately one of the gimmicks that is being used extensively among the less than wonderful breeders is the "European is better"--generally this isn't necessarily true. And definitely much harder to verify if you are in this country and trying to find a good breeder in another country for your very first Dobe.

Good luck.

Hi Spoon! and welcome another Portlander.

Yeah... So what dobebug said^^^^^. If you are new to the breed (or haven't been around them for a while) it would be a mistake to limit your search to a "European" Doberman puppy. There is a reasonable chance that much of what you may have been led to believe contains misinformation. IMO. the "European vs. American" debate is controversial at best and simply b.s. at worst.

With very specific and valid exceptions, I'm pretty sure that the Dobe of your dreams is more than likely going to be found at a reputable and recommended breeder of American show lines.

With good research and some assistance (DT is a good place to start!), the only other thing that you need is patience to find a nice Dobe. OH... That a dedicated fund! LOL.

Best to you in your search
