Talking Hello from Thornton, CO

Hello,

Phil, here. New to the forum. My wife, Hope, and I live in Thornton, CO. We have a 10 week-old female European Doberman. Her name is Heidi. She's a little tiny, but we think the world of her.

We've had her for just over 2 weeks. Heidi had her ears done this morning. So, it's been kind of a rough day for her. Though, she is definitely perking right back up.

I've provided a couple photos of Heidi. One from yesterday before her procedure and one from today.

Thanks for providing what seems to be a great place to talk about our dogs!

Oh, we have another dog, Dex. He's a 1-1/2 year-old GSD/Heeler mix. He might not be a Doberman, but we love him to death. He's a great dog.

Welcome to DT.

Are her ears completely wrapped? That's really not recommended, as it can cause infections.

Welcome--I'm in Colorado too. Your little girl is precious.

And I second what Rosemary said--there should be no tape running across any cut area. You'll need to remove that as soon as possible--it may hurt her a little to peel it off--use mineral oil on the tape away from the edge (NOT over the cut area) to help you get it off. But her ears will heal much better with it gone, and there won't be nearly the risk of her getting an infection (which hurts too) with the sutures exposed to the air.

Here's a few hints about aftercare--the first part is about finding a vet to do your cropping--that's already done, I know--but you can skip down to the do's and don't's for the stage you're at now:

I'd love to see pictures of your heeler/shepherd mix. Here's mine--meet Hairy:

He's pretty decent himself

precious girl another recommendation not to have the ears taped up, you always need to let the ears breath with stiches and you do not posted if there are scabs. Let the ears completely heal first

Hi DobeRX! and welcome from the Pacific NW.

What a handsome girl. How exciting.

So... Yeah, what others said about the tape. I'll also ad one other thing. Many folks, myself included feel the use of the Elizabethan collar post ear surgery is overkill, causing more problems than they serve.

The pup may scratch a bit, as post-op ears tend to itch a bit at first. If Heidi insists on scratching her ears incessantly, you can put little booties on socks on her feet so her sharp little claws don't catchh in the stitches.

In any case... Nice to have you here. And how nice that you posted photos of your adorable girl right off. LOL!
