Hello from Idaho!

Hello! I found this site while searching for ear posting information online, and I am SO glad I did! We have 2 doberman, Hammer, our girl, who turned 6 last June (where did the time go?!), and a new to us puppy, Mace, our baby boy, who is now 4 months old. We found him from irresponsible owners who couldn't care for him, and added him to our family. We have had him for 2 weeks today, and he has been in and out of the vet with issues.

It's been a rough road, and I am excited to get him more settled and a part of our family! We didn't crop Ham's ears when she was a baby, so we have never posted ears before, and after reading for hours on the forums here-you guys are awesome!, I feel like the vet isn't doing a great job either. SO!

We are diving in with posting ourselves now that his ears are healed up, using backer rod and J&J zonas tape. Excuse the wrap job in the pictures, it was done by our vet- Mace came to us with really infected and not cared for ears that were cropped late, and we have been working to get him healed, and we will see how it goes with posting. Great to be a part of this community! We have adored having Hammer, she's literally the best dog I have ever owned!

Hoping the embedded pictures work!

Hi! Welcome to DT from Colorado!

And no, as you can see, your pictures didn't work.

Did you use Flickr? If you did, copy over the BB code--that should work for you.

Generally it is easiest to use an online photohost like Flickr or imgur to post here. We have a tutorial showing how to use flickr here--

THX for adopting a pup in need. Stick around and join in the fun.

Yay! It worked!

Looks like you live out in the nowhere?

We almost lived in Idaho once--the ex had been offered a job at a nuclear facility out there. But the job site was something like a 45 minute drive outside of Idaho Falls, and he couldn't face that drive every day.

So we ended up in Colorado--which has its share of "nowhere" too. I love the open spaces and rolling plains. Looks like your pupper does too.

Yes! We are pretty rural here, we are about 5 minutes from the Snake River Canyon. Our dog LOVES going on walks and hikes around here. She (and now he) has about an acre of fenced in backyard that she patrols throughout the day. Little mr Mace has LOVED getting to run around and just live his best puppy life in the backyard with kids home from school everyday.

Hi Ivey! And welcome from the Pacific NW.

So now you are a 2 Dobe fam... Congratulations!

Where do you live in Idaho? I love Idaho. I have spent a lot of time in your gorgeous state. We have a small cabin (shack? LOL) in Montana just over the Idaho border near West Yellowstone.

Keep updating.

Cute pictures! Thanks for sharing.
I thought I recognized the Snake River Canyon.
I lived in Jerome, Id for 6 yrs. My brother is in T. Falls and a sister
in Buhl and really the rest of my family. I didn't realize how many
until I started in typing....
There is a Doberman breeder in Twin that I have met. Did you get your puppy from her?
He sure is cute!

We didn't get him from her, no- he was out in Rupert and the people who had him couldn't take care of him, and we have wanted a baby for a while, so we took him on. He is much more stubborn than our girl, so that has been interesting. And we had forgotten all the baby fun that comes with puppies! But he has done so well, sleeps through the night in his crate without any accidents, and has gotten very reliable going to the door to go out when he needs to go to the bathroom. We do have a dog door, but haven't trained him to use it yet, but that will come.

Welcome!

I'm glad he found his way to you.

The photos of the ears aren't great, but based on what I see of the shape of the ear, and what you say about them being cropped late, etc...they don't look like ears that are going to stand well. I'm sorry to say that, but I don't really see a great outcome with the ears. I'm not honestly sure what I'd do at this point. I certainly wouldn't continue to have the vet post them. If you wanted to seek out a reputable cropping vet, you could do so, but, I don't know how you feel about that.

Maybe you'd like to try to get a better photo of the ears for us to see - straight on, unposted, up close so we can see the shape of the crop?

Either way, he's certainly in a good situation and loved and that's what matters. I'd love to hear more about both dogs! Do you have pictures of your girl to share? Sounds like they have a good life out there!

Love the pictures ! AND what pretty country you live in !!

There are some very good treads on here about Posting ears - Greenie , MC or Mel - where does she find them at ? I think that may help much more than a Vet trying to do it .

Either way, he's certainly in a good situation and loved and that's what matters. I'd love to hear more about both dogs! Do you have pictures of your girl to share? Sounds like they have a good life out there!
Yeah- I have my doubts about them standing, we will see. I did wrap them after his bath today for the first time using the backer rod method and it was super easy and stayed on really well. I didn't get a good picture of his ears while they were drying, but I will try to next time I repost them. It looks like a medium crop to me, but I am far from the expert with cropped ears. He did a great job sitting and letting me post them, which was a surprise to us all!

And yeah, I will post some pictures I took today while we were all outside playing in the backyard. I posted several of our girl, Hammer in the original post. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old and she is a joy.

Here are some pictures from yesterday-

Right after his bath, Mace getting lots of scratches, and Hammer sniffing him as well

Mace rolling and playing outside while the whole family was in the backyard

Wrestling with his boy

Hammer is not impressed with Mace, or the geese wandering the yard (we have two goslings my husband decided we need- we have never had anything but dogs and cats, and yet here we are)

Look at how much he has grown in 2 1/2 weeks!! The first picture is the day after we got him March 26th- look at his poor little ribs! The second was him napping 2 days ago- he is gaining weight and I think he looks longer too! Slow down, little baby!!!

This is one of my absolute favorite pictures of Hammer- she and I went for a walk down the canyon trail, and this is Shoshone Falls in the background.

I dunno--from what I can see of his crop and judging by his age (just barely entering teething?), I think you ought to be able to make some real progress with those ears, now that it looks like they are getting posted properly.

But that baby stage is heading out the window, I'm afraid, so get your pictures of the little boy while you can. He'll be a teen before you know it. Just remember his brain won't show up before he's two or so.

Maybe I was confusing a picture of your older dog with a picture of the puppy when I was looking at the shape of the ear...

If you want to take a new picture of him straight on with the ears untaped it would definitely be helpful for us to see and to guide you on posting

Will do after his bath today! Yeah, Hammer has uncut ears, we got her from an 'unplanned' breeding that I randomly found on facebook, and at the time, we didn't know much about the breed other than they were great dogs. She's 6 years old now, and our kids second momma (though they have grown enough she primarily keeps an eye on them more than mothers them like she used to). She is just the best dog, in my opinion, so when we found little Mace, and he really needed a home, we jumped to get another

He has been a VERY different dog (no surprise there) than she was as a pup, still as intelligent, but he is way more stubborn in training. Good thing he is so sweet!

Ok! Long awaited ear pictures. So these are the best I could get, he didn't want to sit up, he was too sleepy.

What do you guys think? He is not quite 19 weeks old.
