I forgot--welcome from Portland (Oregon, so it's the left hand Portland in the Pacific Northwest).
I get puppies from showline breeders so they almost all came with registered names--some even came with call names. When they only came with registered names I didn't even think about a 'call' name until they had been with me for several days to several weeks--eventually a name came to me that was a direct result of getting to know the puppy.
I do the same thing with cats (and they are all reclaimed strays or from rescues, dog pounds and rejects from former owners) One of my cats went through 6 or 7 call names before we finally settled on a name that seemed to belong to him.
And one of my Dobermans call name is 'Toad'--that used to really attract the judges attention when he was in Obedience trials doing recalls and he got called--'TOAD COME!"
He came with that one--I don't think I would have given him such a nickname but he was six months old when he came to me complete with both registered (Foxfire's Gold Toed Monster) and call names.
