Hello everyone. I am a new member. I live in Cyprus and i have a Doberman puppy 6 1/2 months old. I bought the puppy from the breeder when he was 3 months old. The breeder told me that he has been breeding Dobermans for 30 years and that he got his first Dobermans from Israel. I cannot figure out which line is my Doberman. American or European? I was hoping that you can give me your opinion. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to DT from Utah! If I am remembering right 'Iceman', a poster here in the past was from Cyprus. He had fabulous Dobermans and I miss hearing from him and the pictures he shared with the group. What is your puppy's name and registered name and dam and sire. Others here might be able to help you figure it out from that information. We all love photos! I hope we hear more from you.

Welcme from Portland, Oregon (that's the one on the left coast of the USA.

I remember Iceman too--and have wondered what happened to him..I loved is posts.

Just by way of a guess I'd say that it would be more likely that your puppy is probably from European (east or west) lines than from American (USA), Canadian or South American lines.

But if you provided us with the registered name of the puppy, his sire and dam's registered name's and it should say on his paperwork what registry he's from which would be a big clue.

I know a lot more about the American dogs but I know that the breeders in Isreal have used both east German lines and I know that a couple of Australian breeders have sold Dobermans to folks living in Israel. (No wonder you can't figure out what lines he's from--too many choices.

It's really hard to figure anything out when there is no background to even make a guess at size. And if you want an evaluation of conformation if you stack your puppy up (four square) and have someone take a picture with the sun on him and behind the camera with the photographer taking the picture aimed at the dogs shoulder that gives the best chance at making an evaluation from a picture.

Also if you can measure his height from ground to top of shoulder and weigh him that would be helpful too.

Why didn't the breeder give you a pedigree or register him before you got him?

Thanks for your answer. Yes you are right, the picture isn't the best to judge. His height is around 65 cm at shoulder. The breeder isn't professional. He owns Dobies for 35 years and actually he has a farm with various animals. He told me that if somebody needs a dog with pedigree, he has to let him know before the birth. The price of the puppy would be also 5 times more expensive so people rarely need dogs with pedigree he said. His dogs were imported from Israel and arengood in health generally (14 years old life expectancy). Is the only thing i know. As for pictures i am not a specialist, but i will see what i can do!

He looks purebred to me, just not well bred. He's likely a mixture of whatever pet quality lines are in that general area of the world, he looks a fair bit like the pet dobes I've seen in Africa and the middle East in pictures at least, and even some poorly bred european dogs, including one well known BYB in France.

He is cute though, as long as you are enjoying him and loving him that's what matters most.

Don't know what happened to an earlier post but here's what I had to say--again...
I translated the 65 cm to inches and it's just over 25-1/2 inches. That would be very small for an adult male Doberman on practically all of the standards.

AKC is 26-28 inches for males--25-1/2 is regarded as perfect size for a bitch.

Can't tell much more than that from the pictures.

Thank you all for your reply. The most important i think is the character of the puppy and i think he is great. His character is exactly how a Doberman should be (from what i've read). I believe that when he will become 3 years old will be clear what line of Doberman is. Maybe it's to soon to judge now. By the way i feed him only dry food Taste of the Wild which i think if very good especially for Dobermans.
