My name is Isenia I have always wanted a pup but waited until I had some land. We just moved onto a farm so now is the time--I finally have enough space for a pup! I do not have my doberman just yet. I am very excited, but also a little nervous because I know it is going to be a challenge! It has been a long time since I have had a puppy.

I will be getting my doberman here soon (a little too soon in my opinion). His name is Rocco and he is 5 weeks old, we are getting him next week. Any advice for a first time puppy owner would be welcomed!

Hi! Welcome to DT!

I'm concerned though...it sounds like you will be getting your puppy when he is 6 weeks old? Is there a reason you will be getting him so young? Six weeks is WAY too early. A puppy needs to stay with his mother and especially his siblings until he is at least 8 weeks old. Yes, he will be weaned well before that age, but that time together with his sibs and mom is important to his social and emotional development.

You might want to read through this article:
https://healthypets.mercola.com/site...as-adults.aspx

In fact, in many states it is illegal to sell or transfer a puppy until he is 8 weeks old.

Congratulations on your new pup!

Still... I will second Melbrod's concern. Your puppy should stay with his mom and sibs until at least 8 weeks. It's really important and perhaps something that you should bring up with his breeder. Me? I am a nervous Nelly. I picked my last boy up at 10 weeks old.

Where in Washington?

Congrats on your new puppy! It does seem a little soon to be taking him home, I would wait at least until he is 8 weeks if at all possible.

Congrats on the new one but I have to agree with everyone else, six weeks is too early to be leaving mom and siblings.

If a breeder is sending puppies home this early, I agree, run far away! This is a breeder who is cutting corners to make more profit! A good breeder puts the well being of the puppies first.

Hi again isenia.

Please don't disappear because you received some criticism with regard to the age your breeder is uniting you with your new puppy.

The comments were valid. Spot on, in fact. Unless absolutely necessary, pups need to remain with their mother and siblings for a definite period of time. They need that time to develop mentally, socially and physically before being separated.

In the event that you do get your pup early, please come back. Pretty much every question that you have as a first time Dobe puppy owner can either be answered here or at the very least, you can be directed to a source that will help you.

Best to you
John

Hello Isenia,

Welcome from OK.

I agree with the advice you have been given.

And, 4x4, meant everything he said. Someone, on this site will be able to point you in the right direction.

You are safe "from" me. No one is going to point you in my direction for advice!

Best Wishes with your new pup! I am jealous.

Go with your gut feeling.

Wait it out!

It's been, I think, over 4 years since my last Dobe. I received him at 10+ weeks? Got him before the cusp of the ear crop deadline.

He was a rescue puppy from a Doberman rescue group and lived 14 years.

I have no idea what your living style is and I don't know you, but have you ever considered joining a foster group.

Just putting that on the wind.

No I’m not running away at all! To be quite honest I couldn’t figure out how to see the replies until now! I had a misunderstanding with his age and he is actually 8 weeks as of yesterday and we are picking him up tomorrow. Which is a relief.

Why did you take him so young, after your own concern and our concerns about his age? He looks younger than 8 weeks. Did you get registration papers?

He is a little smaller than his siblings. Unfortunately Mom wasn’t caring to feed him after about 4 weeks so he was bottle fed. He’s doing great adjusting so far! Better than I was expecting. He has been crying occasionally, but stops as soon as I pick him up. I’m guessing it’s just being away from his litter?

Cute puppy! He’s also a bit fragile looking. Pleeeeease get him to the vet ASAP and have him fully checked out!! He is very likely to have worms and may need nutritional support.

What did you name him? I know you are wanting to comfort him with the big changes in his life, but you can get into a lot of trouble by picking him up every time he cries. Here’s a good routine you can just keep repeating:

1) Pick him up love on him BEFORE he starts to look around, feel lost, and cry
2) Then put him on the floor and do some fun playing with baby puppy toys for 5-10 minutes
3) IMMEDIATELY take him outside to potty
4) Bring him back in and pop him in his crate with a treat to have downtime and NO taking him out while he’s crying (unless you want a screamer for life!!)

Seriously, it’s important that they learn to self sooth and calm themselves- snuggles, play, poop wears them out and helps them learn the rhythm of life in a new setting.

By the way, we are thinking he’s really young because of his features more than his size - that big-eyed round face look really changes from 6-9 weeks. He looks exactly like a 5-6 week old puppy.

We are only trying to support you as you start out. Many of here have been duped by a breeder tricking us, or have not known the best practices when we started out with a first puppy. Just stick with us and it will all work out but you ARE going to have some extra work because of your puppy’s less than excellent beginning.

I am also a proponent of getting puppy to a vet.

We don't know if you have or have not taken him to a vet.

Just my first "go to" response.

He is so cute.

What is his name?

And, don't steal my next red Dobe's name.

Cute name! I can just imagine all the different nicknames that will be morphing into.

Rocco Rocket Man (just give him a couple of weeks)

Roccolini (for when he’s dancing on your dining room table, just give him a couple of months)

Rock On! (prolly already calling him that)

Rocco The Racket (I’m praying you don’t need this one)

Rocco Taco (handy for when he’s raided the pantry)

I’m sure others will come up with more. No self-respecting Doberman has less than 3!

LOL Trish...

Our youngest (McCoy) is never called "McCoy" except for recall or to get his attention. Kind like when one uses a child's full name, including a middle name to make sure they understand that they had better pay attention!

I call him "Baby". Boy, does that turn heads in public. An intact male Dobe pushing 90 lb. called Baby!

For some reason my wife calls him "Hoona Moosh". She never calls him McCoy.

We had a boy years (decades) ago who's registered name was 'Gunnar Tapayter" He was called "Gooney Boy" for a long time. Finally he was just called "Bad". LOL

When Butcher was alive, I called him "Big Pin" (he was quite big) and I called The Sheriff "Little Pin" (he was and still is quite small).

I know very few folks who refer to their pups by their registered or given call name.

I love nick names.

My 2 1/2 yo Grandson, whose name is Gabriel, has very long wispy red/blond hair. I call him "Little Donald". Perhaps you can figure out why!

My first Doberman was registered "Britten David". His whole life he was known as "Biddy".

This is kind of funny, because that is what my 92 yo father is called by all of his kids, grandkids and great grandkids...

When my first niece's father died an early and untimely death, my father took her under his wing. She was about 3. He and she used to refer to each other as their "bitty buddies"

He eventually just became Biddy. It just stuck....
