Ears

We have a 13 week old Doberman her ears were cropped at 12 weeks. We followed instructions for reposting with tapeafter three days of rest. We took them off 2 days the tape and backer rod. We took them off and her ears are bloody and the scab was gone. Donwenwait for the incision to heal or repost again now? Help!!

Should not be posted until all is healed and dry with no scabs! Others here will chime in.

Welcome to DT.

Do NOT post her ears until the stitches are out and the cut edges are completely healed, with no scabs or open areas. Taping over scabs or open areas can cause an infection.

From the day of cropping ears (as several people have already said) should not be posted until the cropped edge is fully healed--no scabs--nothing but nice clean healed tissue.

In general that will be about 7 to 10 before sutures are removed from the upper part of the ear--sometime the sutures at the base are actually left in for 14 days. Then it's anything from one to two more weeks before the ear edge is fully healed. So it's oten close to 3 to 4 weeks before cropped ears should be posted.

I agree with the others. If you smell anything nasty take to the vet there's probably an infection. Hopefully you unposted the ears early enough.
