New to Dobermans
Hi everyone! I am doing research about Dobermans and would love a get a puppy one day for myself here in Charlotte, NC. I am Russian and would probably prefer to have a puppy with European roots. How difficult is it to bring one from overseas? If someone has experience of doing this, please let me know: [email protected]

Hi Olga, welcome to DT!

I am a member of the Doberman Pinscher club of Charlotte. I encourage you to come to a club meeting or event if you are interested in the breed. We are putting on a fast cat (lure coursing) event in two weekends. Feel free to private message me if you want some more info.

Welcome Olga Mur - from Canada.

Why a pup from Europe / for look / or drive ??

IMPO - a new Doberman owner, usually wouldn't have the canine experience / to raise a Dobe with very high prey drive...if that's what you seek.
- we have one such dog (top American show line), but we've owned & trained Dobes since 1977
- so our puppy never ended up in pet rescue // when our Dobe pup went into red zone, we knew what to do

Newbie to breed - better off with Low or Medium prey drive pup // and learn & train together...gain much skill.

Welcome to DT from the left hand Portland (Oregon).

Since you are a newcomer to the breed I'd be inclined to recommend that you find a good local breeder so that you have a reliable contact when you have questions or problems.

The fact is that ALL Dobermans eventually trace back to German dogs--it's where the breed originated.

But it gets hard to find 'good' breeders of dogs of recent 'Euro background' in the states since recently it's become the latest gimmick in Dobes--Euro bred Dobermans.

There are an unseemly number of very poor breeders of Dobes who have a few Euro dogs in their immediate background--and often they aren't dogs that really contribute to the ongoing Doberman breed.

While you can find a few reliable breeders of Euro Dobes (mostly Euro/North American Dobe mixes) they tend to be breeders who are working their dogs in IPO, or other performance venues similar to IPO (Ring etc). Many of these dogs have a lot more drive than the first time Dobe owner will be able to deal with easily.

But good luck in your search. There are some Russian breeders who appear to be producing very nice dogs but importing is not for everyone. For one thing it's expensive by the time you buy the puppy and ship it here and there are some dangers in importing because you don't know the breeder and don't have much recourse if something goes wrong with the puppy or shipping etc. Kansa Dobermans (Doug and Jacque Matson) have experience in importing Dobes and would be worth discussing the possibility of importing a dog. Their e-mail addy is [email protected]. Website is Kansa Quality Dobermans
