5 weeks old ? You got to be kidding - That's so - so young ! YES - I think you need to get you pup to the vet and have him checked out - like tomorrow

He is to small to fight much of a infection -

You should be worrying about a LOT of things. The vet is your first stop...then consult your local rescue for help with VERY young puppies.

Where are you located? In many states this is against the law - puppies must be no younger than 8 weeks to be sold.

Yes, you should be worried, and yes, he needs to go to a vet ASAP. At five weeks, they are just really starting to be weaned. Shame on the breeder for letting him go so young.

So sorry about your pup. Please get him to the vet a.s.a.p. He's way too young to be away from his mother...Irresponsible breeders ( and that's what this is) will give you excuses as to why they sold that baby to you while so young. don't believe a word of it. It's going to be up to you to give him the extra care he requires.. start now!!

Look at it this way ..you have a newborn in your possession. Like most newborns bonding with their mothers is crucial ...moms teaches pup so many things those first 8 weeks. So when its mentioned 5 week old puppy ...not with mama its a concern.
Infection is an issue because ...again like most newborns their immune systems are weak ...so thats why you need to get to the VET.....longer you wait... the worse it can get.......catch it in its earliest stage you and your puppy will be glad you didn’t wait.

I hope you stick around because the issue is not the tail and why it is not healing but the removal from the mother and litter mates at too young of a age.
Dobermans can be temperamental under the best of circumstances , many of the behavioral issues associated with pups from a situation like yours can lead to a mature dog that is very difficult to live with.
Again i hope you stick around .

Hey Jesse....

Any update? I hope you did not get scared off by the comments. Every one was spot on and made in the best interest of your very young puppy.

Please return and let us know how your little boy is doing.

BTW... What is his name? Where do you all live?

Best to you and the pup

It's too late for me to say anything now, but gosh, I hope your pup's alright! Here in California I believe puppies can be rehomed as young as 6 weeks... I see (irresponsible) breeders do it all the time where I live and it's so sad They're far too young to be away from their mother. Update us, we'd all like to know how your pup is doing I'm sure
