Breeder Questions

Hey y'all

My name is Brandon and I'm new to this forum. I am very interested in purchasing my first doberman puppy sometime in August and I am looking for a reputable breeder in Texas. I would like to purchase a purebred puppy and spend no more then $1500. I am posting to ask for advice on which breeders are safe and breed healthy dogs (not trying to waste my time with ByB's). Thanks for any advice you can give!

I am not familiar with any Texas breeders so I can't help out here. You might try any local Doberman clubs in your area or maybe shows or competitions that might be within a drive for you.

The breeders in Texas that have been recommended to me by a person I trust are Sirai, Aura, Horizon, Sunburg, and Treu/Touchstone.

There are several others, as well, including O's, Van Orman, Sunking, and Radiant. There are more, but I'm drawing a blank.

Whichever one you go with, you need to do your homework, with regards to things like health testing. You will probably also need to add about $1000 to what you're willing to pay.

Would you be open to adopting a rescue? There are several good rescues in Texas.

Hi Bock50 from Denver, CO!

Welcome to the price of owning an expensive breed. A well rounded, completely health tested, performance Doberman's puppies will cost you at least $2500 (yes, even the pet home ones). But remember that includes the price of cropping and docking, first set of shots, microchipped, and a reputable breeder will ALWAYS take back their puppy (none of that gimmicky 1 year guarantee stuff that greeders promise). Also their puppies tend to be healthier, much better rounded and exposed to many things (so they're less scared) and they come from healthy proven lines.

There are many things in life that I'm stingy on (cars, furniture, household and garden tools) but NOT on the health and well being of my dogs. There is NO PRICE you can put on that and TRUST ME I KNOW FIRST HAND!!!! The money that you save up front you will be putting out 10 fold in health issues and heartache.

This is not true. I spent $1850 on mine. His dam was a AKC Ch and his sire an AKC GCh.

I do agree that you'll need to raise your budget a bit and add a buffer for vet costs in the first year.

I've only owned my boy for 2 years and I've easily spent $7.5k on the pup and his needs. Cost of the pup, classes, obstruction surgery, premium food, crate, ect. It adds up fast.

My puppy is from a reputable breeder in TX. Honestly, $1500 is at the very low end of the spectrum and I don't know any Texas breeders going for that low that are GOOD breeders. My pup was $2500.

I think you may need to come up a bit in price for what you want.

I truly understand the desire not to spend more then 1500 on a pup. Money is tight for many of us. There may be more jobs out there then there was a few years ago but not good paying jobs. So you want to watch your money and make sure it is spent wisely. Would you skip an oil change on your car to save a few bucks? No you understand that by skipping an oil change it causes more wear on your engine and will end up costing you much more then an oil change. When you buy from a reputable breeder who has done health testing as well as selective breeding to get closer to the breed standard its like the difference in buying a finely built German engineered car versus buying a yugo. yes a Yugo was much cheaper but they didn't last long and fell all apart. lots of horror stories with yugos and lots of horror stories about trying to save a few bucks and buying from a breeder who has a beautiful website and comes across good on the phone. Lots of good breeders in Texas and one that wasn't mentioned Is Nikki McClendon of Merrimac right below Houston. For more info on Nikki you can contact me. I have two of hers. One is a champion and the other is an 11 week pup who will be hitting the show rings in the south east come august.

Well... there are some price differences depending on location Here in the Pacific NW, I would expect to pay about $2500 for a pup from a recognized excellent breeder. Obviously, that includes cropping, docking and dewclaw excision. Also, all the immunizations and parasite treatments one would expect at that age. And of course the costs of raising a pup until the age of 8-11 weeks. And this is a region with many wonderful breeders to choose from.

I paid $2500 for McCoy Thanksgiving 2014 and thought it was a bargain. He was purchased as a pet/companion on a limited registry. Honestly, given the fact that his litter was a result of artificial insemination, with all the incumbent costs, I don't even see how Michelle broke even.

One last thought.... Given what this pup is liable to cost you over its lifetime, the last place I would scrimp is on the front end.

There are many great breeders in Texas, most of which have already been mentioned. I have a Rhapsody doberman - his breeder is in central Texas and I couldn't be happier with her or my doberman.. However, I think that $1500 is a little low for this area.

All of the reputable breeders I researched in Texas (thanks to DT) ranged from $2500-$3000. They all show and even if you just want a pet, the cost to the breeder is the same. Look at this way. You want to purchase a Ferrari but you don't plan to race it. The cost to the manufacturer is still the same.

Good luck!

This is where my pup is from. There are two bitches looking for homes. So price is going to be well above $1500 but so absolutely worth it.

OP I have a rescue as well. You may want to check out local humane societies. People surrender for some really dumb reasons.
