Hello all, Dobe saved from Humane Society

HI,

Got my boy about 5 months ago, he was adopted from my local Humane Society. His previous family was moving and couldn't keep him, or so the story went. Either way, he was 8mos old when I got him. He just turned one last month on the 9th. He was scrawny when we got him , could see his ribs. He's had his ears and tail cropped , although his ears don't stand up and his tail seems a bit long.

When I first brought him home at 8mos old he was 47lbs and 23.5" tall to the top of his shoulders & 25" from front of shoulder to his rump. Just measured him today and he is 59lbs and 25" to top of shoulders & 27" from front of shoulder to his rump.

So he has certainly grown and filled out (looks much better) , but is still "small" for his age and gender. I suppose that a lot of that has to do with genetics and how well he was fed as a pup.

I've been feeding him Hills Science Diet "Perfect Weight" after trying a couple different foods. I settled on this because he was having very soft/mushy stool with standard 4-5% fiber dog foods. The "Perfect Weight" has him pooping picture perfect stools. It is 11% fiber.

I've tried looking for other dog foods with higher fiber than the standard 4-5%, but there aren't many to choose from.

If anyone has any insight or comments, please feel free. I haven't had a dog since my parents used to raise Irish Wolfhounds, and that was over 20 years ago.

Welcome to DT. A lot of things can cause soft stool so I wouldn't just concentrate on finding a food with a certain amount of fiber in it. Science diet is not the best food but if he's doing well on it right now then that is good. If it were me I would still want to change to something else. Even purina pro plan is much better.

The key to transitioning between foods is to do it gradually and you need go through a whole bag before you really assess how he's doing on it. As to his small size, I would say it is not particularly normal for a male doberman, but not unheard of if he is from a back yard breeder. My first doberman was 65# male at 5yrs. Have you ever had a liver panel done? Can you share some photos of him?

Welcome to DT and thanks for rescuing. He may be a bit on the smaller side due to genetics and/or malnourishment when he was younger, but he's going to keep filling out for a while yet.

Here is a good place to start comparing different foods. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor You'll find that most people here don't care for Science Diet. When you say he's had loose stools, I'm assuming that he's been checked for intestinal parasites? Also, overfeeding could have caused his loose stools on the other foods.

Thanks for the replies.

He's had tests done for intestinal parasites and heartworm, both negative.

As far as food goes, I started him out on Diamond Naturals , as that is what the Humane Society had been feeding him. Figured it was one less food transition, and from what I read it seemed to be decent food. His poop was never good.

I brought him with to a friends house one evening and forgot to bring his food. I stopped at a local Jewel grocery store and bought a 6Lb bag of Rachel Ray Nutrish , "Just 6" dog food just so he had something to eat that evening. He had great poops immediately after.

After his Diamond Naturals was gone, I bought a bag of Natures Recipe (forget which flavour) and his poop was the same as the Diamond Naturals.

After the bag of Natures Recipe , I bought some more of the Rachel Ray Just 6 and his poop was good again. Could only find 6Lb bags though. After doing some online research, I found several complaints about the lack of Quality Control of the Rachel Ray dog food products, so I started searching for a new food.

I wondered why the Just 6 food made such a difference. After thinking about it, the only real difference I could find in the nutritional values between the foods I had tried was the fiber content. The Diamond and the Natures Recipe were both 4-5% , and the Just 6 was 7%.

I searched for dog food that was higher in fiber than the typical 4-5% and couldn't find many. Settled on the Science Diet only because they were a respectable brand that I had remembered from years before and in recent online research hadn't read anything bad about them.

Liver panel? Not sure what that is, but he has been tested for Von Willebrands , and he is in the carrier range.

I'll put some photos of him up soon. Only pics I currently have are from when I very first got him.

Sorry for the novel, just thought it would help you understand my thinking with regard to his food.

A liver panel is a blood test, which checks several different things to verify that the liver is doing its job properly.

As for vWD, when you say that "he is in the carrier range", does that mean that you had the vet run the test at the office? If so, that test is considered unreliable in determining actual vWD status. You really should have a DNA test run to verify his status. You can get the test through either VetGen https://www.vetgen.com/ or Vetnostics VetNostic Laboratories® - Veterinary Genetic Testing - VetNostic Laboratories ? Genetic testing for Dogs ? Dog DNA tests

Welcome! I adopted my girl from the Humane Society at 7 1/2 months.

I would look for a higher quality food. I feed my girl Orijen, which is really high in protein. Foods really depend on the dog though and what they do well one. Since he's been with you for a little bit now and still having loose stool, I would def. switch him to something else. Acana, Orijen, Taste of the Wild, and even pro plan would be better kibbles IMO.

Do you have a pic?

Jasmine had loose stool on everything but Orijen. I'd be curious to see a pic to see if he's underweight, or in just an awkward growth phase.

Not trying to be arguementative , but what makes brand X better than Hills Science Diet? Not trying to champion their food or anything, just curious as to why people think it's not good dog food, and what you think makes one food better than another?

To be clear , his poop is picture perfect for a few months now that he has been on the Science Diet "perfect weight" high fiber food. I can provide photographic proof if you wish.

As far as the VWD goes, the Humane Society sent a sample (blood?) to IDEXX Laboratories for testing. His result was a 36%.
According to the paperwork I have the % ranges are :
70-180%=Normal
50-69%=Borderline Range
0-49%=Carrier Range

From what I understand about VWD, it is similar to human anemia. If the animal gets cut or undergoes surgery, it is possible for them to have excessive blood loss due to a failure to blood clot. He has had some nicks and scrapes since I've had him , but he didn't bleed much at all, about what one would expect. No excessive bleeding , in fact his cuts seemed to close up pretty quickly. Talking to the vet that neutered him, she said there were no complications from the VWD during/after his surgery.

Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah, I posted some pics in the gallery, but none of them are very recent. The first 4 are from when I first got him, the 5th is after about a month of him living with me. I'll try to get some pics today.

Just looked up some stuff using the Dog Food Adviser site that you recommended Rosemary. Also did a search for the Orijen Dog food. Can't afford to feed him that. $50 for 15Lb bag was what I saw from online retailers. My budget is more along the lines of $50 for a 30lb bag (give or take).

From what I gather on the DFA site, the main issue with the SD Perfect Weight is it's low Fat content and middle of the road Protein. Some might find some concern with it's minerals not stated as being chelated.

Would it be a good alternative to supplement this food with some canned food ? Or is the price going to kill me?

Thanks for your help.

Living in England I know absolutely nothing about the foods you've mentioned here but IMO if your boy is thriving & his poop is good on the food you're currently feeding him then stick with it.

The kibble I feed my rescue boy is not the best quality but it is the only one I found that he tolerates & produces good poops. The better quality kibble just went straight through him. He is healthy, happy & thriving & loves the food I feed him & to me that is what's most important.

BTW, your boy is gorgeous. Thank you for opening your heart & home to him.

He's SO CUTE!!! I love that close up of his face!!!

My first Dobie was a rescue and she's what turned me on to Dobermans. She dies a year ago and now I am blessed with Xena- 16months of PURE PUPPY HELL! LOL!

Wouldn't trade her for the world!

BTW-- what does the Vet say about his weight? He does seem a little small, but if he's otherwise healthy.....

Hasn't been to the vet lately, but last time around they were happy with his weight as compared to his size.

Are his ears permanently flopped over now? Is he too old to post them? He just turned one last month on the 9th.

Been scouring the interwebs for the last few hours looking up dog foods. Need to get of this computer before I go blind.

Thanks for your help. I'll check back later, maybe with some more pics.

If you have a Tractor Supply Co. store in your area, try their 4Health brand. Its definitely in your price range and is a pretty good food for the price. I prefer the grain-free line, myself.

The HS had an ELISA test done. That's the unreliable one, since the amount of vW factor can fluctuate day to day. The test done by the labs I linked are DNA tests, and will give you a definitive answer of clear, carrier, or affected. A clear or carrier dog won't have any risk of bleeding issues related to vWD. An affected dog might not have any issues either, but you will be aware of the possibility.
