Hello :)

Hey everybody- I have a question I want to get a Doberman, and as far as my research goes, I meet all the requirements to raise a happy Dobe But I'm not quite sure as to how they handle the heat..? I live in Houston, Texas so obviously it's kind of warm here. I know they're intolerable to cold weather, but I never see anything about heat. If anybody could help me out with this, I would appreciate it very much Thanks! xx

Hi & welcome from England

Dobes generally don't tolerate extremes in weather, be it hot or cold & they're not too keen on rain either. My boy hates the heat & starts to wilt when it gets to the mid 70's F so when it's hot here we walk him first thing in the morning or in the evening when it's cooler.

There are quite a few members here from Texas. Hopefully some of them will tell you how their dobes cope with the heat.

Out of curiousity, just how hot does it get in Texas in the summer?

On a good day, 85 degrees F. We shed our sweaters in February!

I live in Florida and it is very hot and humid about half the year. All of us humans and Dobermans live inside with the AC on full time. The AC starts up around April and continues until end of October. When walking it is done very early in the day before 8AM or after 8PM. Dobermans are not outside dogs, meaning they are not to be left outside alone. It is not the breed to be away from their human. All of the girls love the inside because I am with them and of course the AC is on.

I'm in Houston and have 3 dobes. They handle it just fine provided they aren't outside all day. Meaning it is way too hot to even think about a Dobe being an outside pet in Houston. So long as they're house dogs and you monitor the outside play they should be fine.

Welcome to DT.
