Hello from Huntersville (Charlotte), NC

Hello!

I'm Scott from Huntersville, NC. My family rescued a mixed breed dog last year. I was the hold out. I always thought of myself as preferring long haired breeds like Golden Retrievers or Shepherds but, the wife and kids were persistent!

Her mother was a beautiful brindled sable something or other. We have no idea who the father was but, half the puppies were sable and the other half black and tan and all of them had various amounts of white. We adopted one of the black and tan puppies and kept her name - Skittles.

We're looking for a second puppy but, this time around, I want to be a little more selective. We're looking for a healthy, medium sized Dobie puppy with natural ears and tail. I've spent enough time on the forum to learn that's a difficult request for most breeders! I'm hoping to meet a few in the Carolina's that might consider it though.

Here's a picture of Skittles running up to give the camera a big wet kiss...

Welcome!

I don't think you will find a breeder in the States that will leave both ears and tail natural. I think I've *maybe* heard of one working breeder doing that. If that's really important to you it's possible you will have to look at importing a dog, or, you might consider looking at rescue. Sometimes pups come into rescue all natural.

Welcome to DT! You will find it hard or basically impossible to find a well bred doberman here that's not cropped and docked. This is a c/d breed and almost all reputable breeders seek to preserve that. Many will not leave them uncropped for "pet" homes because if the puppy is ever returned it is very hard to place it in another home if its ears are not cropped. Also, many breeders do the final show/pet grading after the entire litter has been cropped and if any of the gradings have changed from before it could end up meaning the best puppy could not be shown, and breeders don't want to risk that.

Have you considered rescuing a doberman instead? This area is flooded with purebred dobermans needing homes just like your skittles, most of which have natural ears and some tails too. If you really are set on a puppy and decide you can compromise on the ears and tail and will purchase from a reputable breeder you might contact "dobegirl07" via PM about any local planned breedings or litters.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yep, I agree it's a problem for me. Breeder's duty is to the standard and I'm looking for the one going against the grain

I'm hoping to avoid the health problems that might come from a BYB and I really want to meet the dogs parents - both dog and human - to get to know their temperament before we adopt.

Ultimately, I'm keeping all options open, considering both pure breeds and mixed, rescues or from top local breeders. I've just gotta be patient until the right one comes along.
