Smile Welcome!!!

Hey, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum from WI State. Sorry to hear about your great dane. I actually own a great dane and love her a lot. They are wonderful family dogs. I am new to this forum too and me and my husband are looking to add another Dobie to our family. We had one in our lives but due to severe hip dysplasia had to put her down. She was only five years old too young in my books to go but we tried surgery after surgery and medicine after medicine and she got to the point where her quality of life was little to none. My husband had to carry her ourside to releave herself because she couldn't get up. We miss her dearly. Anyway congrats on you new addition. Good luck with training!!! I am sure with a little tlc and some training she will come around. Again good luck and enjoy your dobie they are so full of life and great dogs.

Welcome to DT! You'll find lots of great information here. I am also going through the trials of having a doberteen. We can commiserate together, but I am told that all the work is worth it in the end. I wait in excited anticipation.

welcome from Ontario, Canada, and congrats on your new addition, you will find that once you have a dobe, you will always want a dobe! as for her jumping, dobes were intended to jump on an adversary, knock them to the ground and hold them there, so it's natural for them to jump, you have to be patient and teach her "off", if she tends to jump on people when she meets them you might want to have her on a leash for introductions so you can control the behaviour.
good luck, I'm sure she will enrich your life! and help fill the gap left by your dane.

I was shocked reading about your girl, hip dyplasia is not common in dobes. So sad, makes me wonder how it happened to her.

Welcome from North Carolina and congratulations on adopting your girl. Sorry to hear about your Great Dane - they are such noble animals. I would immediately enroll in an obedience class with her. That is a SUPER way to bond with your Doberman because they crave to learn new things and please you. Also, do you have a good way to let her really blow off her energy several times a day? If she is not hooked on chasing tennis balls or frisbees, start today! LOL! That is a great way to do some intense exercise.

Also, you can do a Google search on the training program called "Nothing In Life Is Free" or NILIF. It will help your girl learn to keep 4 paws on the floor very quickly. What methods did you use to train your Great Dane?

Hey thank I will have to look that website up, and as for my dane i got really lucky because i just spoiled her rotten and she was the best listener ever!! i could have her with no leash around kids, cats other dogs and she would stay right by my side. As for the exercise, sadly i havent been able to take her out much because she had kennel cough when i got her, but i intend to take her to the dog park ASAP!! Ill be going to petsmart this weekend to stock up on some cool toys for her as well!:butfly

HI and welcome from the UK !!

my missy was nearly 2 when we got her. she was not trained, that was in january, she can now walk off lead with my and is well trained appart from stay.. that word seems to freak her out ( previous life ) so we are working on another word now !!

i would say you will not know the true her for about 8 weeks, all i have read is that girls take a while to show there true self,

missy did not roll over for a belly rub for about 8 weeks , then finally did.. it was the time i knew she was truly relaxed and finally MY dog !!

give it time and she will be great !!
