Talking Greetings from Meagen and the "Dang Gang"

Hello everyone!

My name is Meagen Hoy (not afraid if my last name is known hehe) and I am 20 yrs old. I grew up showing Harlequin Great Danes and throughout this entire time have been learning all sorts of neat things not just about different breeds, but mainly the Doberman. I have spent 13 years (no joke) dedicated to researching this breed as I want to start being owned by them and showing them.

My mother and I have been owned by Great Danes for 17 years. During this time we have done more showing than breeding, only having six litters total. We genetically health test any dog that *may* be considered for breeding, but they still must pass other things such as temperament (will not breed a dog with a bad temperament), confirmation, overall quality, pedigree research, and much more. I feel that growing up in the "dog world" has given me a head start should I want to create a breeding program to create superior quality Dobermans, as close to the standard as possible in all aspects.

I recently graduated from college, and earned a diploma (not a degree) in veterinary assistance. I feel this not only benefits me in my career in veterinary medicine, but also as an owner/exhibitor/potential breeder. I may just continue my education to become a registered veterinary technician.

I look forward to participating in this group!

welcome megan. please let us know how many dogs you have. there are a few folks here with four dobes. your danes are gorgeous! I also admire the thought, preparation and caring you are putting into starting a breeding program. I wish more folks would do the same.

I'm Carrie and currently owned by a 5 year old sweetie pie named apollo. we are planning to add more in a few months. haven't decided if it will be another rescue or a pup.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes! I live in Spokane, WA and right now I have two show danes, and two spayed danes. I do still show/own them (and various other breeds), and occasionaly we may have a litter only if all health tests and everything else checks out though. Right now our breeding program is to improve the confirmation of the lines that we got. Of course health, temperament, and life span are always included. I don't like "baby's" flat chest lol.

Yup, I am on myspace under lykanthropy. That link in the Doberman forum is how I found this group!

I too wish people would take time before breeding dogs. There is so much research and learning that needs to be done first, and it is very important! One "rule" I go by for animals is to wait a week, research what pet it is or what I want to do, and think about it. If by the end of that week it isn't very appealing, than I didn't rush into something, or bring a pet home, or start something that I really didn't want.

Personally, I want to show Dobermans more than I want to breed. That is why I am going to spend three to four years being owned by Dobes and doing showing (not just confimation, other events too!). Then I can go from there as far as setting up a breeding program. I am against backyard breeders and puppymills, and I do try to give them information such as health testing and why it should be done.

I've been in love w/ Dobermans since I was seven, and am a very big dober nut lol.

Hi Meagen,
You sound like a very knowledgeable person, glad to have you on this board! Welcome.
Sounds like you and your mother have a good breeding program for Danes.
It is also important to health test breeding dogs in the Doberman breed as well, as well as considering other aspects you listed such as temperament, overall pedigree, conformation, etc.

I only wish more breeders would do the same as you when it comes to breeding and more individuals do their research to find a quality health tested dog from a reputable breeder when they are searching for a Dobe.
It is extremely refreshing that you understand the difference between a byb and a reputable breeder and the reasons it is important to do your research.

Michelle’s Dobes are very nice quality dogs, you will not be disappointed. I love the look and temperament of her lines. I also like that not only are her dogs in the conformation ring, they are also in performance venues. She is truly a wonderful and caring breeder and you are lucky to have her as a mentor.
