Be careful what you wish for. I'd much rather pay for a guaranteed nice crop than take a gamble on someone without the same reputation. Just my two cents. Not meaning to be derrogatory.

If it were my pup and I got a recommendation for the "premier" cropping vet, I would be:

1.) checking out his credentials and if I was satisfied...

2.) jetting myself and my pup to his office ASAP regardless of the price or the distance.

just sayin......

I did get a crop done in Michigan - unfortunately I discovered DT after I brought my guy home, or I would have done about a bajillion things differently. My breeder did not handle my crop - the vet I used was not medically bad (they were clean, sterile, helpful, nice, etc), but the crop itself did not turn out as nicely as I had hoped. I would gladly go back in time, drive to Paw Paw (~3.5 hours) and pay more for the vet recommended above...

I would call and find out what his current fee is.... in any case whatever it is, he is well worth it. If you are on the East side of the State (Detroit area), I know a number of breeders that use Dr. Staples in London, Ontario, Canada.

I will tell you that with ear cropping you definitely get what you pay for.

Of course you get what you pay for, that goes without saying. If I was in it to show my dog you bet your a$$ I'd want the best. Whatever, I'm not here to argue with people. Just looking for vet that can do a medium crop for my boy at a reasonable price.

Anyway, found a place less than 10 minutes from me in Lansing. Also, one in Flint, one in Ann Arbor, and of course Detroit. I was hoping to find a local vet for obvious reasons. I'll be calling around tomorrow. Most of the breeders I talked to had it done for $300, which sounds fair to me.

Many times breeders get a litter discount for ear cropping, that needs to be kept in mind when asking them about price.

I dunno. I don't know that I actually agree with the "you get what you pay for" phrase being applied to ear cropping. I've seen a lot of people pay good money (many times comparable to what a cropping artist would charge) for absolutely DISGUSTING ear crops-crops you couldn't PAY ME enough to put on my dog.

Even if the dog isn't a show dog, I think most people want a crop that's going to enhance their dog's appearance, not make them look silly and/or pathetic.

For that reason, price or location would be the last things I'd use in my decision making process, and I'd sure want to see samples of the work each vet has done before choosing one.

just though I would put this out there, from the UKC forum regarding Dr. Main listed above:

Dr. Main does an EXCELLENT crop on Boxers. It's a 14 hour drive for me, and worth every second of it.

I can personally vouch for Dr. Main. He is the best. Even though I have Whippets, I've also had Great Danes for over twenty years. All my Great Dane friends go to him and the ears turn out excellent

I decided on doctor Main, scheduled and put down a deposit. My dober is getting his crop two days after he turns eight weeks.

Thank You

Last time I checked with Dr Main about 1 yr or so ago he was btwn $200 - $250. Plus the pups get cropped and go home the same day, you could just hang in town while the puppy is cropped and then take home to your vet for follow up care.

If you are the East side try emailing Gormae or Lyndobe to see who they use in that area.

My 3 yr old was done by Dr. Main and she has a very nice show crop and ears stand well.

I can speak for Lynne (Lyndobe). She uses Dr. Main. She did have a vet in the Detroit area up until a couple of years ago, that was doing it, but he was terribly inconsistent (case in point the difference between Turner's ears and Wheeler's ears -- Turner has a fantastic crop, but Wheeler's leaves a lot to be desired AND he was re-cropped!). In any case, Lynne grew tired of the inconsistency and having to have some re-cropped, and now goes to Dr. Main exclusively. It is a 3 hour drive for her, but well worth it.

This thread is from January.

If wolfgirl is getting her dog cropped it woulda happened months ago.
