Puppy Recommendations (Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio)

My wife and I are currently looking to add a Doberman puppy to our family. We have our hearts set on a red female/male. We are active in the community and we both love to be outdoors and exercise regularly. I have been doing quite a bit of research and have been in contact with several breeders in Indiana/Ohio/Iowa. We are currently in Indiana (Indianapolis). I am simply looking for some advice on breeders that have a good track record for putting out good quality puppies that are healthy with a good temperament. Currently I have been in contact with the following:

Von Rein Doberman of Ohio
-States that they do extensive testing on their pups (echo, hips, elbows, bunch of others)

Silverhawk Doberman of Greencastle, IN
- State that they have a 5 year health guarantee that covers all genetic issues that may go wrong as long as you give your puppy their vitamins.

MBM Doberman of Iowa

I have contacted Windsong Doberman of South Bend but I have yet to hear back from them

I would love to hear some insight on any of these breeders or any others that people may recommend. All of these have been between 1800-2000, which is at the top of my budget for a puppy. Look forward to hearing from everyone. Thank you!!

Welcome to DT. To search for past discussions on a particular breeder you might try a google search like this "site: www.dobermantalk.com + breeder name" and it will pull up a lot of results. DT use to be a lot more active so older threads sometimes have a lot more feedback than new ones. The market price for a well bred pup seems to now be in the $2-3000 range so you may have to pump up your puppy piggy bank just a little bit more.

Do you have doberman experience? When contacting breeders it's good to tell them about any dog/doberman experience as well as your expectations from your future pup, activities and training you will do, your housing/fencing situation, work schedule, etc.

When we started to look for a new pup a few years ago I called Silverhawk - They had some on the way - if I remember right - And I started asking questions about any testing and other things - I just got the feeling that they were beating around the bush with me for some reason - I had heard they have good dogs .

Here's one you might what to check out Jagerdobes ? Doberman Breeder with Champion Dobermans in Williamsburg Click on puppies - it says 3 boys 5 girls - This is where we got Kadin from and picked him up at Cindy's house East of Louisville KY - They have since moved - but not far from there . I will say that you have to meet certain standards - And chances of getting just a companion dog are not high - If you have never had a Dob - Don't waste your time with this one = Also we were VERY lucky to have got Mr.Business as his full brother and both sisters work in the ring and you will have to fill out a pretty good resume .

As Green said - look at 2,500 to 3 -

Good luck !

btw - we live about 30 miles east of Indy

Ask any breeder for copies of health tests on the sire and dam - there should be recent tests on heart (ultrasound and 24 hour holter), thyroid, and bloodwork. They should have hips (and possibly elbows) registered with OFA (orthopedic foundation for animals). They should have a DNA test to determine their VWD status, and a CERF test for eyes.... especially if they are european.

It is ideal if both parents are titled in either AKC conformation, or working venues i.e.: IPO 1,2,3

I don't see any titles or health tests listed for MBM Dobermans or Von Rein on their Facebook pages - so ask. People who are breeding just to produce puppies are not who you want to support. I searched OFA for Von Rein and MBM, and did not find any results.... but it could be under a different name.

Silverhawk looks more promising, however, I don't personally know them. Their last litter was from lovely champion dogs - Love Cullen! I would still ask for copies of test results

Windsong is a familiar name - but still do your research.

I would avoid any breeder (no matter how good their health guarantee sounds) who is pushing those vitamins you must give and must be able to prove you give. This is a red flag in my opinion.

I know nothing about MBM and I think you should be able to find older threads that have some information about Von Rein--my pretty foggy recollection is that I was not impressed with them and all breeders should really be testing their breeding stock for the things they told you they test for and more besides.

Did you e-mail or call Windsong--might try again--they are active in the show ring and sometimes that means that they come home from weekend shows or circuits and have so many e-mail queries it's easy for one to get lost.

You also might want to check the DPCA website for breeders they list--most of them that qualify to be listed there are better than average. And you might want to spread your search a bit--Illinois has several good breeders listed there and Michigan does also.

Good luck in your search.

Some older threads about MBM.

https://www.dobermantalk.com/breedin...pinschers.html

Also, according to their FB page, they have at least two litters (24 pups) on the ground right now, and possibly another two on the way (the bitches were "exposed" to the male, but she doesn't know if they were actually bred). Oh, their new stud dog tips the scales at 118 pounds.

ETA: I missed the date of the original post, and thought it was a current thread.

I would suggest checking the DPCA Breeder's Referral. There are many breeders in the areas you mention. Do be sure to ask about health testing and be sure to see documentation of such. Many of the breeders do only very minimal health testing; vWD, Hips, Thyroid. Good luck with your search. You will find prices range from $2000-$3500.
